For residents of Hawaii

I know a few of the regulars live in Hawaii. My wife brought up an interesting point while driving around the Islands. How do you have Interste Highways in Hawaii as it is just one state. It may sound like a foolish question but I have always thought an interstate was suppose to go from state to state. I'm sure this is a simple explaination. Any help?????

The "interstate" highways in Hawaii get federal funding because they connect military bases.

Yep--That's it! Before we moved here I thought the same thing...um, hello, there's no other state for this "interstate" to connect to! It's all about funding though. Otherwise they would have to be completely state funded.

I knew there must be a logical explaination. Didn't thinkn they were going to build an interstate to California, and got stopped in the middle.

Hawaii having a interstate highway always confuses me also. I guess it really is just for the federal funding and military. Just another things that makes Hawaii unique.
