Got the dress, what jewelry/shoes???

Ladies, help please!

I just bought the dress below, but am not sure what jewelry to wear. It is called Plum, but is slightly more on the burgundy side. I don't want to take away too much from the dress, and with the high neck (see link), I am stuck. I am usually a silver girl and am heavy, so bulky jewelry doesn't alway go for me. However, I do like bold. Also, should I wear black strappy dress shoes? What do you think?

If you click the link below, you can see the full dress, just in a different color. Thanks for your help!

Big earrings and bracelets, no necklace. A black strappy heel or a gold toned mettalic.

Take the dress shopping with you, see what looks best with the dress instead of guess work and returns.

I agree (strappy heels or even a dressy closed shoes, since this dress has sleeves).

Because of the glitz of the dress/jacket, I would wear nice earrings and maybe a flashier ring. Don't do a necklace, it will be lost.

How about satin dyed shoes to match ... many styles to choose from normally. That would look great and give the total look to the outfit.

The dress/jacket is really nice.

Bolder earings and a black or gold tone strappy shoe. I would forgo on the necklace and the bracelets. If you do choose to wear a bracelet, I would just wear a nice watch and maybe a simple bracelet. With the dress being long sleeve, your bracelet will look lost. Have fun accessorizing!

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok, so that dress is waaayyyyy too heavy!!! I love it, but decided to buy a different one. I love this new dress and know it is not too formal, but just had to have it. :D The bottom is a satin and flows really nicely (see larger picture).

What I need some help on is extras...I still have strappy black shoes I bought for the previous dress that I can wear. However, I have no idea for jewelry? Also, could I get away with some type of wrap, since I am always cold? What color??

Thanks for all of your help!

Gosh, this is going to sound bad so I apologize ahead of time...

Is that a dress or a costume?

I am confused as to what your goal is here and what it will be worn for?

Seriously, I am confused....I am NOT trying to be rude:confused:

No IT IS NOT A COSTUME!!! It is a dress, and I am not sure why you would say that! I am not a skinny little thing, and cannot wear just anything, like the strapless or spagetti strap dresses you all place on here. I guess I have very different taste then some people, but this is a dress. Do not let the title fool you. It is going to be worn for a formal night during a winter cruise. I cannot wear sleeveless, so I have to resort to short/long sleeves, so the options are slimmer.

I do like to get peoples opinions on jewelry and such. However, if you do not like the dress and are going to be rude...DO NOT COMMENT!!! I would rather have no help than mean remarks.

Thanks to everyone for any positive help you can give. :)

The dress is certainly nice - maybe not to everyone's taste (have I mentioned I really don't care for bla**?). ;) While it does have a a bit of Rennaissance detailing, it certainly isn't overboard and had modern details too (the hem and fabric choice). Nice overall style for someone who wants a bit more coverage of the shoulder and arm areas.

Sandals sound like a good idea to keep your outfit on the lighter side. Unless you really want to go "goth" with clunky shoes and bla** lipstick.

I have the same problems with clothing that you say you have. I absolutely love your new dress. It has style, a bit of vintage feel and doesn't look like a moo moo. Too often because we aren't skinny we are offered sack clothing. Wear this dress and feel great about it. I don't believe you need to look like everyone else anyway, how boring. I wish it was mine! :)

I like it because it is unique!

I will do my best on opinions for accessories but keep in mind they are not my area of expertise. Even so, you mentioned "bold" and that is something I am familiar with! I am thinking of a thick bracelet in either dulled silver or dulled gold (I think they call it vintage jewelry or antique jewelry). See if two matching ones look better. Try a choker or a short necklace with a vintage black (or color) stone. Because the choker is near your neck, you can skip the earrings. The sandal can be open-toed with some sort of criss/cross design...with not too high heel nor too flat.

Since it has sleeves and material on the shoulders, a wrap might detract from the whole look.

I could be totally wrong but I wanted to reply! Good luck and HAVE FUN IN THAT DRESS!

I like it, but then I'm always one to march to a slightly different drummer. You have to admit, it is unusual, but still appropriate.

If I already had black shoes, they fit & were comfy enough for dancing on formal night, I'd keep 'em.

I don't have the patience to deal with a shawl or wrap, but probably should, since I tend to buy sleeveless formals. I just had to learn to accept my arms. For a dress w/sleeves, how would you work a wrap? I just don't know. Actual question here.

