Harley-Davidson_Family Posted August 27, 2006 #1 Share Posted August 27, 2006 We have Nextel phones and plan to give one to my daughter to keep with her in the kids club. The last time we were there we tried to use Motorola walkie talkies and they didn't work. We heard everyone elses ramblings but it didn't work for us. Anyway, I would like to know if anyone had been sucessful in using the direct talk part of your phone. I assume that would work since there aren't any towers out there. Thanks. andnickali Posted August 27, 2006 #2 Share Posted August 27, 2006 I had my nextel on a E. Car. cruise and it did not work. I do not have the international plan so I did not get service on any of the islands either.

It should work at least as good if not better than the radios you can buy. We've used them occasionally during hurricanes when service is spotty and they were great up to several miles even with alot of trees and other obstructions around. Never used them on a ship though. You'll just have to make sure all your handsets are on the same channel and that they are all Direct Talk capable. And when you get off the ship remember to switch them back to regular service as it disconnects your phone service when you enable Direct Talk.
