I went on Tripadvisor to get more answers as well. There's a "local expert" who was very helpful. I'm hoping signage is in English as well as Mandarin for transit.

All signs in HK are in Cantonese and English and most people speak English, although the local language is Cantonese. Just day ‘n’goy’ to everyone and they will appreciate it, it means thank you

This was one of the stops on our included tour when we were there in 2019...or am I thinking of a different market?

Clay--Brian and I met you on the Viking World cruise 2023-2024.  We are at the Viking Japan cruise in 2026 or 2027 (2026 almost sold out now).  Did you enjoy it?  Were the excursions too strenuous (optional ones--not included)?  Thanks for your input.

Hope you’re recovered from the shock of not having twice daily room cleaning (we aren’t!). Our asian cruise with Viking was one they aren’t doing anymore (I don’t believe). We sailed from Bejing (Tianjin), had a couple of stops in China, Okinawa and another stop in southern Japan and then Shanghai before ending in Hong Kong.  So not sure our experience will give you much insight.  Additionally, as this was our first trip to the region, we did most (all?) included excursions.  Drop me a line at BigNCBear at aol dot com and let me know which ports your cruise is going to stop and we can see if there is any overlap.

We did the day trip to Macau. I've been to HK before, but never to Macau, so this was interesting.

However - the Viking excursion wasn't that great - they spent too little time in the 'old town' for our liking, and too much time at a casino and a fancy revolving restaurant (we'd have preferred street food in old-town!).  They also took us by ferry rather than by road, and - possibly to allow for delays - booked everyone on the 10am ferry even though we were at the ferry terminal by 8:30am. So over an hour waiting in the not-so-attractive ferry terminal. I would consider a self-guided tour, just get the ferry and get yourself to the old town area.
