Safety of Princess Ships

fuzzywuzzy

I wonder why I was told he was fired? Now I am very curious to know why some of the staff thinks he was fired? I did hear he had a great reputation in the past! Does anyone know positively where he is and why he is no longer on the Crown.

I have contacts on the Crown so I have asked to find out the real reason. Rumour control (as I like to call it) is a ferocious beast on ships amongst the crew, the fact that he left (if he did indeed leave) would have been enough for them to assume he was fired. It could be that he had to go to Santa Clarita (Princess Head Office) to be debriefed after the incident. It’s very unlikely he was fired, he’s been with Princess for 35 years and was my captain in the Grand earlier this year. I am sure he has had his fair share of incidents over the years. I will keep you posted.

Don't know who you are or where you are Horatio, but you make much more sense on this board than most posters - especially those who were not on the Crown during the "incident" or those who have never cruised Princess before.

I recall Captain Andy being discussed elswhere on this board, though I do not have a link.

He was scheduled for a vacation. Then the list happened, and his vacation was postponed until everything was put back in order. He was the captain for my 7-29 cruise on the Crown. On the next cruise, his vacation began. He will be back.

At least that is what I remember reading in the other string, though I am too lazy to search for it right now. He was not fired. All the firings were done before my 7-29 cruise.

Does anyone know positively where he is and why he is no longer on the Crown. After all, it is a new ship and he disappeared after about six or seven sailings. I was also repeatedly told the list was human error when someone switched from steering to autopilot. My room had broken molding and marks on the wall where the tv had fallen. They tried to clean the marks this week, but the dents are still there. AGAIN, I was not frightened and the ship sailed without any listing. Nice trip.

Have you never worked for a large organization and seen how all sorts of rumors start and expand until the final story hardly resembles the original in any way? Gossip and speculation frequently run rampant in certain situations.

Even these boards tend to include posts from people with overactive imaginations who can take the simplest fact and transform it into something dark and mysterious. Captain Bill Wright brought the Freedom of the Seas across the Atlantic, sailed her on a few pre-inaugural cruises and her inaugural cruise and then turned command over to Captain Pedericini, so it does not seem remarkable to me that the Captain of the Crown Princess might leave the ship after six or seven cruises, especially after this incident. BTW, I think your use of the word "disappeared" makes his leaving sound more sinister than the facts would indicate, and I think it is very unfair to try to link his absence to the event without any evidence to support such a supposition.

Maybe we should all relax and wait for the report to be published and the facts established before we rush to any rash conclusions.

There are so many other incidents, albeit not so severe, that occur on ships that you probably wouldn't cruise if you dwelled on each and every one.

I have a coworker who does exactly that, she says she'd never cruise because of all the bad things that happen on cruise ships. I keep telling her it's no less safe than staying at a hotel--hotels can burn down, people can be kidnapped from hotels, people fall off hotel balconies...OK, maybe they don't have to worry much about their hotel listing or being struck by a rogue wave, but still. And she says, "Yeah, I don't care, I'm not getting on a cruise ship, I wouldn't feel safe." I guess that just leaves more space for the rest of us!

I personally feel that the Captain was probably under a lot of stress after this unfortunate incident with the "LIST" on the "Crown" and took a leave or vacation to rest up. He has been with Princess for many years .

"This is a non issue as Andy Proctor was due to go on vacation on 07/20 after the list and Nico Binetti was scheduled to relieve him in a normal rotation. However Capt Proctor stayed on board 2 additional weeks after the list to get things aboard in order. Nico will be onboard until mid September when Capt Proctor returns. Nico will then return to the Caribbean Princess."

WHAT??

:D

Actually, I think it was Nicolo Binetti who was Master of Regal Princess on my Panama Canal cruise – and I think he was on board when Regal Princess was run up on a sandbar by the pilots in the Amazon.

Silly Bdjam, our captain was Angelo Vago. :D

I think you could be the Captain BDJAM, you've been on enough cruises !!! But what would you do about FORMAL NIGHT ??? hahahahahaha - sorry couldn't resist, I saw they closed that topic for awhile so you can all cool down a little. How have you been ? Have you heard from Brett and Joe lately ? Not much new here with me - divorced (apparently being home 10 months out of 5 years isn't good for a marriage !!) But all is good. If you don't have my e-mail address anymore, get it from Brett, he has it.

Hope all is well with you. BTW - formal night where I live means you have to have shoes on and your shirt has sleeves !! :)

Take care

What ColoCruiser and whovous and others said is correct.

I was on the 7/11 sailing and experienced "the list". The new captain had already come on board BEFORE the incident and everyone knew that Captain Andy was leaving. It's standard procedure.

I can't stand it when slanderous remarks are made without any supporting evidence. "I heard............."

Bull hockey, as Colonel Sherman T. Potter used to say.

Good i hope nothing happened to Captain Andy Proctor. I do not blame the list problem on him at all.

Why would or how could the ships captain shut down or destroy the generators????

Ron

Oh, some people just like to blame the captain personally for everything...

You could just as well hold George W. Bush responsible for it, as he's in charge of the country where the ship is based. :D

It seems to me that this thread may have outlived its usefulness. The OP's question has been addressed. The Captain is currently on vacation, not fired, and, until the final report is published posts, which attempt to assess blame on anyone are senseless and potentially libelous. IMHO, it is time to move on to other matters.

Well I knew it was someone Italian - at least I got that right. :D

If I was Captain on formal night, I’d wear my formal uniform?

Hey – I know better. Your formal night/champagne waterfall party on Star Princess was THE best of all my Princess Cruises. Yes, I have seen Brett and Joe – I did Panama Canal (with above PartyBarbie) from Ft. Lauderdale to San Francisco back in May and we had a good visit - Brett's heading to Coral and I think Joe is on Golden. I heard you hi-jacked Frankie and took him to Alaska on Diamond?

I DO have your email address…look for a note soon.

it still gives one an uneasy feeling when this type of accident can happen due to human error on such a huge sailing vessel with stabilizers, etc. Hopefully all staff will be fully trained and measures put in place to ensure that this does NOT happen again. It was obviously preventable.

This seems to happen somewhere in the cruise industry every year or two. As long as humans are involved (and sometimes computers) this will happen on occassion. At one time or another, it seems to hit about all the cruise lines. That said, I certainly wouldn't shy away from cruising on any of the mainstream lines due to safety concerns. The staff is fully trained and measures are in place to ensure this doesn't happen, but ya know what? Stuff does happen sometimes.

So I spoke to my contact on the Crown, apparantly Captain Proctor was already in the middle of a handover when the list occured. He was leaving for holiday on schedule. He was not fired, like I said, don't listen to 'Rumour control'

Oh also the officer at the helm, and who caused the list/roll was fired.

Actually none of the Princess ships are based in the US. Most cruise ships are registered in the Bahamas/Bermuda/etc. for tax and legal purposes. So blame their president, not ours:)

I think Tero was being sarcastic as George gets blamed for everything anyway!

BTW, Tero, I have enjoyed all of your posts-so much good information.

Well I'm glad we cleared Andy Proctor as I think he is a great captain but I feel bad the officer in charge when the list happened had to be fired but I understand. Does anyone know who this person is? Where was he on the food chain as far as bridge officers go? How old and how long was he at sea? I was on the Crown during the list but i still feel bad someone lost thier job as a result.
