Size of Dawn Balconies

I have to stop reading reviews that give me info I don't like ! Just read that balconies on the Dawn are 40 inches wide and all you can fit is a short sun chair and a plastic chair ( the reason given for why they were small was because the ship was designed for Asia!!!). Now I am sure I saw pictures on the CruiseClues site which showed 2 fairly substantial nylon net sun chairs with room to spare on the balconies. We have # 9222 and 9226 (connecting) and were hoping by opening the partition we'd have a fairly good size balcony but 40 inches wide???:(

It was the Norwegian SPIRIT, not the Dawn, which was designed for the Asian market.

I was on the Spirit in August. I have not been on the Dawn yet.

The people on the ship who had been on both said that the balconies were smaller on the Spirit. The Spirit was formally the SuperStar Leo and was built for the Asian market.

They are 35 square feet. That would make them about 10ft wide by 42 " deep.

You're misinformed. The Norwegian Spirit has sailed in Asia as the Superstar Leo with it's sister ship Superstar Virgo, but both the Norwegain Star and Norwegian Dawn were initially ordered as the SuperStar Libra and SuperStar Scorpio. Which means they were initially designed for Asia too.

Norwegain Star's history at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian_Star

The vessel entered service at the end of 2001. She was originally intended to operate with Star Cruises under the name SuperStar Libra, but it was decided that the ship would be assigned to Norwegian Cruise Lines six months before it was delivered. The vessel was christened in a dual ceremony with another NCL vessel, Norwegian Sun.

Propulsion System and Electric Power Supply

Four diesel generators with a 14,700-KW output each are provided for power generation. The MAN B&W type 14V48/60 diesel engines can be operated both with diesel oil and heavy fuel oil. The generators (supplied by ABB) provide a voltage of 11,000 v. The ship is propelled by means of two azipods with an output of 20,000 KW (nearly 55,000 horsepower) each. Their 360 efficiency provides the vessel with outstanding manúuvring capabilities. The new propulsion system also ensures stable and quiet sea-keeping characteristics and an extremely low vibration level on board.

Norwegian Dawn's history at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian_Dawn

The vessel was ordered from shipbuilders Meyer-Werft, Papenburg (Germany), to be delivered in 2002 to Star Cruises. However, six months before the delivery of sister ship SuperStar Libra, it was decided by Star Cruises that Libra and Scorpio would enter service as part of the fleet operated by subsidiary company Norwegian Cruise Line. In 2002, SuperStar Scorpio was delivered, and began operation as Norwegian Dawn.

Norwegian Spirit's history at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian_Spirit

The vessel was constructed by Meyer Werft in Germany. Named SuperStar Leo in 1998, the vessel was the first of Star Cruises' Leo Class. She was first based in Hong Kong for almost five years.

In 2004, Norwegian Cruise Line (a subsidiary company owned by Star Cruises) was planning to launch Pride of America. However, just prior to completion, the vessel partially sank when a storm hit the Lloyd Werft shipyards. To meet the already booked cruises for Pride of America, SuperStar Leo was transferred to the NCL fleet, and after only two weeks of refits, emerged as Norwegian Spirit.

Electric Power Supply and Propulsion

For the electric power generation 4 diesel generator sets make MAN B&W, type 14 V 48/60 are installed, each developing an output of 14,700 kW at 514 rpm and driving a synchronous generator, make ABB. For the vessel¥s propulsion 2 electric motors, make ABB, each with an output of 20,000 kW (nearly 55,000 horsepower) are installed. These motors transmit their power via shaft lines to the fixed pitch propellers.

The SuperStar Libra (Norwegian Star) changed hands just six months prior to delivery, much too late to make major changes in its design. But, NCL had more time to make changes to the SuperStar Scorpio (Norwegain Dawn), and additional 12 months.

Note: Star delivered 10/31/2001, Dawn delivered 12/3/2002.

They have 2 nylon mesh chairs.......one that reclines slightly.....you can prop your feet on the outer rail of the bal. One small table. I would not say that there is a lot of room to spare but it is comfortable. You have to kinda walk sideways to get around. They are no smaller then most bal. on other cruise ships:)
