our Spirit cruise on April 2nd

Recommended Posts

My husband and I sailed on April 2nd on the Spirit to celebrate are 29th wedding anniversary. We had a inside cabin and upgraded to a balcony a few weeks before the cruise. cabin 10070. This was our 5th time on NCL. Was on thd Dawn 4 times. We have been on Homeric, RCL, Carnival, Regal, Chandris and Premier. My husgand has done about 18 cruises. I stopped counting for myself.

We arrived and parked at the pier. Rick dropped me off with the luggage. We went to the Lattitude area and was given our Nassau card to fill out. We weren't finished with that, was told to start going on ship. From time of arrival, it took less than 15 min. and we were in our lovely cabin.

Balcony cabin was a bit smaller than the Dawn balcony cabins. I thought so anyway. Our cabin stewards were great keeping our cabiin spic and span clean. Towel animals every night, except one.

We unpacked our carry on bags and then to Raffles for a quick bite. And to explore the ship.

Since there is no fridge on the Spirit in the cabins. I had to keep my insulin cold by putting it in a glass and in our ice bucket. A day later, our cabin stewart gave us a small cooler to keep the insulin and new ice twice a day. Tipped them extra for that idea. It was great. I was going to use the Medical Ctr fridge. Rick had called NCL cust. service weeks before and was told I could use the Med Ctr and get my insulin 24/7. So to answer Sharon/Gold Mom, I didn't use their fridge.

Will continue. Have to go to the Gym to work off the extra food we ate. Part 2 later on.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the Spirit. We certainly did! I won't ruin Electricron's fun though and ask if you saw the - - - - - - in the Galaxy of the Stars. :p

Any plans to go again soon?

We found Raffles to be ok. Had lots of snacks and salads for lunch. Breakfast there every day except for 1 day at Windows. They need to have NCL people telling you where to go. There is no direction when its crowded and people cutting in line. Not being rude, there is no system and its confusing. Lot of repeated foods over and over. Stir fry was great, loved that. Coffee was lousy most of the time. Too weak or too strong. We ate either in Garden or Windows Dining Rooms. We loved the Food. Fisrt night prime rib dinner was out of this world. We found Windows Dining room to have too much noise if your table is in the back by the large windows. The menu has changed. Lots of seafoof and fish. My husband loved this. I had the veggie dinner one night on Caribbean night. That was very good. We never used the pay extra dining rooms. We were very happy with the food. We only ate sugar free desserts Some were great and some were awful. But, I find this with all sugar free desserts. We loved the Blue Lagoon. I was so happy to find my chicken wings the first day. There was reports here that item was removed from their menu. We loved the tomato soup and won ton soup too. Too bad, its such a small area.

We did the fun and sun tour in Cocoa Beach. A bus trip to the Holiday Inn to use their beach and pool. I wasn't able to walk on the beach. I had knee surgery a few months ago and walking their beach in the sand was too hard. They stopped at the Ron Jon store on the way back, which we did. This tour was way over priced. Next time, we would do the Space Ctr, Pakrs in Orlando, or stay on the ship

In Miami, afraid to walk on the sand, we took the B&B hopper to South Beach. Strolled around taking in the sights and taking lots of pictures. Sat in a open cafe, had chicken wings and iced coffee for lunch. Took the B&B to the Bayside Market. I thiink thats the name. Strolled around there for a hour and back to the ship. I missed going to the beach there. We did that the last time.

We were the first tender to GSC. Got seats right away. I was able to walk on the sand and get in the water. IT was great and I was happy to get in the sallt water. Back on the ship by noon to enjoy ship pool; and hot tubs.

Nassau, after being there at least 8 times. There is really nothing we need to see or buy. We took a long walk and wanted to have a snack in the Hardrock Cafe that CC friend TVlady2 did the last time. It was only 930am and they opened at 11am. We didn't want to wait and went back on the ship to enjoy the empty pool and hot tubs for the rest of the day.

