Nail Polish

I do my own nails ... and did a test this past week ... seeing if I could keep my manicure looking A+ for an entire week.

I'm on day 5 and I think the nail polish is looking tired.

Is nail polish considered a liquid?

If so, has anyone ever put nail polish in their checked baggage?

I've always put mine in my carry-on, as I wasn't sure what would happen to the polish in the extreme temps in the belly of the plane.

I once had a nail polish explode in my purse when it was left in a hot car. :o Not a fun thing to try and clean up at all.

Or ... do you have a trick for keeping your nails looking tops for a week?

Thanks and HUGz! Jules

I don't wear a dark color. Although sometimes by the end of the week it is starting to chip a bit, I'm the only one who would know it. I wear one of the bridal colors by OPI, they are all just a hint of pink, peach or beige.

Instead of packing polish, put an extra coat of clear on the night before you leave. And don't forget, you won't be doing housework or dishes so your polish may last longer.

Can you test that theory out at home? No housework, dishes, laundry or cooking for a whole week :) !

Edit to add, my former manicurist packed her nail polish into her checked bag and yes, it did open from the pressure (or lack of it ??) She did have it in a ziplock, so it wasn't all over everything, but she said she had to toss it.

Hate to be the one to break the sad news but nail polish is a liquid. My only suggestion would be . . . . 1) pack your polish in a heavy duty plastic bag (they sell them at any luggage store . . . much more sturdy than your regular zip lock type bag) . . . or 2) treat yourself to a really nice manicure at the Spa on your ship.

I get my nails professionally done every other week (but then I have gel nails) and they last for at least two weeks (sometimes even longer).

I wear acrylic fingernails and I always take along whatever color I am wearing during the period of time of the cruise .. in case I need a repair or a re-polish.

I pack all the toiletries in zip lock bags inside a small vinyl lined tote that zips and I check it at the airport. If there is a spill.. clean ups are easy and no clothing affected. I have never seen the nail polish or top coat spill or break .. ever.

I am one of those who wants to climb on board the cabin with everything that is possible to check checked and only what I REALLY need and usually my laptop... with me in the cabin.

Hmmmm .... wonder if they sell nail polish on board?

Don't know if your ship will sell nail polish onboard, but you could always look for it in a shop in one of your port calls. Pack a few of the polish remover wipes, buy a color in port & toss it before you come home. I know it's not the best option, but it's only a couple of $$.

I think I might just put this idea in my own notes for January. :) (Oh wait, we're not flying)

BTW, LOVE your screen name.

Thanks for all the input gang! :D

Actually, I remembered that we're there the night before, and I could buy it then.

But ... we like the acrylic products ... ie, Orly, OPI, etc., and not sure there's going to be a salon open at 8:30 p.m. when I get in that night.

I always pack my nail polish in my checked luggage and have never had any issues.

I was in Target the other day and noticed they now carry OPI or Orly. I do not remember which brand it was as I was in a hurry. I just remember having that I didn't realize they sold that here thought.

Or ... do you have a trick for keeping your nails looking tops for a week?

(I know I have posted this before so those of you who have already seen this... ignore.)

I used to get my nails done (Gel) from a salon.... no longer. What I truly missed was the longevity of the manicure/polish and the shine... nothing else ever came close.

I do my own nails now, have for some time, and recently found a product that I swear by!!!

Everyone that has tried it that I know loves it as well.

If you apply as a top coat and then every couple of days over your nail color, I can keep my manicure perfect for weeks.

The shine factor is mirror perfect, I can actually see my face in it days later!

(Mind you... I am a stay at home mom to three & new puppy, gardener, clean freak& overall active person );) I am very hard on my nails!

Here it is below pictured and the link to the description.

I can find this at any Walgreens and Target by me, cost is approx $6.

Sally Hansen Mega Shine:D

I would NOT steer you wrong, I promise!!!

BTW, my nail color is usually from ULTA or OPI.

Loved the nail polish I bought in Cozumel a couple years ago. Went on clear but when you walked out in the sun, it turned pink or red or mauve or whatever color the lid was. Then as soon as you went back inside, it went back to clear. Think the name of the place was Del Sol. Bought it for my co workers and they really got a kick out of it.

Don't dogs and cats fly alongside the checked bags? How bad can the pressure be? I am shocked that it would open itself unless it wasn't closed properly, but stranger things have happened, I guess. I always check my nailpolish, but I put all my liquids into not one, but two zippy bags when I travel - just in case.

I've had nail polish in my checked baggage and had no trouble. Just to be sure, put it in a ziploc baggie. My last cruise was a 10 day and I freshened my polish up once and my manicure looked great the whole trip. My current fav is made by Sally Hansen called "diamond strength" no chip. This polish actually grows out before it chips. It will definitely get me through a 10 day cruise.

You beat me to it desperatehousewife! I was going to suggest the Mega Shine, as well. It is amazing what it does for the life of your manicure.

Unfortunately, I've developed a reaction/allergy to nail polish remover, so I don't use it now. Miss those pretty cruise fingernails :( !
