Parking at Newark Airport for cruise leaving from NYC

Recommended Posts

Just booked a Princess cruise from NYC RT.  We would like to drive to EWR airport, park in long term parking, schedule a transfer to the port and repeat the process at the end.  I do not want to drive in NYC.  Is this a feasible idea>

Sure. You could park in either the daily or economy lots. From the economy lots you could take the shuttle to a terminal and have an Uber pick you up there or you could have an Uber/Lyft pick you up at P4 if you use the daily lots there. Same process for the reverse.

Keep in mind that Princess doesn't depart from Manhattan-- it leaves from Red Hook Brooklyn. They do have a dedicated lot at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal and at $45 a day (vs $35-60 per day at EWR plus the cost of transfers) will be vastly more cost effective and convenient than parking at EWR.

Red Hook is not what I would call "part of the city" from a driving standpoint-- its not nearly as busy as Midtown Manhattan. Coming up from Maryland, EWR will be out of the way if your destination is Brooklyn. You would cross the Verrazano Bridge and then take 278 right into the cruise terminal-- there is virtually zero city driving to park at the cruise terminal.

Is it “feasible”? Yes. But what a lot of additional hassle and schlepping (and expense) to which you’ll subject yourselves on both ends of your trip, as @princeton123211 explains above.  Yes, you would have traffic crossing Staten Island and on 278 in Brooklyn if you drove to the cruise terminal, but your car would be there and not at EWR. You should at least give it some thought, and perhaps you may decide it depends on the day of the week.

I don’t know where in Maryland you are, but is taking Amtrak to NY out of the question?

I like this idea - no point in ANY urban driving if you don’t like it - and the Amtrak fare and convenience would likely trump the cost and hassle of the Newark parking concept.

I'm not a fan of driving in NYC either, including Brooklyn. But, it seems to me parking at EWR and then finding a way to the port is way more headache than it's worth versus driving to the port and parking there.

With that said, from Maryland, I agree with the suggestion to just take Amtrak and then Uber to the port.

Thanks For your thoughts everyone. What was I thinking?? Looking now at maybe flying into LGA and taking transfer from the ship.  Also looking at Amtrak from BWI to Penn Station.  Any thoughts of Uber costs from Penn Station to Brooklyn Cruise terminal?  Assume that would be the best way.

Uber from Penn to BCT starts around $45-50 each way.

Frankly with flight costs to LGA, ground transportation, and time honestly from Maryland I would drive up and park at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. It will be a lot less hassle than flying such an incredibly short distance and the driving and parking costs should be less.