Galaxy of the Stars night club/bar is so great and a neat place to hang out. A great picture taking area. Lots of windows for sea viewing. Take a walk down the winding stairs to see the Bridge and famous dragon.

Spirit is a beautful ship with a Chinese theme. Lots of wood. We enjoyed the wooden deck chairs on deck 7 to read, relax or just watch the ocean go by.

The staff was amazing. We were always greeted with a hello and how are you by everyone. We think the NCL staff is outstanding and gives super service.

We spend a few hours one night in the casino playing the slots. We are not really casino people.

We saw only 3 shows and they they were very good. Spent alot of time in King Henry's pub listening to a guiitar player and singer. We had seen him on The Dawn at Dazzles on past cruises. The theatre seemed strange. You entered in front where the stage was.Rick was in the talent show that was at 5pm Friday. There was 5 acts. A poor turnout. I think at that time people are getting ready for dinner and evening. But, Rick enjoyed playing the drums.

CD Julie was great. I don't know why she has rec'd some bad reviews here. She and the hotel Dir. came to our CC meeting. It was Monday 11am till noon on deck 8 in the Clipper Conf room. Coffee, tea, and cookies were provided. It was nice meeting our roll call friends.

Kids program looked like lots of fun and heard good reports about it. There was many young teens roaming the halls all night a few times. One night they knocked at our cabin. Other passengers complained about this too. We found this annoying. Kids pool and play area was awesome. I wished I was a kid again.

I found the shopping to be better than the Dawn. I thought more selection and pricing.

We went on this ship, because we loved NCL in the past and it was a good value. My husband can spend the whole week on the ship and be happing taking pictures and looking out at sea. We still prefer the Dawn. But, if the price was right and could get time off from work was right, we would still sail the Spirit.

There is really nothing else I can add. There have been many reviews the last few weeks. And my roll call friends wrote a few reports too. Any questions, please ask and I will try to help. Happy Cruising.

Thanks for the review. We're still considering the Spirit for the fall. We love the Dawn and this way if we go on the Spirit at least we know better what to expect. Did the buffet area have a deli/sandwich area like on the Dawn?

Hi Carol, we were on the Dawn together with Maureen.

Sharon..The Dawn had a better selection. They and a coldcut area with asortment of bread and rolls for sandwiches. Half the time for lunch, one side of the buffet area would be closed. Kind of silly, because they could have used both sides. No veggie section like our Dawn had.

:) Thanks for you thoughts here and your input on the 4/23/06 roll call. The more opinions the better we can judge. Julie was the ACd on our Dawn Cruise early last year. She was fine but not at the time the CD. I thought she would be fine when she became CD and I appear to be on the money. We look forward to seeing her on 04/23

Hi, this is Rick (Mr. Maurick) My quick review on the 4-2-06 Spirit sailing:

When we arrived in N.Y. the Latitudes cruisers had to sit on the upper level of the waiting area. Although it was nice to get onboard quickly I had a heavy carryon piece of luggage and had to carry it up the stairs to wait. We filled out the immigration cards ( I guess that is what they are called) then I had to carry the rolling carry on back down the stairs. We were the last of the Latitude member to go down the stairs.

Yep the cabin was smaller than the Dawn but for the two of us it wasn’t bad. There is less drawer space than the Dawn. Cabin steward and his assistant were very, very nice. They had 32 cabins to take care of and did an excellent job. One day the steward and his assistant stood on the balcony and explained what the PILOT did. For those that don’t know he/she is a person works in the port. He waits for the ship to get close; he gets brought to the incoming ship by boat, boards the ship, goes to the bridge, and helps the captain of the ship bring the ship to port. I am not sure if he actually controls the ship (I don’t think so) or stands by the captain and tells him where to go. He also boards the ship upon departure and guides the ship away from the port. We were watching him get off the ship and onto the boat.

Good points ---

If you are a Latitude member it is great getting on the ship first.

