Mini review Dawn 3/05

Recommended Posts

We had a nice start to the cruise, the weather was cool but delightful. The night before we left we got an email from Alex Forbes, the consierge, welcoming us to the Dawn and requesting that we call him upon arrival at the pier so that he could meet us.

We booked a BB handicapped but upsaled for $1000. to an AB Penthouse thru the upsale desk. It was our 5th sail on NCL, third on the Dawn.

We arrived at the pier by car at 11:00 am. The ship was still unloading and the upper deck was getting crowded and hot. Called Alex and he suggested that we meet with him at the bottom of the stairs on the left of the building. He gathered all the penthouse folks and lead us thru the usual process of paperwork and on board the ship. All in all, about 40 minutes. We stopped in our cabin 11520 and dropped off the carry ons and headed for the Venitian for a nice lunch. It was great to relax after all the rush of getting ready and getting there. We made reservations for dinner, after lunch, at Cagneys. First night 1/2 off speciality prices. Set sail and enjoyed the chores of unpacking and setting up the room, meeting the room stewarts and Anshuman, the butler.

One moment for Anshuman...Awesome. Always smiling, willing to meet your every need and even thought of needs we did not recognize. Mention you love chocolate chip cookies....got a tray of them, etc. He was fairly new to the Dawn, but was on top of everything. Looked for Putu, but he was the floater for this voyage and will be available for the next butler opening. Anshuman brought him by to introduce him, when we asked where he was.

The ab penthouse was great. The balcony was spacious and the bath is something to remember. Amy enjoyed having her own room and bath and Tv. We appreciated the separate bedroom with the closing curtain when I got sick with a norwalk like virus. I was able to isolate myself from the rest of them for 36 hrs. (never left the master bedroom and bath, kept the doors closed and ate alone. DH brought me food from blue lagoon and buffet. Not that I could eat much) Not sure I did the right thing not reporting to Medical Department, but did not want to quarentine the entire cabin for 72 hours.

Missed Cozumel and Grand Caymen and still managed to have a blast.

Jamaica: the stop was short and DD in wheelchair limited activity so we took a cab to Margarittaville in Ocho Rios. Had a blast at their pool and beach. Did some shopping and came back to the ship.

Other stops for us were Belize, shopping and Roatan, the highlight of our trip.

We booked Roatan Cab Company for the day and for $20 each an english speaking guide stayed with us all day and took us on a full tour of the island and shopping, and to the beach at the Mayan Princess. (Entry fee for pool, chair and beach $10.each) We were delighted with Janet Jackson who stayed available all day.

Restaurants: Cagneys: Very good as usual, wouldn't miss it.

Venitian, Aqua, Impressions: Limited menus but portions seem to have improved in size. Miss the soup selections and appitizers selections from the past. Salsa was a nice change, had not been there before. La Trattoria was not to our liking and complained to Denis, F&B Manager. He went up there for dinner with Noel, Restaurants Manager and had dinner the same night and came back to let us know how much hell they raised with the kitchen. We were comped to LeBistro another night by Denis.

Alex does a fantastic job and must never sleep or slow down. He was always available and able to do whatever you wanted.

CC Meeting on Monday was wonderful and well attended. Senior staff came and met up with all of us and we got 15 min. free internet time.

Went to Captains Latitude Party and Captains reception for suite people. Both were nicely handled and well attended.

Had a great time at the casino, nightly. Shannon one of the managers went out of her way to stop at my machine everynight for a chat. Bought a drink several nights. It helped compensate for the losses. It became a good place to meet up with other CC members who became friends. Andrew and Janet helped me close the casino on the last night. My favorite Jackpot party was not paying off.

We arrived in NY about 9:00 and Someone from the consierge came to our cabin at 10:30 to escort us off the ship. Congested, but not any different than any other cruise.

We had a great vacation, good food, best weather, fairly good seas, what more could I ask...Good company and there was plenty of that. Met the nicest CC members and ran into them all hours of the day and night...always a pleasure. Looking forward to doing it again.

Eileen - thanks so much for your great report!

I'm glad you got to meet Putu - he is a delightful gentleman, and we enjoyed getting to know him during our ten days. Anshuman was brought on halfway through our voyage, and was taking care of the two GV's at that time. They must be shifting everyone around as they prepare for Putu's upcoming vacation. ;)

So I see Alex is still the energizer bunny taking care of everything all at once! :)

What a shame that you missed some fun while you were ill. Thank heavens you had that fabulous AB to luxuriate in while you recovered! :D

Looking forward to anything else you think of as your brain returns to reality!

Pepper, I thought of you when I played the Texas Tea machine and listened to the music and laughed. And lost. As far as my brain returning to reality...no way! I wish to stay between reality and sea. Not a bad place to be. We signed up for the platinum rewards program so we will be sailing again in the near future. Don't remember all the details of the program, but my DH was looking into it and decided to give it a try. By the way, Alex is a floating Consierge. He will be there two months and then on to another ship for two months and boy, can he blush!!! I think it was you that commented on that or was it Shoreguy?

Enjoyed the company of Denis, F & B Manager, He joined us a few times at dinner. Great sense of humor and very effective. Stopped by at Impressions to see if we noticed the food portions were larger than when we first boarded.

And we did. Seems to be trying to improve the food presentation.

Since our last cruise, the staff has done a complete change with the exception of Noel the Restaurants Manager. It amazed us that the service, efficency and teamwork continues to be the best of quality.

Eileen, it was I who mentioned about Alex's blushing, and we really took every opportunity to make it happen! :p It was hilarious to see such a composed young man turn pink and get "shy."

The F&B Director on our cruise was Tony, but he was going on vacation at the end of our sailing. Denis was onboard getting the lay of the land while we were enjoying ourselves.

The teamwork on that ship is simply astounding! We noticed it numerous times, and commented about it on our cards as well. ;)

Thanks for the reminder of the "Texas Tea" machine - I lost on it too, but had fun laughing at it! :D

Welcome home, and be sure to take your time and savor every single memory of your wonderful voyage.

Thanks for the great review. We are sailing on the Dawn on 4/6 in an AB penthouse. Do you think we will get Anshuman or is there more than one butler for the AB's? We will be across the hall in 11020.

thanks

thanks

They normally have one butler for all the ABs. Outlook very good Anshuman will be your butler unless they switch assignments.

EileenN - welcome home and thank you for posting the review. At least this time you left the ship in as good a shape as you found it :D :D

Glad you enjoy my penthouse. :D What a great location.

I can't believe it will almost a year before I get on the Dawn again. I can't believe she will be gone from NYC in 20 months.

Anshuman just came on board recently and is the only butler for the AB penthouse. He is a real pleasure.

Shoreguy: Thank you for the use of your penthouse. A gracious host every time!!! But where was the booze hidden. Looked high and low. Don't you love the distance from the Diamond door to the slots. Direct access. Great location.

Eileen, having so much fun slotting with you on that last night only made us wish we had spent more fun times together throughout the cruise!(too bad my efforts to divert the hair blowing slot machine gawkers to the snack table were in vain) ;) Incidentally, do you think there is any truth to the control of the payouts on the casino slots. On the last night we couldn't lose 20 dollars if we tried. I heard from many people somewhere around Cozumel that there were absolutely no payouts on slots, that the machines would eat up $20 in 5 minutes, whereas on the last day people couldn't lose...

We really appreciated the champagne and the penthouse tour. It was a treat for us perpetual inside cabiners to see what luxury cruise living is like. Maybe we'll cross paths on the Gem! Give our best to Butch and Amy.

Andrew and Janet, who unbelievably have not succumbed to cruise depression..yet
