Just off of Golden 6/20-6/27

Recommended Posts

Just off of the Golden ending 6/27. We were in an AB Mini, D-629. We flew in a couple days early and stayed at the Hampton Inn & Suites in Isla Verde. $10 taxi to the hotel, and I think it was a $16 taxi to the port. Hotel was fine, got a nice upgrade. Plenty of places to eat nearby (ethnic and regular). Was also close to shopping for all those last minute extras.

Got to the port around 12:30. Sat in the "pre-check-in" room for about 30 minutes before they let us line up to actually check in. We are Plat so the Plat line was very short once we got in there and the check-in process took about 3-4 minutes. Through security and onto the ship without a problem. Everything was set-up in the cabin and we almost immediately ran into our steward, Edwin. He was great and had robes for us in only a few minutes. We gave him some of our specific requests, fruit, etc. and he took care of us for the week. Unpacked, made some reservations in some of the dining rooms and just relaxed.

Had a great dinner. We went with the PC which we love and sat with Alek from Poland and Peter fom Slovakia and they were the best! We ate wih them everynight in the Donatello (sp?) room. (The one on the 5th floor). Their section had table #'s 26 and 28 (and a bunch more). If you eat with them, tell them the couple with the pregnant wife that ordered spaghetti and meatballs every night says hello! Tell them we hope they are wearing the "tighter pants" we asked for!

Sailaway party was ok. It was 11pm so a lot of people we tired. They do give a bottle of champagne to the first person fully clothed that jumps into the pool.

St. Thomas was nice as always. We did the Sea Kyacking (sp?) and that was fun. Shopping was good as always.

St. Kitts was only so-so for us. We just wanted to walk around and that wasn't the best idea. If we go again I'll look for a good taxi driver and ham him give us a tour.

Grenada was fun. Paid a taxi driver, $20 per person to drive us around. Took us to a couple waterfalls and some senic overlooks. Much cheaper than going through the ship and went to all the same places.

Isla Margarita is where we decided to keep to ourselves. We hopped off the ship for a few minutes to do some quick shopping and found a great necklace for the wife, but basically stayed on the ship that day. They did have many more excursions than last year, so we might try those next time.

Aruba was great. Did the Horseback riding. It was a blast. They tell you to bring your bathing suit and a towel. Don't bother - you trot down to the beach in a section where the water is quite rough. You spend about 10 minutes there to drink some water, etc. and really don't go near the water. It was a great time, but I wish I had know that. I'd still do it again in a heartbeat.

The CD was James - he did a god job. He was very visable and keep everybody well informed. The captain was very quiet. Only heard him make announcement when we were leaving a port.

The casino was great. (We won a bunch). Buffet as good. Fruit wasn't as ripe as it should be, but for the two lunches we ate there, it was fine. Photographers did a nice job as well. Found out that you can buy the digital images of your photos if you want, but I think it is pretty expensive. Something like $100 for 4 digital files.

Brad is the SCUBA instructor on staff and he is one of the best. Absolutely top notch and will take care of you if you SCUBA. He also works the Tour Desk and will look out for you there too.

Got off the ship about 8:10am. We had Red 1 tags for an early flight. We carried all our bags off and was at the airport by 8:30am. You do not have to go through the agriculture inspection if all your bags have cruise ship tags on them. We printed out our boarding passes while on the ship and was at our gate by 8:45. 35 minutes from ship to airport gate - not bad at all! (I do work for an airline, so that helps too.) We made our 10am flight with tons of time to spare!

I'm sure I'm missing a bunch - so, any questions?

Thanks for the great review. Did you dine in Sabatinis at all? Is there a good night to miss the regular dining room and opt for a specialty resturant. We were thinking of going to Sabitinis the first night (Sunday) being the regular dining rooms are open seating that night. Any suggestions on shows on-board that should not be missed?

Hi,

Glad to hear you had a good trip. How was your cruise director? Was he funny and entertaining? What was his name - James??? Is he new to Princess?

Thanks

We ate at the Sterling Steakhouse which they also call the Desert Rose Steakhose. It was fair. The steakhouse has only been in operation since the dry-dock so they really haven't developed a good flow yet.

We did have a reservation for Sabitini's, but we cancelled it because we were enjoying our waiters so much.

To be honest, I have never really cared for the shows that Princess puts on. They still have that darn "Lights, Camera, Action" show! I could swear I saw that 3 years ago! We do go to the comedy shows, etc., but those change so often a review wouldn't be much help.

I believe the CD's full name is James Lay and I think he is VERY new. He is quite young, looks like late 20's, but all in all I think he did a fine job. He was very visable which makes all the difference.

How did you enjoy your mini-suite? Is there room for a lounge chair on the balcony? We will be only a few cabins down from where you were in January. Thanks for the review.

Mini was great - the balcony came with 4 chairs and a table, so I guess if you wanted to re-arrange, you could fit two lounge chairs by taking the other chairs out.

oo5flyer, thanks for the review. We are doing the same itinerary in Oct. When the ship was docked in SJ, was there a duty free shop in that same terminal?

Traveller - Sure - go ahead and use the review.

And yes, this is a small duty free shop across the lobby from where you check in. We used it to buy a case of water for $17 - saved us a bundle! (There is plenty of booze and smokes too...)

We too have a very early flight out of SJ. If we pre-print our boarding pass (I assume we can do that in the internet lounge??) how to we go about checking in our luggage? Is it a different (shorter) line than regular check in or do you just give it to an employee at the curb? I've used the pre-printed boarding passes often, but never when checking luggage.

Thanks for your response.

It depends on the airline. I work for Continental, so when you check in on-line, it give you your reservation number Then when you get to the airport, you go to one of the self service kiosks and touch the button to "Check Bags." You then enter the reservation number, how many bags you are checking and viola!

Each airline is different so you will want to check with yours.

Thanks for all of the info! We're doing our honeymoon cruise on the 7/11 sailing.

Wondering what movies were being shown and if anyone knows how often those change? Hubby to be and I are both big movie buffs.

Also, are there music or movie channels on the in-room TV? I was thinking of bringing along a small CD player & speakers. Thoughts?

Thanks!

We are going on the same cruise 11/7/04. On our last cruise on RCI Adventure of the Seas we also departed out of SJ. When we got back to SJ, we didn't go thru Customs until we got off the ship. We had long lines, & it took quite a while. When & where did you go thru Customs?

Hey Scuby - I tried to e-mail you, but you have your preferences set to not receive them. Would be more than happy to chat....

I've gone diving with Princess on 5 cruises so I should have some good info for you.