The food was great. I don’t eat as much when I am home. Don’t be afraid to ask the water/waitress for 8 lobster tails! You can get them if you smile. Yes eight and I ate them all, great for my cholesterol.

The shows we went to were entertaining, better than watching TV at home.

GSC Island was beautiful but get there early for the best beach chairs.

If you like exotic wood décor better than chrome and glass you can appreciate the beauty of the ship, especially the library area.

I like looking in at the bridge you have to get there by going down a spiral staircase. That is were the DRAGON head is. He is interesting to look at but don’t look directly into his eyes. Too much good luck is not a good thing.

The Cruise director was very friendly. I got a chance to talk to her at the Cruise Critic meeting. I also saw her after a show and asked her questions about the talent show.

I had a blast playing Wipe out in the talent show. If you sing you can bring your own CD or sheet music and they will play it for you.

Things that were not so good.

No refrigerator in cabin.

Seats in the Stardust Theater did not feel sturdy. Hard to explain but the seats we sat in felt like we were falling forward. I saw one broken seat and maybe that is why I noticed the feel of the seat more. Or maybe it was the 8 lobster tails I ate.

More garlic in the escargot was needed; I only ate two orders of that.

The movie theater was in a conference room and was actually a video tape or CD on a not so wide screen TV. We did not stay to watch it.

Sugar free deserts were not great. They always seemed to be a type of moose on a white cake, all they did was change the flavor of the moose. They did have sugar free ice cream which was good.

We were asked if there was any special occasion we were celebrating. It was our 29th anniversary. Why we were asked I don’t know.. Nothing happened.

On the Dawn the whole band played Wipe out with me. Here they only had a bass guitar and keyboard player. It came out good but it sure would have been better with a full band. I still had a lot of fun playing with them and they were great guys. I didn’t win but never planed on winning anyway it was fun to do. OOPS this statement sounds like it should be listed under good points. Sorry

People I would like to thank on the ship if they go to the board.

Our Cabin steward and assistant.

The waitress that gave me 8 lobster tails

The Captain for finding good weather for us.

The two members of the band that figured out how to end Wipe Out

Thanks for the review. We're going in June. I think I will stop at 2 or three lobsters. I will balance out the calories by having a non-sugar free desert.

Thanks for the review. We are sailing 5/7 and have been on the Dawn twice before.

Glad to hear that the chicken wings are on the menu, had heard they weren't also.

Also had Julie as ACD on the Dawn and thought she was good.

What did you think about the new menus, were you always happy with the selection?

Yes, we were happy with the new meus. I thought there was too much fish and seafood. But, my husband thought it was great. I wasn't too fond of Caribbean night's menu and nad the veggie selection that night. And off to the Blue Lagoon for chicken wings to keep hunger pains away. You will have a awesome time.

Sharon..from what I recall..there might have been some at dinner. We don't know about lunch. We never ate lunch in the dining room. Kathhas2boys from our roll call has been posting menus. Look there and see. I know she is posting dinner menus. I don't know if she is doing lunch menus.

you said that you parked at the pier, what is the price and is it easy to find it. We are going on May 28th and there is 7 of us so we thought we would drive there this time. What time did you arrive??? I think most of the buses arrive around 12:30-1:00.

Thanks

Glad to hear you enjoyed your Spirit cruise. We had a fantastic time on the Dawn 03/26!!!

We were at a friends house last night sharing cruise stories...we were talking about our sailing on the Dawn in 2003 and he said "Remember the ventriloquist who used an audience member as his dummy...that was so funny!!" Then it hit me...that was Rick!!!! Everytime we saw him on the ship after that we would say "OH YEAH"

Small world isn't it? :)

We arrived at the pier before 11am. Pakring is very easy there on top and safe. Its 24 for the day or 180 dollars for more than 8 days. Its only open when the cruise ships are in.

Hi Fundy Girl..glad you had a great cruise.

Yup that was Rick on stage! That was so funny. Talent show on the Dawn was better run and in the evening when more people came to watch. He still enjoyed playing the drums.

Happy Easter!
