sea glass Posted August 18, 2006 #1 Share Posted August 18, 2006 Hi, I just cruised the Crown Princess and though there were some negatives...we had a very nice time on a beautiful ship and we were not sea sick. HOWEVER, since I arrived home I feel like the room is rocking and that I am still on the ship. I can not understand this because I felt fine on the ship. The problem is particularly noticeable in the morning. Can anyone out there tell me if this has ever happened to them? I really feel awful and dizzy. I don't know what to take...but I have to work ...and that is impossible...:( Help!
jenmax123 Posted August 18, 2006 #2 Share Posted August 18, 2006 I am not dizzy, but at times do feel like I am rocking. I have never felt like this after a cruise, but I personally think it is from all of the rocking the boat did. Just my opinion..
sjbdtz Posted August 18, 2006 #3 Share Posted August 18, 2006 What you're experiencing is normal. It typically lasts a few days...and is caused because you had your "sea legs"...which really meant that your balance center had adjusted to accommodate the regular motion of the ship, so that you didn't feel the rocking so much.... Now that you're on land, it has to readjust to terra firma. If it lasts more than a week, you could see a doctor...but I wouldn't think it is urgent... sea glass Posted August 18, 2006 Author #4 Share Posted August 18, 2006 Thank you. I just took two advil and dramamine. If I had felt like this on the cruise, it would have ruined the cruise. I wonder if it is normal equilibrium adjustment or perhaps I picked up a bug on the cruise. (I have a horrible headache too).

emdia43 Posted August 18, 2006 #7 Share Posted August 18, 2006 It always happens to me and each cruise it was getting worse and lasting longer, also I felt really groggy.... BUT,this time I took some Bonine at night for several nights after I got home and it really worked well. Usually I have to make sure I am stocked with groceries etc before I go or I would be arrested for drunk driving,I stagger around so much.
Druke I Posted August 18, 2006 #8 Share Posted August 18, 2006 As noted above, perfectly normal for many, with symptoms going away after a few days.
Nliedel Posted August 18, 2006 #9 Share Posted August 18, 2006 It takes me a full week to feel like I'm not on a ship anymore. My husband has the same thing happen to him. This too shall pass.

