Just off Magica! Pros and cons.....

Just off 5 day Western Caribbean yesterday on Magica. Like many others, I have read all the reviews but wasn't worried as I'm pretty happy as long as I'm not at work!

Here's my opinion on things..

Pros: Beautiful ship! Italian decor all the way..nothing subtle here. Great art work all around. Room was fine..plenty of storage..roomier bathroom than most. Room steward fantastic! Your basic cruise cabin.

Fun cruise director..always busy if you want to be. Shows were good in my opinion..very entertaining all around.

Loved the variety of languages, cultures, etc. Didn't meet a single rude person as other posts have described!

Cons: Food okay...I eat pretty much everything so I'm not picky. Not much variety though..breakfast pretty much always the same. Omelete stations always busy as there are only a few and manned by one cook. Never had any "make your own" crepes which I was looking forward to. Pancakes and waffles in the buffet always cold. I never went to the restaurant for breakfast.

Lunch your standard fare..dinners were fine. Expected more in dessert dept but managed to eat just fine!

Tendering to Cozumel a disaster...for anyone out there..I would book a cheap excursion just to get priority off the boat! Our day in Cozumel was to start at 8 am and most couldn't get onto island until 11:00....Costa really needs to improve on this!

A side note that didn't concern everyone..I was on Deck 7 where there were daily security episodes with a group of young people. Each night they would get drunk and proceed to break things in the hallways, scream uncontrollably, etc. Security was "posted" on our floor. In my opinion, they should have been escorted off at the first port. Any decent hotel wouldn't tolerate that and it made the other passengers miserable putting up with them each night. (we did fill out complaint forms with customer service..who knows if anything will come of that)

In any case...was it fun? YES!!!!!!!!!!!

Would I cruise Costa again? Probably not but who knows.....

We just got off the same cruise. The ship was beautiful. Food okay. We were also on Deck 7. "Security" did not do anything to control those young people. We were advised by our cabin steward not to leave our bags outside our cabin doors on the last night for fear that they would be ransacked. My daughter as well as others waited until they were picked up by Costa personnel (around midnight). Excursion staff personnel were rude and in our opinion incompetent. Roatan should not be a cruise ship stop until the island is ready to accommodate many people getting off ships and seeking transportation. Would we sail Costa again? Definitely not!

We will be taking the transatlantic for FLL on May 5. Hopefully the ship is still in good condition. There's usually lots of kids on spring break during the Easter break and the Carib is a popular destination. I would think that our 16 day cruise to Europe will be populated by mostly seniors. This will be our first Costa experience. I hope we will not be discourged.

How was the shows? We are going to have lots of days at sea so that we are looking forward to nightly entertainment.

I thought the shows were okay...mainly consisting of Costa singers and dancers who were excellent! A variety of show tune skits, etc. A duo of incredible acrobats, a "physical" comedian that I didn't care for... a mime(sp?) type. Each show only about 40 minutes.

As for the kids, they were mostly late teens/early 20's. Last night ended in a fist fight..NOT PRETTY. I hope your longer cruise doesn't attract them!

Thanks folks for your comments on shows. DW loves production shows especially after dinner. Also a little bit of dancing and listening to music. The May 5 Magica transatlantic will be featuring the Tommy Dorsey Band. Looking forward to some nice listening music.

That bored woman is probably bored everywhere in life. I had a blast on the Magica, but am going back to Carnival next time. But, I would sail Costa again! Lots of fun.

What.........because your fun is not her fun. Not everything that makes you happy will make others happy, you have never been bored in your life. Some people expect more, some less that doesn't mean they go thru life being bored.

What a ridiculous statement to make.

Hey Jim, if you slept 4-6 hrs a night you didn't get the most out of your cruise :)

Honestly I don't understand the differences of opinion about the Magica. We didn't have 300 screaming kids runnng around so maybe that had something to do with it. But how could the food be so good on our cruise, and the 3/5 cruise and so bad on another cruise???

food is such a personal opinion. I thought the food was good to very good, but didn't like the buffets at all (other than the omelet station at breakfast).

My dh didn't like most of the food, other than the escargot (which were the best he ever ate, anywhere). We eat out ALOT, everything from an occasional TGIF or Appleby's (usually lunch) to local ethnic specialties (everything but Indian - neither of us care for that) to 4 star steakhouses - but we seldom order the same dishes and there are things I love at one restaurant and he hopes to never see again ;) .

We prefer to cruise on Princess and dh really enjoys their food and I find most of it edible if unmemorable. I actually liked the food best on the old Home Lines (truly 5 star Italian food) and second best on Carnival (wide variety and local foods).

So I don't think it was different food, but different tastes.

jeff - i wish i could have not slept then slept for a week straight at home, but work and other duties called.

i am also wondering what cruise line we were on?!?! it seams like we were on a totally different cruise than what these people are describing! what happened?!

maybe it is because this was one of or THE last cruise in the caribbean and the crew was worn out, beat up and tired and is just looking forward to the end of thier 8 month work rotation 7 days a week, 12 hours a day and want to go home? - just a theory, i dunno, but it deffenetly seams like a different ship.
