While watching for whales on the first Inside Passage day of our May 2006 cruise on the Norwegian Star, we had a whale swim directly toward the bow of our ship and then just to the starboard side. He was so close that we were actually cringing, expecting a collison. Since he didn't actually hit the ship, it was a pretty thrilling experience. But we were certainly surprised that he and his friend seemed to have no fear of our huge ship. Too bad the other whale didn't miss the Summit. :(
