slackmaster Posted September 20, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 20, 2006 Do you need a passport to cruise the caribbean or will a D/L surfice? I know the new law goes into affect in 2007, but was curious if we needed to take them for a Oct 2006 cruise. We are US citizens leaving out of Tampa Thanks for any input
bubbles1209 Posted September 20, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 20, 2006 All we needed on our Caribbean cruise in June was a driver's license, and certified birth certificate. You should be fine using these this October. I don't think passports are required until the first part of January 2007.:) But if you already have a passport, just use it:)

HawaiiIslandGirl Posted September 20, 2006 #4 Share Posted September 20, 2006 What's this about needing a driver's license AND a birth certificate??!! We're sailing on the PRIDE in October and thought we only needed a passport or driver's license for our cruise to the Mexican Riviera. What about documentation for children? We were told a birth certificate will suffice. I'm getting panicky (is that a word?) as I'm repsonsible for disseminating info to 22 people! HELP! cherylandtk Posted September 20, 2006 #5 Share Posted September 20, 2006 Children 15 and under need only a birth certificate (certified gov't issued version, not the hospital copy). All others need a legal picture ID ( DL usually) AND the certified BC. PLEASE go to Carnival's website, click on FAQ's and read all the pertinent information so your group of 22 will not be surprised with the rules and regs and possibly lose their money if boarding is denied. caribbean dreams Posted September 20, 2006 #6 Share Posted September 20, 2006 If you cruise before Jan 2007 all you will need to for adults is a birth certificate and state issued ID or divers license, or just your passport. For children all you will need is their birth certificate, or their passport, if only 1 parent is traveling you will also need a certified letter from the absent parent giving you permission to take them. You only need a driver's license & a birth certificate if you don't have a passport. If you have a passport, all you need to go with it is your driver's license. A certified birth certificate will suffice for the children. Now, if there is a child traveling with only 1 parent and not 2, you need a notarized/certified letter of permission from the absent parent, giving the parent the child is traveling with permission to take them with them. If both parents are traveling with the children you don't have to worry about that. Also, any children 16 and older need a photo i.d. Hope this helps. :) Now take a deep breath, and relax. :p Enjoy your cruise.:)

Wennfred Posted September 20, 2006 #9 Share Posted September 20, 2006 Why do you need the drivers license with the passport? Bill No, the lady at the Cruise Terminal in the Queen Mary in Long Beach said no, your passport is your ID, But yes you do need your ID card for entering some Shipyard ports like in Mexico. Anyways, without a Passport a Good Certified Birth Certificate with the SEAL is needed with your ID card or Drivers Lisence. When we checked in at the Queen Mary, I over heard the Carnival Rep tell the lady next to me that she had an Invalid Birth Certificate, it was not Certified. She still let her in because she didnt say anything else but continued to process her. Fred

Wennfred Posted September 20, 2006 #11 Share Posted September 20, 2006 what a passport isn't good enough to get back on the ship in Mexico? Bill Sure it is, but why take one off the ship? I rather loose a Drivers License then a Passport. Fred

Fred I'd love to leave it on the ship but if something happened and we were stranded I'd feel much better in a foreign land with a passport in my hand. I'd rather lose neither!;) Bill

I feel pretty good about Mexico, they pretty much don't mess with the Tourist. If they see a Gringo that lost their ID card on the way back they usually will let them by with the Sail & Sign card alone. I have seen this too. Some people make a copy of their Passport and leave it in their safe or take the copy with them. In my "Warning: S&S and ID Card Holder with Lanyard" thread, thats what happened, luckly this guys wife had an expired drivers license with her. gr81 Posted September 20, 2006 #14 Share Posted September 20, 2006 Just to add on the passport thing. Anyone that cruises OVER new years will need a passport upon return even tho they wont need one to get on the ship. Just something to keep in mind for anyone thinking of a New Years cruise. bubbles1209 Posted September 21, 2006 #15 Share Posted September 21, 2006 Why do you need the drivers license with the passport? Bill maybe I should have worded that differently. All you need is your passport, but I'm taking my driver's license also. I guess personally, I would take it into port, and not my passport. I would leave the passport on the ship in the safe ( but that's just me).

Anyone that cruises OVER new years will need a passport upon return even tho they wont need one to get on the ship. Just something to keep in mind for anyone thinking of a New Years cruise. Depends on when you get back. The current date is January 8, 2007, so if your cruise gets back before then, you don't need it. See http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.htmlOf course they may change the date again. Either way, I've already got my passport, it makes life so much easier.
