Book Excursion or wing it?

We're on Destiny from San Juan on Aug. 19. Haven't pre booked any excursions. Should we book on the ship or wait till we get onshore? Esp. for Dominica. Will there be things to see by the dock? Want good photos of the island as well as the locals. Can't wait.

Excursions really aren't necessary, and can be expensive. I have not booked an excursion since my very first cruise back in 1987(which coincidently was from San Juan)... I do lots of homework on each port on the itinerary, and know where I want to go, grab a cab, and I'm off.

I don't pre-book excursions but have book on the ship.. Dominica we LOVED! But you have to do an excursion, there isn't much in town. For me it was a picture feast... If you are in to shoping Dominica is not the place.

I would do an excursion and see some of the island. We plan one of these days going back to Dominica for a week or so.. Great island..

Have Fun

I agree with cotton except for insecure first time cruisers. They might want to book through the cruise line.

Like cotton, we wing it on the piers except Grand Cayman where we book the "sting ray" tour on the internet with Capt Marvin.

Attitudes vary on Dominica but we like the island. It's small but has some good taxi tours. The taxi drivers are a little agressive to get your business so beware. We grabbed a taxi and his buddy acted as the guide and they took us up to the Warm Water Falls (Papa Falls). There is a short walk but a little streneous for some with breathing problems. I didn't have any problems and I'm 71.

Here are a couple of links to our website with 4 or 5 pictures pictures at Dominica.
