Cannes to Monte Carlo

Recommended Posts

Has anyone tendered into Cannes and taken the train or bus to Monte Carlo. Brilliance of the Sea (Oct.2)says it stops at Cannes, is this where others have tendered? We want to go on our own to Monte Carlo than Eze. Will this be to hard? I have read others going from Villefranche, which would be closer.

How long will you be stopped at Cannes? Remember at tender ports it takes a lot longer to get from the ship to shore even if you are lucky and get on one of the first set of ship's boats being used to transfer passengers to shore. Plus you have to make sure to time yourself so you make sure you get back before the last tender heads back to the ship.

We tendered to Monte Carlo in 2003 and then had a private driver who took us to the sites in the town followed by a trip to St Paul de Vence and stops in Cannes and Nice on the way back to the ship. It was unfortunately our least favorite stop on our med cruise that year but we can say we have been there.

We are stopping at Cannes on a transatlantic cruise this year from Rome to New Orleans and we are still trying to decide what we are going to do at this port stop so I will be interested to hear others opinion of your proposed railtrip. We are looking into going to Eze and/or Nice using either rail or bus public transportation so it will be interesting to see what answers you get.

Have a great next cruise.

We will arrive at 10:00 a.m.- then tender- leave port at 8:00. So was trying to not do to much. Only Monte Carlo and Eze. Planning on being back to the ship by 5 or 6. Want to take the train to Monte Carlo, which I think stops near Casino. Not sure how to find the train station in Cannes, or how long this would take.

Then take the bus to EZE, I don't think a train runs there. My map shows bus#112, 20 min., 1.30 euros. And I think I actually need a 2nd bus up to the village.

Then not sure how to get back to Cannes. Would love some help.

We were on the Liberty this summer. We tendered into Cannes, walked into town and found the train station (I believe it is the gare) and took the train to Monaco and then walked on to Monte Carlo. It was quite a walk but we enjoyed it. On the return, we stopped in Nice. I believe the train also stopped in Eze. It was quite easy. We had no problems at all.

The 112 bus goes directly from Monaco to Eze and no additional bus is needed. The only time you would need a 2nd bus is if you take the train to Eze sur Mer which stops below the main village. Then you would have to take a taxi, bus or walk. There is an excellent thread on the board somewhere describing exactly how to do all this. You might want to see if you can find it.

We did this last month from the Liberty. This is more like a trip report, but here is what we did. We had a map of Cannes copied from a guidebook. From the tender docks, it was a couple of blocks walk past all the yachts to the town hall and then another few blocks inland to get to the train station (SNCF Gare), 10-15 minute walk altogether. The trains to Monaco are frequent. Once in Monaco, exit to the back of the train to go out the lower entrance to town. When you exit the station, there is a tourist office. Get a map of town. We asked them where to get the bus to Eze and they pointed across the street. This was not the bus stop to Eze village, but the bus to Nice stopping at Eze Sur Mer, the same place as the train. We walked straight a couple of blocks to the ramp up to the castle and made it just in time for the 11:55 changing of the guard. We stopped by the cathedral and looked at the tombs for Princess Grace and Prince Albert. We knew from some of the above posted links that the next bus was at 1:20 and left from Place de La Cremaillere up the hill from the Casino. It looked to be a long way off. They did have city buses that could take you there, but we decided to go back into the train station and walk the opposite direction from where we first exited. This takes you up some escalators then to some elevators that will then bring you a few blocks away from the bus stop at about the same level (no more up or down). We walked straight down Boulevard Princess Charlotte and waited for the bus. There were free restrooms right there next to the bus stop (also some in the train station near the elevators). We paid on the bus and had a short ride to Eze. The next bus to Nice was in 2 hours. That was enough time to grab a snack and walk the town to the cactus garden at the top (this was worth paying for as it gives you the best views). We caught the bus to Nice, but when we got there, we weren't quite sure where the train station was. There was a bus to Cannes leaving right next to us, so we hopped on. I would not recommend doing this! While it was cheaper than the train, and more convenient, it was very slow, stopping at every little town. We arrived back in Cannes around 7pm. Just enough time to take a quick look at the beach next to the docks and catch the tender back to the boat.

So to answer your question, it is possible. The trains are very reliable and run frequently, just allow yourself enough time to get around Monte Carlo. It was a bit more spread out than I thought it would be.

One other option mentioned already that we did not do, is to take the bus down from Eze Village to Eze Sur Mer. Depending on the schedule of those buses, it is probably easier to pick up the train from there than to go back to Nice and find the train station. Also, you can walk down the hill from the town (about 45 minutes walk). There was a nice sloping trail going all the way down. We were to hot and tired to do this, but if you are so inclined, it looked pleasant.

Has anyone rented a car in Cannes and drove to Monaco, St Paul, and Eze for a day trip? We have on reserved and it seems the highways aren't too complicated by looking at the maps. It looks like a loop of about 50 mile radius. Any info would be helpful. Thanks
