Rare Gardyloo Posted June 25, 2004 #1 Share Posted June 25, 2004 Two items of possible interest to Alaska travelers in today's Seattle media. First, the City of Seattle has announced that the Seattle Center monorail, which had a fire in one of the trains a couple of weeks ago, will be out of service for an indefinite time, "3 or 4 months." That means the rest of the summer tourist season obviously. This will make lodgings near the Center more difficult to access than before (still not terrible, but worse); however anyone planning to stay near Seattle Center during the Labor Day Bumbershoot Festival might want to give it a second thought. Literally hundreds of thousands of people attending, many of whom now will be looking for other means of getting to the Center, i.e., cars. Second, there's a very interesting column in one of the local papers this morning regarding cruise tourism in Southeast Alaska. Here is the thread, definitely worth a read: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/connelly/179454_joel25.html
Krazy Kruizers Posted June 25, 2004 #2 Share Posted June 25, 2004 :) Thanks for the report. We had heard about the fire in the monorail a couple of weeks ago. We loved riding them when we were in Seattle. :)
rxmurphy Posted June 25, 2004 #3 Share Posted June 25, 2004 Gardyloo Thanks for the heads up. I was in Seattle Tuesday on business and scoped out the town, learned about the monorail. Article gives nice perspective. In the past you've given great tips for us, plan to use them in July, glad we are able to spend the day before the cruise in your fair city. Yukon Posted June 25, 2004 #4 Share Posted June 25, 2004 >>With the village's forests stripped, Huna Totem has turned to one Alaskan industry that is fueled by the state's natural beauty -- and which doesn't strip away a resource and then leave.<< Interesting article from a few perspectives, but it would make a very interesting debate to discuss whether a clear-cut forest or a tourism village such as Glitter Gulch (a.k.a. Denali) is more of an eyesore and/or more environmentally damaging. Murray
