joezapp Posted September 2, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 2, 2006 Went on the Carnival Destiny for my honeymoon. Nice ship and nice ports. Supposedly 82 honeymooners on the ship. Cruise Critic indicates that Carnival will give honeymooners a cake at dinner on the first night. NO SUCH THING! We could have had a cake for a $7 charge, that's it! We're doing the ship again, since it's a great value for what you get. But the Destiny is far from "romantic". Much better options for a honeymoon out there... Changes_In_Lattitudes Posted September 2, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 2, 2006 We were on the Miracle and were seated with another couple of honeymooners. On the 5th day of a 7 day cruise they came by and sang the happy honeymooners song and gave us each a slice of cake. The Maitre'd must have known about the event through the OPC for myself, which I was a member of and had contacted them ahead of time to let them know I was coming (the OPC also decorated our room with "congratulations" streamers and left a nice fruit/cheese basket). I'm assuming if the Maitre'd knows then they'll do something. But it wasn't that big of a deal. It was just some corny singing (which we did appreciate) and another slice of dessert (which my waistline could've said no to).
ILuvCarnival Posted September 2, 2006 #3 Share Posted September 2, 2006 This is a topic that really frustrates me. I own a travel agency that ONLY sells honeymoon cruises on Carnival. They stopped doing anything for occasions (honeymoons, birthdays, anniversarys, etc) about a year ago. We have protested, but they don't seem seem to care. joezapp Posted September 2, 2006 Author #4 Share Posted September 2, 2006 Thanks for the input. I got the same impression. Seems they are not too concerned with satisfying the romantic crowd anymore. With all the bright lights and noise, seems they want to cater to a large party crowd and the heck with the honeymooners and romantics. Of course, as another poster implied, it might be different on another Carnival ship. The Miracle IS one of Cruise Critics' romantic choices. nmcrzer Posted September 2, 2006 #5 Share Posted September 2, 2006 We are honeyooning on the Conquest in October. The PVP told me there really aren't any honeymoon perks. But, I am going to bring my own decorations for the room and door. We have a balcony room, so I am going to get those plastic window clings that say "Just Married", and I will probably put some wedding bells on the door. joezapp- Congratulations on your wedding!!! Cotton Posted September 2, 2006 #6 Share Posted September 2, 2006 ......Cruise Critic indicates that Carnival will give honeymooners a cake at dinner on the first night..... Where did you see that on Cruise Critic? Carnival stopped giving away the cakes for occasions quite awhile ago. Most people are aware of that, and I haven't seen it mentioned in a long, long time. I think that so many folks said it was their birthday, anniversay, whatever - that they finally had to stop giving and start charging. It was quite disruptive in the dining room every evening with so many songs being sung to so many guests....hardly a nice, quiet dining atmosphere. I for one am glad they stopped it. If you order a cake for any occasion, they will still sing to you, but it surely is nice not to have to hear it every 10 minutes during dinner. Changes_In_Lattitudes Posted September 2, 2006 #7 Share Posted September 2, 2006 I agree with you on the song part. Once or twice was kinda fun, but by the time they sang to us on the 5th night (and this was just 2 weeks ago), we had heard the song probably a dozen times. ILuvCarnival Posted September 3, 2006 #8 Share Posted September 3, 2006 Uunfortunitely, it is fleet wide... No more free cakes. I do agree about the singing, but they could afford to do the cakes. I know, for our customers, since one half of our business is Honeymoons on Carnival (The other is large groups on Carnival), we purchase a honeymoon gift for all of our celebrating couples... This is 100% up to yout travel agent as they have to purchase it out of their comission.

If you order a cake for any occasion, they will still sing to you, but it surely is nice not to have to hear it every 10 minutes during dinner.[ /quote] Under "Romance Cruises>Honeymoons at Sea: "Carnival Cruise Lines - Carnival gives all newlyweds a wedding cake at dinner on their first night. (You were too busy at the wedding to enjoy yours anyway, right?) Plus, for $35 you can arrange for the line to decorate your room with "Congratulations" banners, Mylar balloons, and a cake. (Though, like we said, you'll get the cake anyway.) For $45 you can pre-order a dozen red roses, so that they're waiting in your cabin when you arrive. And, for $75, you'll get the "High Seas Honeymoon" package, which includes T-shirts, visors, a camera, coupons for drinks and an onboard portrait, and a bottle of Korbel champagne with flutes." Makes no mention of the singing of songs. I agree, that would have been a bit much. But the cake would have been a nice touch. Carnival did absolutely nothing to acknowledge the honeymoon, besides CD Skip Lyons announcing, "If the ship seems to be swaying more than usual, it is probably directly attributable to the 82 honeymoon couples on board this trip". They're proud enough about it to make that announcement; even a little surprise back at the cabin in place of the "towel animal" is all it would take to add the nice touch that I sort of expected. He will still be there, but not sure if he still does it.;) This is wonderful! I think this should be customary. I believe that since cruises are still popular for honeymooners, and since travel agents such as "ILuvCarnival" send all thier honeymooners on Carnival, cruise ships such as Carnival SHOULD still be catering to honeymooners in some fashion. kstwo728 Posted September 3, 2006 #18 Share Posted September 3, 2006 we HMed on the Pride 7/30. didn't want or need any acknowledgements from Carnival. I'm sure people took advantage of the "free" stuff by always telling Carnival they are having a b-day, anniversary, etc. Can't blame them for stopping it. My loving hubby was thoughtful enough to get 2 special gifts from the website and they were delivered to our cabin on 1st and 4th days. We shared our HM wine with our tablemates in celebration of our marriage and they shared theirs in celebration of his b-day. Enjoy your HM for the time it is!! A celebration of your wedding! And I hope we can be like above poster in 6 years....cruising and reliving our HM!

Brenda, I've had one b'day on a cruise, but I made sure NOBODY knew about it. Well, actually the cabin steward did because flowers from my kids were delivered that day. BirthdayGirl30 Posted September 3, 2006 #20 Share Posted September 3, 2006 I'm going to be celebrating my 30th birthday on the ship. The REASON I'm going is so that no one on land has a chance to mention it at all. Told my husband I'm not interested in any songs or $7 cakes. Only jewelry and a day at the spa. joezapp Posted September 4, 2006 Author #23 Share Posted September 4, 2006 Geez, I can't think of anything more romantic than a cruise -- honeymoon perks or not. I see that the Destiny was not one of the cruises you went on. Seriously, there was nothing romantic about this cruise. Now I did go on the Mardi Gras in 1988. That boat DID have more of a romantic feel to it. Couples were out on the dark deck under the stars doing what romantic couples do. But the Destiny with it's bright lights, loud party music and salsa on the deck, teens sneaking puffs away from their parents on the upper decks, and hip-hop in the club...not a thing romantic about it. But hey, lots of families and lots of singles were on the ship, too...not just couples. Again, I'm not trashing the Destiny. We ARE doing it again in March. Great itinerary, good food, decent entertainment, great value. Beginning in January, 5 ports in 5 consecutive days! 6 ports if you count San Juan! But honeymooners should rule this one out. Many posters here were pretty well satisfied with the romantic atmosphere on the ships they went on. I would trust their opinion and go on one of those ships instead. Is there anything more romantic than a cruise? We were at Sandals Antigua the week prior to the cruise. Sandals=Romance. Resorts in the Pocono Mountains of Pa. are incredibly romantic as well.
