Chenega Posted August 19, 2006 #1 Share Posted August 19, 2006 For anyone heading to Anchorage, pack some rain gear. We've had some pretty wet and blustery weather the past few days with flood watches along some streams in the Matanuska-Susitna region north of town. Weather in August is always unpredictable so pack accordingly.
katmandoo Posted August 20, 2006 #2 Share Posted August 20, 2006 And was wondering about packing since vancouver where we depart is supposed to be close to eighty degrees! We are spending a few days in palmer after our cruise, how bad is the flooding expected to be?
aussie jb Posted August 20, 2006 #3 Share Posted August 20, 2006 In 2004 it was bushfires, and now in 2006 it's floods. I just found this article this morning while reading the Anchorage Daily News. Katmandoo, it could be lucky that you are heading to Palmer and not Talkeetna http://www.matsugov.us/ Debbie

Although I admit to feeling some disappointment about the weather we experienced during our recent 12 days in Alaska, I now realize that it could have been worse and am now grateful! :D
Chenega Posted August 20, 2006 Author #5 Share Posted August 20, 2006 Oh yes! The Parks Highway to Denali is closed due to a bridge washout north of the McKinley Princess Lodge. It's expected to be closed several days. The Alaska Railroad is also cancelled on the Denali run due to track washouts. Weather forecast is calling for thunderstorms and possible hail tonight. What has happened is that two weather systems are sitting right over Southcentral Alaska and are being held in by a strong high pressure system over Canada. The result has been some pretty heavy wind and rain exceeding 7-10 inches in some areas. Yeah, we were pretty lucky!

jkfreeman33 Posted August 20, 2006 #7 Share Posted August 20, 2006 We leave Labor Day for 5 night land and then 7 night cruise. I've been watching the weather in Alaska and all is has shown is the rain clouds. I guess I'm packing the rain gear and corduroy pants & sweat shirts. Chenega Posted August 20, 2006 Author #8 Share Posted August 20, 2006 Wouldn't hurt to play it safe. For what it is worth, there's a light dusting of snow on the higher peaks of the Chugach and Talkeetna Mountains behind Anchorage.
