swtpnk Posted September 3, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 3, 2006 I havent seen this on any other posts, so here goes... when the sun sets around 6 pm, just how "dark" will it be?? I dont know which season the nights are lighter than other seasons.. we sail sept 16th, and i not sure if we should do the whale watch. 3:30-6:pm would it be too dark to go to Mendenhall glacier after that?? since our ship doesnt leave till 10 pm?? sure would love to get both of em in there if we could!! i may be asking too much huh?? thank you for any info... these message boards are wonderful... THANKS!!! diane
MilliesMom Posted September 4, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 4, 2006 If the ship you will be on has a bridge cam, check it the day they will be in each port and the time you plan on an excursion. I was amazed how light it stayed whereas here (southern US) it is now dark by 8 pm.
Djaye Posted September 4, 2006 #3 Share Posted September 4, 2006 Go to www.sunrisesunset.com and you can get a calendar for the exact dates and places you will be. It will not only give you the sunset time, but the time it actually gets dark - and also the moon phases. We recently returned from AK - you are going to love it! THANKS!!! diane Diane, When we were in Juneau in May, Mendenhall Glacier closed at 6pm. At least that is what we were told. Maybe you could go to Mendenhall before the Whale watch? swtpnk Posted September 4, 2006 Author #6 Share Posted September 4, 2006 Thank You jrmende, i think i made up my mind... i think i will do what i originally planned, and not do the whale watch. we can go to seaworld, 1 1/2 hrs away, and see whales. not in their own environment of course, but i will see other things i cant see here... thank you so very much... diane :):D
Budget Queen Posted September 4, 2006 #7 Share Posted September 4, 2006 It will be dark at 7pm in your timeframe. Too late for Mendenhall after a whale watch in my opinion, verify shuttle availablity. As for "Sea World", no comparism and your sightings are humpbacks not likely orcas out of Juneau. Certainly there is plenty to do out of Juneau. Mendenhall is a so so glacier in the glacier scale of things in my opinion. Do what is a priority for you and have a great time- DRESS warm and take approprite attire if you plan on any viewing from deck.

We loved the whole experience! It's NOT at all the same as seeing SeaWorld. Just the beauty of the tour is fun.

Cruisechick82 Posted September 4, 2006 #10 Share Posted September 4, 2006 We just got back from our cruise and while Mendenhall was nice to look at, it wasn't very impressive. If you are going to another glacier or Glacier Bay if you are sailing on the Star, I don't think you will miss much if you have to skip Mendenhall to do a whale watch. We didn't go whale watching as it wasn't in our budget or a priority to us, but we did get lucky and we sailed up to a pod of orcas on our way back to Vancouver. The captain stopped the ship and we just watched the whales, they were everywhere. It was pretty amazing, so I would recommend the whale watch if of interest. Djaye Posted September 5, 2006 #11 Share Posted September 5, 2006 I agree - the whale watch is not to be missed. Sounds like you might be with Capt Larry??? We did his 3:30 and it was almost 7:00 by the time we got back to the ship when all was said and done.
