suzyluvs2cruise Posted August 29, 2006 #3 Share Posted August 29, 2006 We're just off the Radiance this past Saturday. We were told drydock would be sometime next year. We were surprised to see that alot of the furniture is in need of repair. In the colony club some of the upholstered furniture was worn on the arms and the stuffing was poking out. The wood cabinets/doors in our cabin were nicked and the wood rail on the balcony was dry and needed varnish. The bedding definitely needs an upgrade...............and quickly. Definite dips in the mattress.
zotzer Posted August 29, 2006 #4 Share Posted August 29, 2006 Radiance was just in drydock last February. As for the bedding schedule, it is on this board somewhere. Sorry, I didn't bookmark the thread. T
TeeBuccs Posted August 29, 2006 #5 Share Posted August 29, 2006 Wow, some folks must walk around looking very closely at all the tiny details. We sailed Radiance this past June (3 months ago) and didn't notice anything in dire need of repair. I have been on other ships with more noticeable needs. We loved the Radiance!!! cruzingduo Posted August 29, 2006 Author #6 Share Posted August 29, 2006 thanks for your responses, we are booked on the Radiance a few times in 2007. The Radiance class in my favorite.
birdergal Posted August 29, 2006 #7 Share Posted August 29, 2006 I happened to save the thread for this one. It said that the Radiance is due for new bedding 1/7/07 - 2/17/07. It should be ready for my cruise next May! It wasn't on the list to be in drydock.

We sailed Radiance this past June (3 months ago) and didn't notice anything in dire need of repair. I have been on other ships with more noticeable needs. We loved the Radiance!!! We didn't go around looking at the tiny details or to see what condition the ship was in. Just happened to notice them so thought I'd comment. We, too, loved the ship but in all our cruises this is the first time we've noticed anything in need of repair.
Fran Harp Posted August 30, 2006 #10 Share Posted August 30, 2006 Asked this on another thread but will ask here too - in case different people answer. What happens to crew and staff while ship is in drydock? Captain, engineers et al? Fran in Toronto
Terpnut Posted August 30, 2006 #11 Share Posted August 30, 2006 I noticed a few things here and there but overall Radiance looks very good cosmetically! What she really needs is for someone to fix the public toilets-the rest rooms near the Windjammer and a couple other places were out of service almost half the time because they wouldn't flush. What happens to crew and staff while ship is in drydock? Captain, engineers et al? Fran in Toronto Since a routine drydock is only a week or two at most, they probably stay with the ship. All they do in routine drydocks is clean and paint the hull below the waterline, the furniture and bedding, and other stuff like that, they do waterborne, drydock costs lots of money and they don't need a drydock to do most of what folks ask about on this board. Ula Posted August 30, 2006 #13 Share Posted August 30, 2006 Terpnut, Not only the toilets near the Windjammer. The cabins on deck 10 lost plumbing every morning at around the same time. Did not ruin the vacation, just one of those things. Happened to us and my parents who were down the hall.
robert3556 Posted August 30, 2006 #14 Share Posted August 30, 2006 During a routine drydock period most of the crew stays onboard cleaning and helping in any way they can. Cruise Director and entertainers leave and comeback just few days before vessel is ready to sail (at least that’s what happens in the USA). A normal drydocking is for cleaning of marine growth on the vessel’s hull this allows Port Engineer to examine the hull for damage & the condition of the paint (Some of new paints that are used just need growth removed), if paint is damaged it are repaired, sea valves are checked and repaired. Preventive maintenance is done on fin stabilizers, thrusters, anchor windlasses and propellers. Contractors and crew work on areas of ship that would interfere with passengers during their cruise. I guess they are having continuing toilet/plumbing problems around decks 10 and 11.
pk&Di Posted August 31, 2006 #16 Share Posted August 31, 2006 Hi All, My wife and are considering booking an 8 day on radiance for the eastern Caribbean. But it sounds like she might be in real need of maintenance etc. We are not thinking of going until next November. We have been on Serenade (alaska 06/25/06) and I would hate to be disappointed going on Radiance. Should we try the voyager class instead? Any input would be appreciated. P. Ula Posted August 31, 2006 #17 Share Posted August 31, 2006 pk&Di, Book her, she really is a beautiful ship and easy to get around on. The plumbing problems were just an annoyance. Once fixed they can flush them from outside the room. And that problem may be fixed by the time you cruise. Just a word of advice on that. If your toilet does not flush do not continue to push the button it just fills with water. You could flood your bathroom. Some did, we did not, but that water level rising and nothing going out we just called the experts.
Fran Harp Posted September 1, 2006 #18 Share Posted September 1, 2006 Thanks all for your answers re: drydock. It just suddenly occurred to me, on a ship with 800 and some crew - do they all stay on board, or get a few days to kick back. Obviously some would have to. Fran in Toronto

We have been on Serenade (alaska 06/25/06) and I would hate to be disappointed going on Radiance. Should we try the voyager class instead? Any input would be appreciated. P. As you already know from my earlier posts, we experienced some toilet problems when we sailed on her three weeks ago. The fact that they had to close a public restroom here and there was inconvenient (we didn't have any problems in our staterooms), but we would just have to occasionally run up or down a deck to find a working toilet. However, as you can see from my sig, none of this prevented us from booking a 6-day W. Caribbean cruise on her in November. And there is no dry dock planned in between. Radiance had a few problems but they did not prevent us from enjoying our cruise and we are confident enough in her to book her again (and because we liked her much better than Voyager-class)! :)

cruzingduo Posted September 1, 2006 Author #21 Share Posted September 1, 2006 Thanks for all the replies. We are on the Radiance for a b2b in March 2007, and June 2007 and September 2007 to Alaska. Sounds like we'll have the new bedding. Yea! We are on deck 10 all 4 trips. What cabins were you in that had bathroom problems?

truffles2 Posted September 1, 2006 #23 Share Posted September 1, 2006 We like Radiance class better because it is classier, lots of glass, less passengers...therefore a bit less congestion, easier to get around, etc. Very hard to navigate some lower floors because of the ice skating rink, etc.:o
Ula Posted September 1, 2006 #24 Share Posted September 1, 2006 Cruzingduo, First congrats on those great trips you have booked. We were in JS 1540 and my parents were in a suite 1556. Beautiful cabins. You probably will not have any problems at all, they seemed to occur around the same time every morning. My parents who stay in their cabin later had it happen every day. Us, since we were out earlier only noticed the problem on the days we were back in the cabin around 8:30.
