can I carry my luggage on at check-in?

I have read the posts about taking the luggage off the ship instead of leaving it the night before in the hallway.

My question is: Instead of leaving it with the porters at the port, Can I just carry it on with me?

On our last cruise one of our bags was badly damaged. It was fine when I left it with the porters at the port, but when it arrived in our room it was damaged. Of course everyone said it wasn't their fault and to be honest it was a cheap suitcase. I had duct tape with me a taped it back together to get it back home.

I wasn't sure if the reason you might not be able to carry luggage on is due to the suitcases having to go through a security check.

Yes, you can carry on all your luggage. BUT: it has to fit through x-ray scanners just like at the airport (think carry on luggage size at the airport) so if it's too big to fit through the scanner they'll send you back to check it with the porters. Also, remember you could possibly be standing in long lines, not to mention going up escalators and lots of ramps, during which time if you have a lot of carry on luggage it can become a big hassle. Plus if you get there before 1pm your room may not be available (usually isn't) so you'll be stuck dealing with your luggage on the ship for a while until your room is ready.
