Chap Posted September 11, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 11, 2006 We recently returned from an Alaska cruise which was awesome! Now, I'm starting to plan ahead for Hawaii. I've seen cruises advertised for 14 days that leave from San Diego. It would save on flying time, but are the seas rough for that trip? Thanks! Splinter Posted September 11, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 11, 2006 I guess it depends on your definition of rough. Rare that they are so rough that everyone was sea sick, or that they had to drain and close the pools, but often rough enough that you need some "sea legs" to get around easily. The Pacific is a fickle lady...it can be rough in July or December....or smooth as glass the whole way. I would recommend the round trip from the mainland though. We have done it 3 times, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. 5 relaxing days over, 5 busy port days, then 5 relaxing days home. Since we live on the West Coast, this also means no flying at all for us, so we arrive home nicely rested. You can go on Princess or Celebrity out of LA on this route, or on HAL or Celebrity or RCI out of San Diego. We have done both. RCI makes you get off in Ensenada and bus to San Diego though, so avoid having to do that.
cruzn single Posted September 11, 2006 #3 Share Posted September 11, 2006 I would think that the definition of rough would mean days that the pool had to be drained, and we had 5 of those days on our cruise last November R/T from San Diego. It was very rough, but guess that would depend on the time of the year. We were on HAL (our 7th HAL cruise) and we would NEVER do a cruise that included that many uninterrupted sea days. And previously, we have loved sea days, but enjoy them more when it is broken up, and there are some shore days interspersed! Also, for us, it seemed there wasn't that much to do on the sea days! For this reason, we probably will NEVER again go on HAL
