Rare Coral Posted September 4, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 4, 2006 If I was to make a very "un-educated guess" - I would guess that you will see wireless in more areas before you see internet ports in the rooms. Just because it is less-expensive to retrofit with wireless then change the wiring in the rooms.

Pam in CA Posted September 4, 2006 #5 Share Posted September 4, 2006 I don't see the huge need for wireless or internet in the cabins. After all, relatively few passengers bring their laptops. I have no problem going to the internet cafe if I want to do email.
RetireeWannabee Posted September 4, 2006 #6 Share Posted September 4, 2006 Yeah, what she said: I typically take a vacation to get away from the computer and would never bring a laptop on a cruise. I definitely don't want my cruise fare to jump to add internet to the cabins. It's unlikely we'll even go to the internet cafe next week. I'm more interested in using my time exploring ports and ship offerings than sitting at a computer. Of course, everyone has their own priorities. Unfortunately not all of us can stay out of touch from home when we go on vacation - or else we would not be able to go on vacation. I have 2 choices - I can either not go on vacation or go on vacation and stay in touch with home. I would love to be able to break ties for a week with what is happening back home but when you have a relative who is sick - staying connected back home is a necessity. Thus, the internet is a necessity for some of us.

I don't understand why when someone asks about internet access on ships someone decides not to answer the question asked but to rant against using the internet on vacation. Why do they think they know better than the person who asked about internet access whether that person needs or should use internet access onboard? lwnbwlr Posted September 4, 2006 #10 Share Posted September 4, 2006 Princess will make wireless available throughout the ship either when the internet cafe ceases being a profit center or cruiser's raise enough hell about it.

Why do they think they know better than the person who asked about internet access whether that person needs or should use internet access onboard? I most certainly did not rant, nor determine whether or not the op should use the internet, but I don't understand why the wireless already available and the internet cafe is not enuf? It's a cruise ship, not a business hotel. You also don't seem to know the answer to the original question and basically dropped in to rant against me. How is that better? rkdahl Posted September 4, 2006 #12 Share Posted September 4, 2006 I'd like to see wireless or ethernet in the cabins as well! Some folks here associate bringing a laptop with 'work' and staying in touch with the office. I take my laptop to store my digital pictures, access the latest weather and flight info, read up on news and world events relating to our trip, do research on ports of call and keep in touch with family and friends. To me it's not an anchor or a business/vacation issue, it's just another tool I choose to use to enjoy my activities. The internet cafe fills part of that void, but it can't do everything I need to due to the ships network security. Having my own access from my laptop in my cabin would be great and I'd like that very much! ;)

Pam in CA Posted September 5, 2006 #18 Share Posted September 5, 2006 Also need to keep in touch with Family & the DW needs to send a World Travel Log.;) There's always the Internet cafe and the wireless already available. I'm not against wireless in the cabins but rather I don't think this is a priority since most passengers won't use it as most passengers don't bring their laptops. As always, it's a business decision -- I don't see them providing a service at great expense that only few would use anytime soon.

As always, it's a business decision -- I don't see them providing a service at great expense that only few would use anytime soon. Then again, perhaps most passengers don't bring their laptops because wireless is not available in the cabins. It's pretty much a circular argument and doesn't end up proving anything. If that argument had been successful several years ago, we might not have any internet service on ships. The companies that are most successful are those which can look into the future and see what services will be in demand then, rather than be satisfied only to meet the immediate needs of their customers. KLLund Posted September 5, 2006 #20 Share Posted September 5, 2006 We build a website of the cruise on sea days .. and we keep in touch with work and family ... I agree that it would be so much nicer to do it on the balcony than to have to go to one of the public areas .. dragging all the "stuff" ... I actually think I would be willing to pay more for that. septrack Posted September 5, 2006 #22 Share Posted September 5, 2006 when it was a new ship for a 10 day trip. They then offered unlimited internet in the cabin for $100. I still have great memories of sending digital photos of St Thomas harbor, IM'ing friends and following the market from our balcony. Celebrity stopped the unlimited usuage option and it is too expensiver for me with their .75/min and other packages. Using my own laptop was great though and someday broadband on ships will arrive at affordable prices. Mark

turbo46032 Posted September 5, 2006 #24 Share Posted September 5, 2006 Don't forget that the technology is not there yet, at least in a financially feasible manner. I would think you'll see wired ports in rooms well before you see wireless, since wireless still needs lots of wires back to the box, and likely does not work as well because of all the metal. I heard one company pulled airline flight internet access due to very low demand.
Guest LetMeGo Posted September 5, 2006 #25 Share Posted September 5, 2006 I think the key in here is the reliability of the technology in the shipboard circumstances... Even the walkie-talkies used on board a ship require a heliax(?)-cable to be installed through every single corridor to act as an additional transmitter. Otherwise there would be no chance of using them because of the bulkheads. Similarily wireless internet would require a few dozen receivers on every single deck to work even at an acceptable level. It's not that big of an investment, but as long as it isn't necessary... ;) Standard ethernet cabling isn't really an option on the ships where space is at premium. There are typically only a few telecommunication rooms on board a large cruiser, and besides the required space there is also a limit on how long the cabling can be (I think around a hundred yards). If it makes you feel any better, at least the more important crew members have an internet access in their own cabin. :D
