Freeport City Tour

Recommended Posts

On this excursion you will:

Travel through both residential and industrial neighborhoods on your way to the downtown commercial district.

Shop in the quaint Port Lucaya marketplace, or stroll along the streets of Freeport at your leisure.

Transportation is provided, however if you choose to stay downtown longer, your return transportation will be at your own expense.

The cost of the tour is $35.00.

I was hoping someone went on this tour and could tell me specifics.

Thanks

$35! I'd say it's not worth it.

First of all, there is close to nothing that a tourist would be interested in in downtown Freeport. It's for the locals or people wanting to set up a foreign bank account at the numerous bank branches.

Second, you can take a shared taxi from the cruise port to the Port Lucaya Marketplace for $5 per person which is $10 roundtrip. That is the main tourist destination and it is filled with shops, restaurants, bars and straw markets. Across the street is the Our Lucaya Resort (Sheraton/Westin) where you can walk out onto the beach, view the pool complex and cool down in the lobby of either hotel.

Third, the taxi ride to Port Lucaya will take you through the same industrial area near the port and the same residential areas away from the port. The taxi ride is about 25-minutes each way. The taxi driver won't likely be pointing things out to you as a tour driver will, but you're not missing anything, in my opinion.

See my more detailed entry elsewhere here in the Bahamas section.

I'm not aware of any such day passes at Our Lucaya. But the complex is not locked tight; you can walk right through. I've heard of people who hang out on the beach behind the hotels (the beach is public) and a few have used the pool facilities while there without incident. Not that I'm recommending that. What I do recommend is that if you're going to hang out there, become a customer. Purchase drinks there, purchase food there, buy something at the logo store, etc.
