How will this affect Celebrity?

I was just reading that RCI has acquired Pullmantur cruiselines. http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=1772

Seeeing they own the two R ships, one can only hope they transfer those two ship to X as they pull Zenith from service. Or should I say transfer Zenith to Pullmantur.

I will be curious to see what changes will be announced once the deal is completed.

I was looking at Pullmantur's fleet and here's what we have

Oceanic - Built 1965 - Former Big Red Boat I

Blue Dream and Blue Star - Built 2000- Formerly R5 & R6

Holiday Star - Formerly Superstar Aries and Europa, conflicting info on build dates 1982 & 1995

Sky Wonder - Built 1984 - Fromerly Pacific Sky and Sky Princess

The only ships I could see transfering would be the R ships, let's hope.

Looks like a 5 ship fleet

SS Oceanic - 39,000 tons - 1,136 pax - I think this is the old love boat.

Blue Moon - 30,000 tons - 718 pax - built 2000.

Blue Dream - 30,000 tons - 700 pax - built 2000.

Sky Wonder - 47,000 tons - 1,550 pax - built 84.

Holiday Dream - Under Construction - but look to be in the 40,000 ton class.

Operationally I'm not sure how this will effect RCL but I do know that RCL stock shot up 3 dollars the day of this announcement.:D

Royal Caribbean Cruises shares rose 8% after the company agreed to acquire Pullmantur SA, Spain's largest cruise operator, for 430 million euros.

Thinking it over on how to Market it...

They would keep it as is and use the newer ships.

I don't think they will rebrand this fleet.

But get them more mid sized ships for reaching into the Greek Isles.

What line did catch my eye was the one where they had to pull out of Cuba.

Another lessenning of income into the island.

And with the way things are in the Caribbean an outside line may have a rough go of it trying to go into the Cuban market - pier's - and try to get a lucrative American passanger - whth their travel restrictions.

Hi Rick !

My feeling is at least 1 of the R Class ships MAY become part of the Celebrity fleet. The first ship would probably be swapped for Zenith. There may be a slim chance of Celebrity getting both R Class ships in exchange for Zenith.

This would give Celebrity some excitement, and options for some new itineraries until the Solstice class ships come online.

Of course, there is always the chance that RCI leaves things as they are with Pullmantur, but I think they have other ideas. Time will tell.

I would imagine that the Zenith will go to UK-based Island Cruises (another line in the RCL conglomerate), to join her sister ship Horizon (which now operates under the name Island Star).

Unfortunately, the Oceanic will probably be pulled from service altogether--sooner rather than later. She is a steamship, and extremely expensive to operate. I recall seeing her docked on the West Side of Manhattan in the late 1960s & 1970s, & I vaguely recall going aboard her to see a friend off (in those wonderful days when one could do such a thing!). She looked rather modern at the time, but with the passage of time she has developed into a classic cruise ship.

Longboysfan: No, Oceanic was not TV's "Love Boat." That role was played in most episodes by the Pacific Princess (& also, according to Wikipedia, in some episodes by the Island Princess, Royal Princess, Stella Solaris, Pearl of Scandinavia, and Royal Viking Sky).

I suppose the question for those who enjoy sailing to Bermuda on the Zenith is, after she leaves the Celebrity fleet, who will take her place? I would like to think that Celebrity will still operate a ship that is small enough to dock in St. George, but I'm afraid that won't be the case. The trend is toward ever-larger ships that can only dock at King's Wharf.

I sailed the Oceanic in the early 70's when she belonged to Home Lines, a wonderful experience.

I've also sailed on a couple of the Renaissance ships and think they are great. It would be wonderful to sail one from the east coast to Bermuda to replace the Zenith and Horizon ... but I don't think that will happen ... too few passengers.

Maybe they could do it as a real upscale cruise and charge big (even bigger bucks than they charge for Bermuda today) for a high end cruise.

The first three episodes of The Love Boat were filmed aboard the Sun Princess which later became the S/S Majestic, a Premier Cruise Lines fleetmate of the S/S Oceanic.

I would count the Oceanic among the great liners, right up there with the Norway and the QE2. I haven't been aboard her in more than fifteen years though, so it's certainly possible that she's a little long of tooth now.

Our first cruise was 14 nights on her (baby) sister ship, the Homeric. She only carried about 600 passengers and is still my favorite ship. We were treated like royalty! Sorry we never got to the much bigger Oceanic; sometimes life just gets in the way..........

When I was in Freeport a few years back - the old Oceanic was at the pier - ties up next to the Rotterdam. They were going to be scrapped.

This was the old Home lines ship that was sold to be one of the first Big Red Boats.
