PaulfromPA Posted September 6, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 6, 2006 Hey JW: I recommend going to insuremytrip.com. You can select the kind of coverage you want and compare pricing from different companies. Whatever you do, I strongly suggest reading any policy before you buy it. Not all policies are the same. Also, I recommend knowing what your current health insurance covers (assuming you have some) for travel outside the U.S. If you have that coverage already, I would find out exactly how it works in case you need it. Personally, I buy my own travel insurance, and do so within 7 days of putting down a deposit on a cruise. Usually if you buy within 7 days there is an automatic waiver of any pre-existing condition exclusions that otherwise might be in force. (Some policies allow this within 15 days, but again, not all policies are alike, so you have to check.) I'm not so worried about any pre-existing condition per se, but at least with the waiver there can't be any question. I hope this helps... - Paul

BobbiOh Posted September 6, 2006 #4 Share Posted September 6, 2006 I bought my insurance through the cruise line(princess) and when we had to cancel we got a full refund within 2 weeks and I cancelled the day before we were scheduled to leave. Cruise line insurance only covers what was booked through the cruise line. So, if you've booked your own airfare, pre or post cruise hotel or any shore excursions on your own, it won't cover those. It also won't cover you if you miss the ship departure because airfare you booked on your own was delayed or cancelled. So, you need to look at how you've booked, as well as what your needs are. Good luck, Bobbi

CaribbeanBound Posted September 7, 2006 #6 Share Posted September 7, 2006 Ideally, you want your insurance to cover all of your transportation (car, air, cruise, taxi, etc), your luggage, medical expenses and emergency evacuation. JustCruisin' Posted September 10, 2006 #8 Share Posted September 10, 2006 We always buy cruise insurance (athough we never needed to use it) and have used InsureMyTrip to find the best one. Travel Guard and Access America are probably the two biggest companies out there. One big reason to get travel insurance is for the medical coverage. Medicare, for one, does not cover medical expenses incurred outside of the United States. Other insurances, such as mine, has a large deductable before the 100% coverage kicks in. It pays for people to check their own policy to find out the details. That may help one decide if travel/cruise insurance is right for them.
