Detour to Hope and/or Soldotna?? BQ, Chenega, Yukon, Glacier Lady?

Recommended Posts

We will be doing an 8-day pre-cruise independent land tour next June (I know, still lots of time but I'm enjoying the planning!). After our 2 days in Seward, we will be driving up to Girdwood to splurge on staying at Alyeska.

I see from my maps that Hope is about 70 miles from Seward and Soldotna is 93 miles. Then from Hope to Girdwood is about 50 miles.

My question is, is it worth it to take a drive to Hope and/or Soldotna for just a few hours? What is there to see and do there? Or should we just drive up to Girdwood and enjoy the tram and resort?

Hope is an old mining town but not much to see. Soldotna is a major fishing area but not sure there's much of interest.

I'd consider the trip to Whittier for a 4-6 hour tour of Prince William Sound. It's different from the Kenai Fjords tours with an emphasis on getting up close to some very active glaciers.

Whittier is about 15 miles from Girdwood so it's a pretty short drive once the tour is done.

I would not make the detour just to get to Soldotna, unless you need to get to the Harley shop? :) The reason to go in that direction is to get to Homer in my opinion. As for Hope, it is an interesting "town", but very poorly maintained road that is slow going.

I agree with Chenega- if of interest a glacier boat tour out of Whittier is the winner in this area.
