cruisehappygal Posted September 2, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 2, 2006 Hi.. we are new to the Holland America Boards, having sailed on Celebrity for the past 4 years.and have been very happy, but we wanted to try something new and have heard good things about HA. We now have a VD Guarantee booked on the Westerdam for January 28, 07. My question is about the rooms as well as the balcony. Do the VD and above all have tubs, or do some just have showers. Also and most important, they talk about the furnishings on the balconys as a pedistal table and chairs... Is this just a small table in between the chairs, or it is high so that you can sit around it and have breakfast. We love to have our coffee on the balcony, but on Celebrity only the suites have the higher tables. I would love to see a photo if anyone has one, but would be very happy with an answer. We are excited about trying Holland America for the first time, and this board has been very helpful. One more thing.... what is the "Yum Yum Man" Thanks for your help Jacqueline
lb0103 Posted September 2, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 2, 2006 We were on the Westerdam two years ago to the Baltics. We had a VD, I think, and the table was little and short. There was not a lot of room out there but it was nice to be there while one of us was in the shower. We had a tub, most are I think, but they says there are some showers. We have only been on one Celebity cruise last year to Mex Riv on the Mercury and it was the best service of any cruise line we have sailed. Now that I have said that I will be flamed as this is the HAL board. We have sailed Princess, Carnival, and many RCCL and we are booked on the Zuiederdam, sister to W, in Oct 06 in a VF. It will be our third HAL cruise. We have enjoyed every cruise we have been on but the worst service we ever had was the Maasdam about 5 years ago. The cruise was great the ship was fine, the service was not. He weren't sure if we should try HAL again, but we liked the itinery of the Westerdam the best for what we were doing. We were not sorry, the service was great. You will fine many people on this board that are passionate about HAL. They ALL give wonderful advise about how HAL does things. Everyone has different priorties so a lot of things I read in here make me chuckle. We chose the cruise line by the destination we want next. After last year on the Mercury we looked for a X ship going when we want, where we want, but there were none. HAL had what we wanted and I am sure we will have a wonderful time. The yum-yum man is the guy outside the dining room after dinner. I'm sure that our more experienced HAL posters will give you a more detailed description. One more thing.... what is the "Yum Yum Man" Thanks for your help Jacqueline i was on the westerdam in may and had a vd cabin. ours only had a walking shower because we had a handicapped room. we had friends traveling in the cabin next to us (vd) and they had a shower/tub. our balcony had two chairs and a small round table. the table was only good for setting a drink on. the glass top table in the room is bigger and raises to full table height. we used that for room service and it worked great. yum yum man gives away treats at the end of meals and calls you into the dinning room before dinner. sometimes he will also play a trick on you when you go to get your after dinner mints/ginger/figs. Waxer Posted September 3, 2006 #5 Share Posted September 3, 2006 The table on the balcony is down at "seat level" but it should be possible to move the oval table inside the cabin to the balcony if you want to eat out there - it is height-adjustable. cruisehappygal Posted September 4, 2006 Author #6 Share Posted September 4, 2006 Thanks so much for all the help on this question. The picture of the high table looks wonderful, but I wonder if it was only on the AFT cabins, or VA category. I think we will try to move the table from inside if that is possible, as we love to eat on the balcony in the morning. The Yum Yum man sounds like fun.... Any other secrets you can share about Holland America for a newbie to the line.....???? Thanks again for taking the time to send the picture and to answer my questions. I love reading these boards, and we are counting the days till we can experience the beauty of the Westerdam. Jacqueline:D
