Safety of Princess Ships

Actually none of the Princess ships are based in the US. Most cruise ships are registered in the Bahamas/Bermuda/etc. for tax and legal purposes. So blame their president, not ours:)

I actuall meant "based" as in using as a homeport to start their journeys from instead of "registered at"... If they start their journey in the USA and follow their safety regulations, then it must be the fault of whoever is running that country. :D

I think Tero was being sarcastic as George gets blamed for everything anyway!

BTW, Tero, I have enjoyed all of your posts-so much good information.

Indeed I was... As much as I don't like the man, even I can't blame him for everything that's wrong in the world. ;)

Thanks. I hope it's been close enough to approximate the reality! :D

(My expertise of ship design is limited to the small presentations I've heard at the shipyard, and the electrical plans I've gone through.)

Deaths from motor vehicle accidents - 2002 43,005 in U.S.

1,200.000 worldwide

Pedestrian deaths - 2002 4, 882 in U.S.

Cruise passenger deaths - 50 in the past 10 years! Worldwide!

Should tell us all something, shouldn't it?

George boy may spend most of his time on vacation but at least he was not on my recent cruise!

By the way, I feel very safe on Princess. However, on my recent CB cruise packages brought back on board from Cozumel were not run through the machine and were not hand checked by security staff. They were just waving everyone on. Now the people who had purchased liquor at Cozumel loved this as they did not have to turn in their purchases, but I was a bit concerned about safety.

Saturday at disembarkation, I was waiting on my balcony and saw them unload a security screening machine from the ship and park it in the warehouse building. I wonder if the machine had broken down and was being replaced????

Notable stories on Cruiseblogger (www.cruiseblogger.com) – Radiance of the Seas had power failure and was without power for at least 15 minutes…it took 30 to power up the ship again. And Summit docked in Seward with a 25 foot long dead whale wedged into the bulbous bow –apparently struck by the ship.

I guess it’s not only Princess with operational issues.

The Royal Caribbean ship losing power is pretty scary I must say. Can you imagine just losing all power and effectively just foating in the ocean at the mercy of the waves? Thats just slightly scary especially if they were in bad seas.

Can you imagine how the whale felt?

A power failure like that is quite common believe it or not. My current ship had one this week, it lasted about 45 minutes, no power for that time. Luckily it was at 00:25hrs so most people were in bed. There are back-up generators that come on and power the basics so the ship is not in complete darkness. Although I have been on ships that have had complete failures and the backup generators did not power on like they were supposed to.