sea glass Posted August 18, 2006 Author #11 Share Posted August 18, 2006 Thank you everyone for being so kind and caring. I have been on many cruises and this only happened once, but it wasn't long lasting or this intense! Maybe I am just getting old. The advil and dramamine did not help and now I have to go to work. I will be back later. I hope I can work. Hope everyone else who sailed with me is well....... and not rocking, nauseous, dizzy and headachy..... MaryPoppinz Posted August 18, 2006 #12 Share Posted August 18, 2006 What you're experiencing is normal. It could be (and probably is) Mal de Debarquement. My own experience with it is that if I cruise more and longer, the symptoms are not as troublesome or long-lasting after the trip. It's usually worse for me after a calm, shorter trip. I have it in port most of the time, too (unless I'm on a boating excursion!) It's worse when I'm at rest than when I'm moving, and particularly so if I'm sitting down to read. The worst time, it lasted 3 weeks. Everything I've read about it says that the drugs for motion sickness don't really work for it and that the tincture of time is often the only 'cure,' -- but it can become chronic. People who have it chronically can get it from elevators, planes, etc. I hope the OP gets better shortly!
Redsgj Posted August 18, 2006 #13 Share Posted August 18, 2006 I had the same problem after our cruise on the Caribbean Princess (sister to Crown). I noticed a constant swaying motion everywhere on the CB too - not bad but it was always there and the seas were calm on that cruise. It must be the extra height of those ships or something! I noticed the swaying/dizziness fairly bad for about a week and then it improved dramatically each day for the next few days and then was gone! I didn't try Bonine last time but I might if it happens again after our cruise in October. It's not fun at all but hang in there!
rebeccalouise Posted August 18, 2006 #14 Share Posted August 18, 2006 what you are feeling is perfectly normal. I am 41 and took a 12 night cruise out of NY and it took me about 4-5 days to stop feeling ill. I think it does have something to do with age but I do seem to recall feeling this a couple years ago when I did a Carnival cruise to Nova Scotia (and that was only 4 nights). I guess the seas are rougher in the North Atlantic and this happens more than say a Caribbean or Alaskan cruise (which are very smooth). I just got off a Disney cruise and have felt no motion sickness at all. But there was no motion while at sea.
Nliedel Posted August 18, 2006 #15 Share Posted August 18, 2006 Ugh, now that it's mentioned I do notice it's getting worse as I am getting older. Bleah on aging!
MetalManCPA Posted August 18, 2006 #16 Share Posted August 18, 2006 I noticed the "sea legs" a copuple of times while I was in port. Yesterday, all day I felt like I was still on the ship. It wasn't a sick feeling, but more like the whole world was rocking underneath me. I was sick (flu) yesterday, but at least it waited until after the cruise. Now it's Friday, and that rocking feeling is gone, although I am still a tad groggy. After this cruise really lands home the saying - "I need a vacation" after the real vacation. sea glass Posted August 18, 2006 Author #17 Share Posted August 18, 2006 Well, maybe I have the flu too, exacerbated by Mal de Debarquement. The room is still rocking and I have a horrendous headache. I want to go back to the cruise....or how about another cruise (if we could just skip disembarking which left me listless and sick)....?
rebeccalouise Posted August 18, 2006 #18 Share Posted August 18, 2006 Don't worry- its not the flu. You will feel better soon.
atlasali Posted August 18, 2006 #19 Share Posted August 18, 2006 Our Easter cruise was rockin' and rollin'; but I took my Bonine and was fine...until the morning of the day after the cruise. Head spinning, flu like symptoms. I'm a teacher and the day after a holiday = you will be at your school or you better be admitted to a hospital! In fact, the machine to call-in for a sub was turned off! My husband had to phone my principal as I was too sick to get out of bed. Around 11:00am I had a thought, "What if I take a Bonine?" I did and within 20 minutes--I was fine! I needed to take the Bonine for the next 3 days. The problem was solved.
MilliesMom Posted August 18, 2006 #20 Share Posted August 18, 2006 Definitely normal after a cruise and/or riding a train long distance. I always have to be careful washing my hair (tilting my head back) after we return home. Should only last a few days. Taking a Bonine or Dramimine might help (but check with the pharmacist or your doctor to be sure). I've never been seasick on the cruise ... but always have the balance issue when we return for a few days.
Ethel5 Posted August 18, 2006 #21 Share Posted August 18, 2006 I didn't experience this until after my 15th or so cruise and I was totally amazed! It only happens once in a while but taking Bonine helps. It's really strange to be sitting there and feeling the living room rock!
minnie00 Posted August 18, 2006 #22 Share Posted August 18, 2006 I plan on taking Bonine for my whole trip to avoid sea sickness. Should I continue it for a couple days after the cruise?
AerynSun_JohnCrighton Posted August 18, 2006 #23 Share Posted August 18, 2006 I always take my bonine when on a cruise... adjust fine... and after 9 cruises... I am 'prepared' for the 'after voyage' affect of the 'rocking and moving' it IS normal... and I experience it on my first cruise at 14 and still experience it at my 10th at 22 years of age... it depends on the person how long it takes to 'go away' it takes me about 7 to ten days. I just tell ppl 'gotta get my land legs back' and laugh about it. Meg
allyfl Posted August 18, 2006 #24 Share Posted August 18, 2006 We were on the Crown in June and WOAH, I was really spinning when I got home for a few days. This whole thread shows why we're all on this board - we get REALLY sick on land, not the ship!!

Does anyone know if there is a significant difference between bonine and dramimine? I only have the latter in the house.
