jamaica71594 Posted August 20, 2006 #1 Share Posted August 20, 2006 I was just looking at some travel items (not that I need anymore), and stumbled on safes for your valuables that look like a can of hair spray, or household cleaner. Does anyone have this or seen it? I am going to purchase the hairspray can. It is such a good distraction for your suitcase or just to sit on your dresser on vacation. Who would think that it was a safe. The lid comes off and you can store your valuables in the can. It is so neat.:) Here is the link for those who want to see it! http://www.organize.com/cansasestaqh.html
Liv4cruzin Posted August 21, 2006 #2 Share Posted August 21, 2006 I bought one of those about 15 yrs. ago. Works beautifuly; but doesn't have much hiding space. Certainly can't imagine my passport fitting in mine. I later bought two more; one that looks like a can of soup & another that's a fake head of lettuce (for the fridge of course). Now that everyone knows my hiding places, I'll have to be more vigilant. :D
desperatehousewife Posted August 21, 2006 #3 Share Posted August 21, 2006 Where have I been?? I have NEVER seen anything like this, but what a great idea in general. Thank you for posting this!:D
Jane110 Posted August 21, 2006 #4 Share Posted August 21, 2006 About 10 years ago a friend of mine was arrested for selling drug paraphanalia. One of the items he was selling were these same fake cans that you can hide things in. I went to court with him and the judge looked at it and said, "I guess you'd better arrest my wife too. She also uses them". Not trying to make you nervous. These guys were a bunch of crazies that arrested him. But whenever I see those cans, I think of his horrible experience. Sorry for the digression. I think they're great as long as not enough would-be thieves are onto them! If I used them, I'd probably keep it in my make-up drawer with my other cosmetics rather than out on the counter of the cabin.
jamaica71594 Posted August 21, 2006 Author #5 Share Posted August 21, 2006 Wow Jane, I never thought of that, but I would probably leave it in my suitcase, or like you said, in the dresser drawer in our cabin or hotel room.

Jane110 Posted August 21, 2006 #7 Share Posted August 21, 2006 desperatehousewife, Well, yes the charges were dropped. But only after 5 years of work and legal bills that mounted to over $900,000. He lost everything. His business, his retirement funds, etc. Sorry, I didn't mean to get into it all and I certainly didn't mean for anyone to think they'd get arrested if they used these cans. They won't! I just think of his struggles for 5 years everytime I see one of those cans. I never heard of the fake head of lettuce, but I did hear about hundred's of thousands of dollars worth of jewelry being found in a chicken in the freezer after an elderly woman died! I've heard of the goose that laid the golden egg, but not a frozen chicken full of jewels! :)

I hope he is recovering... I did not mean to make light of a serious situation like that, I only assumed it wasrecognized as erroneous immediately! Sorry... She claimed that burgulars would NEVER find them there!! Yes, I guess not.... Happy ks Posted August 21, 2006 #9 Share Posted August 21, 2006 I'm sure these cans could be useful, but don't forget, most cruise ship staterooms now have safes right in the closet. Jane, how awful for your friend. I hope he was able to start rebuilding his life after such an ordeal. I had a co-worker who's MIL passed last year, she had cash hidden all over her house, all total it came to over thirty thousand. This was from a middle income - tract home average family. The husband and wife had allowance each week out of the budget, I guess she had never spent hers. I can't even hide $5 from myself!

I did not mean to make light of a serious situation like that, I only assumed it wasrecognized as erroneous immediately! Sorry... Our govt's RICO act allowed this to happen. Our tax dollars at work. He spent 5 years worrying that he could be sent to jail for 30 years. Luckily, his case was set before a sane judge. He's okay now, just doesn't have the financial security that he worked so hard to create for himself when he retired. Kind of like the poor Enron workers who now also have nothing for when they retire. :( OMG!!! I can only imagine the kids looking for ice ceam and dumping the jewels in the garbage after they didn't find any ice cream in the container!!! Yikes! Ehpride Posted August 21, 2006 #12 Share Posted August 21, 2006 Like on Jurassic park? The guy who played Newman on Seinfeld used a whipped cream can that was cold and had whipped cream on the top and a hiding place on the bottom to steal the dinosaurs. Sorry, but that's the first thing I thought of! If you use the safe, be sure to put your jewelry in something in there. I've read on here about people forgetting rings and other jewelry in the safe...oops!

I've read on here about people forgetting rings and other jewelry in the safe...oops! Good point. I use those little chinese silk pouches. It's so easy to accidently leave an earring or a ring because it gets pushed into a corner.
Leo Jay Posted August 22, 2006 #14 Share Posted August 22, 2006 Why wouldn't you just use an actual soup can? They have those safety can openers now than remove the lid entirely so there are no dangerous edges; you can just remove and put back the lid as needed. But I think it works best if you remove the soup before adding the jewelry.
brigittetom Posted August 22, 2006 #15 Share Posted August 22, 2006 Leo Jay, You're exactly right except when they first invented these cans they didn't have those great can openers yet. I've had one of those fake cans for years. It's a Pledge can which I keep with my cleaning products. I can't count the number of times I've pulled out that can to dust. :p I have a question. The gentleman who was accused of selling drug paraphanalia, were these fake cans the only thing he was selling?? I just don't understand why these cans would be illegal and why anyone would question anyone having or selling them. We all have hundreds of places to hide things. I've read that savvy thieves know all the tricks including the hollow books kept on the bookshelf and hiding valuables in the freezer. I have a friend who is head housekeeper in one of our local hotels. The housekeepers apparently think nothing of using products sitting on a dresser or bathroom counter such as purfume or hairspray. I wouldn't feel too confident leaving anything out in the open especially something filled with valuables. I also have read where things were left behind in the safe on a cruise but it's just so easy to avoid this. Simply run your fingers over the entire surface. I think sometimes we overthink things and outsmart oursleves. :)
