cheapskate NYC pier

Recommended Posts

I have too much free time on my hands, so I'm trying to figure out a way to not pay the $24/day NYC pier parking. Any tips? I wouldn't mind taking a bus or subway if I could cheap-out on the parking. Thanks.

Hey Nitnee,

Not to be picky but again NJ is a big state, I grew up in Wayne. Are you near Path or jersey transit buses? Either of those would get you into the city and then you need to find the subways/buses/taxi to take you the rest of the way. DH works in the city but he is running errands right now, when he gets home I will ask him for more detailed info.

I found this info on the new york pier website that Derf gave the web address to.

there is no public transportation to or from the terminal. The closest public transportation is the A, C or E train at the 50th St. station (at 8th Ave). Cross town City buses are also accessible from 52nd St at 12th Ave.

What is the cost of a taxi from local airports? · JFK Airport has a flat rate of $35 * plus tolls.

· LaGuardia Airport is approx. $22 – 30* plus tolls

· Newark Airport is approx. $45 * plus tolls

* Price may increase depending on traffic

What is the cost of a taxi from Penn Station or Port Authority Bus Station?

Depending on traffic the cost can vary, usually $5.00 and up

Hope this helps

You're not picky!! Coming from South NJ, but would be willing to go to any path,, bus station, etc.

Geez Nit,

If you are coming on this board posing as a "cheap skate", couldn't you at least do it under a screenname like Wolverine or Buckeye or Lepracon!?!

I have researched this before and if I am not mistaken, the train from Philly to NYC is your most direct public transit route. If you want to drive, I am told you can also find a parking area in NJ near mass transit, where the rates will be lower and take public transportaion from there. Find someone who works in NYC in the Financial district, and they should be able to set you up with options.

Parking your car in NYC costs you more that your car payment.

Just had another thought-

Since you are in So Jersey, check out casino tiur buses. Don't they run a million of them hauling down people from NYC/No NJ to pull the slots? See what it takes to get on one going toward NY.

Hey Nitnee,

from south jersey you can take the train to Penn station on new jersey transit from trenton. it is $28 rt. My Ds does this to come home from college in Philly all the time. Then you can take a taxi, which the pier website said was 5$ but is probably a little more, but it is still better than 180$

Here is the website to see the schedules.

plan on taking nj transit train into penn station (costs about $15 and change per person r/t, then a taxi to the port, son works in the city said it would cost bout $10/$15 with tip, then viceversa home.

total cost $50-$60 for two:D

btw, i'm not cheap, just wanna spend all my hard earned cash onboard:p

anyway thats my plan for now, just have to check on luggage restrictions, if any (plan on packing lighter, since they have laundry machines onboard) no fun, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do (maybe on a cloudy sea day;)

Just so you know my DS has brought home some pretty big suitcases with her coming home from college so it shouldn't be a problem. You might want to travel non-rush hour time just to avoid the daily commuters

Another Lion here -- class of '88.

To answer your original Q. Here's the cheapest way to go (not counting walking -- hey if you went to UP [i'm an alum volunteer recruiter & we're not allowed to call it main campus] & are still in decent shape, it's probaly possible if not practical )

Get somebody to drive you to the train station nearest your house. Worst case you pay for a local taxi.

Take a train to NYC Penn Station. It'll probably be about $10-12 pp.

In NYC, take a cab to the pier. Another $10 + tip. This you could walk if you really wanted to: 34th between 7th & 8th to 50's & 12th Ave. Or you could do internet research to find out if there's some kind of cross-town bus or subway. I don't like public transportation so can't be much help. I know there is a subway up town from Penn Station so you'd only have to walk from 7th or 8th Ave to 12th.

Good luck.
