Who is Bill W.?

I noticed in the Holiday Capers, there are several events for "Friends of Bill W." ... what is that all about?

It is gatherings for recovering alcoholics. Bill W (Wilson) was the co-founder of AA.

He is the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. Those meetings are held on the ships for those folks and it sounds alot better or politically correct to say Friends of Bill W rather than AA, NA, CA, etc....

When you see this is for AA Meetings. This guy started the 12 step recovery program.

Oh ... gotcha ... that is great that Carnival offers a service like that, especially when the temptation is all around.

You may also see FOD meetings (Friends of Dorothy ) on cruises too. These are informal gatherings for gay and lesbian passengers to meet and mingle.

 

In the 1950's, gays and lesbians developed a special admiration for Judy Garland, and made reference to her as Dorothy, from the Wizzard of Oz, as a way to make reference to being gay without raising suspicion.

 

Very simular to Friends Of Bill W.

I was just going to mention that one because I did see it on the Pride last week.

I went for years wondering about Bill W. Finally asked and found out. I felt like it was such a secret meeting...

 

Never heard of Friends of Dorothy, but now I know about that one too.