I tend not to look at bracelets too much. My hands are too much in motion at work on a keyboard or other writing, so a bracelet would be in the way. Sorry, no help there.

Now, necklace & earrings - oooh. Winter cruise you said? You've got time. Try craft fairs or eBay. You're from Westminster - remember the craft fairs that came to Frederick or Montgomery College or Timonium - that kind. (I'm originally from Laurel, MD) Think colored glass & hand-worked metals. With that black dress you need COLOR on your chest & dangling from your ears. No glitzy rhinestones because of the style.

And the goth comment & black lipstick - totally inappropriate. She's looking for help for formal night.

Cptnkirky - desperatehousewife was not being rude or mean. She asked an honest question. She even apologized in advance. Please re-read her post.

I swear to you I was not trying to be rude or criticize... not at all.

My fault that I did not go back and read your original thread after you posted the new one. I thought maybe I had misunderstood ... the dress was sooo unusual.

I am sorry if you took it as a criticism, I said you might and told you it was NOT meant that way.

If you like the Renaissance flavor of this dress, I say go for it. Play it up. My early favorite would be this set:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Elven-Renaissance-Medieval-Circlet-Headdress-Earrings_W0QQitemZ290021758102QQihZ019QQcategoryZ12519QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I doubt I would work up the nerve to do it as a headpiece, but I could do it as a necklace. Your choice of colors, too.

If you don't care for that, there is a lot of listings for Renaissance jewelry on Ebay. I found lots of bold earrings.

You could also stay in the style with the shoes with some simple satin ballet flats or close to Mary Jane style shoes.

Please explain why "Goth" cannot be "formal", Sunshine91.

And, FYI, I wasn't endoring the "Goth" look, but I don't know the OP and maybe that would be a look she was interested in. I, personally, thought the sandals would help her get away from a "Goth" look. But then I saw some black sandals on a co-worker today (with a nice black print skirt and top) and I may just change my mind on that statement. It really depends on the sandal.

Thank you to everyone for your help.

RI-sailor, Even though my boyfriend is pagan and would love for me to go goth, I do not plan on it this time. Especially since he is not himself, he will be dressed to the nines. However, I really appreciate that you would even mention that as a possibility. Just shows how diverse your opinions are!!!!

I love the dress because it is different and wearable for me. From the repsonses I think I am going to look for something in aged silver and more on the antique/renaissance side; maybe with some color to liven up the black. Since the dress was only availible in my size in black, that was the color I got, but I am okay with that. My BF will be wearing a black suit with a nice blue shirt, which will liven us up as a couple. I will scrap the wrap this time around.

Thanks again to all of you for your help!! :) If I get pics of jewelry, I will definitly bring it to you all.

Sunshine - I love you are from MD, I miss MD dearly! My whole family still lives in MD/PA. I know exactly what you mean. I would be at a fair/market like the fells point festival to look for this stuff, if I could ;)

OK - I really had _no_ idea who I was making suggestions too! I was trying to warn you to keep the look you wanted in mind, since the dress was black, but didn't want to be insulting. I do realize that I've hung with some crowds that "experiment" more with fashion that the typical person you run into on the streets, which makes me choose my words pretty carefully!:D

There is a local band here called "Pendragon" they always say dragons have 5 sides: a left side, a right side, an outside, an inside...and a creative side! I try to keep this in mind!

Hi CptnKirky,

IMHO all of those except the 3rd one might be too much. I only say that because I think they will all hit too low on the chest for that dress. I may be wrong, cause I'm not exactly sure where the dress lands on your chest.

Here are some suggestions...Now I know you like bold, so I'm gonna try and find some bold items for you...hehe...but not all of them may be bold, so bare with me! :o)

This reminds me of the titanic necklace kinda...

Maybe some big pearls, in any color...

http://cgi.ebay.com/genuine-big-10mm-gray-round-pearl-necklace-big-9K-clasp_W0QQitemZ250028228338QQihZ015QQcategoryZ3844QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item250028228338

I was thinking even maybe a simple cameo

Hope these idea help a little...

I didn't expect them to come out so big on screen, but now we really can see the detail!

#6 from OP

Opinions (yes, just opinions on these). The last 3 look too long for the neckline of the dress. You might want to take some measurements and try it on with some stuff you already have to get an idea of what looks good (or even get a friend/sister to loan some of her stuff to try on if you can) and work with the dress. I like the color of #3 (Siam) but it does look a bit heavy. Of these, I think I like the first one the best.
