SimplyAddicted Posted September 21, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 21, 2006 Good morning, everyone! I am not asking to start a riot, so please be nice! I am one of those people who love to dress up and do it every chance I can get. One of my packing strategies is to bring several nice sundresses that I can wear during the day over my bathing suit, then dress them up more for the dinning room (with nice shoes, jewelery, etc.). But I found on Carnival, that this was a bit overdressed. Then, I get a more formal dress for formal night. Does anyone know if people dress up a little more on casual nights on RCI? Thanks! Havana Daydreamin Posted September 21, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 21, 2006 I normally wear "docker" type slacks and tropical prints for the dining room on casual nights. You will see some more dressed than that here and there and they don't really stand out. I think general rule of thumb might be business casual type of wear. Just my thoughts. TEXASMUNK Posted September 21, 2006 #3 Share Posted September 21, 2006 matches my wife's. Go for it. You will not be alone. On casual nights, there are still a ton of folks that "dress up" somewhere between formal and Carnival. Bon Voyage
cb at sea Posted September 21, 2006 #4 Share Posted September 21, 2006 On formal nights, we go all out! Evening gown for me, tux for hubby. 2nd formal night, hubby wears a suit and I usually do a sexy little cocktail dress. If you enjoy dressing up, go for it! You will not be out of place! Even on our "casual and smart casual" nights, most of the women were still dressed to the nines. Not gowns, or anything, but dressy "club" wear--sexy, well-put together--the look to turn heads, so to speak! Of course, the men did not go to these lengths! Mainly dockers and collared polo or button shirt.

caviargal Posted September 21, 2006 #6 Share Posted September 21, 2006 I am "smart casual" all nights but formal (when the long dresses come out) as that is what I prefer as well. Sundresses are not too dressy at all. Enjoy!
map1961 Posted September 21, 2006 #7 Share Posted September 21, 2006 Are capri type pants acceptable on casual nights or is that too casual? :) I purchased a few long casual skirts with cutesy sweater/shirts to match to wear most casual nights, but I also have a ton of capris from the summer and I was wondering if it was ok to wear to dinner. We are hoping to get the later dinner seating if that makes a difference.
Havana Daydreamin Posted September 21, 2006 #8 Share Posted September 21, 2006 My wife wears capri's often for the casual nights. No one has ever looked crossways at us for it. But she picks out nice ones though as you probably do.

lovrccl Posted September 21, 2006 #10 Share Posted September 21, 2006 We always dress smartly no matter where we go, cruising or otherwise. You will look fine. It's your vacation and if you like to dress up a bit do it, you won't be the only one. :)
TEXASMUNK Posted September 21, 2006 #11 Share Posted September 21, 2006 Not trying to "hijack" this thread, but... This thing with Capri pants. I gotta believe some fashion designer said to another fashion designer: "Look, let's cut 12 inches off these pants, they will look silly, but I bet we still get women to wear them" Common ladies, admit it, you guys will buy anything if someone tells you it is "in style" Guys, dockers and golf shirts..our choice, no fashion house dictate!!! :-))

map1961 Posted September 25, 2006 #13 Share Posted September 25, 2006 Jim, For me, capri pants are my saving grace! :) As I hate my thighs and refuse to wear shorts, bermuda shorts and capris are just the ticket. I applaud the fashion designer who came up with it!!!;)

Sue L Posted September 25, 2006 #15 Share Posted September 25, 2006 I just got back from a 5 day on the Explorer and I thought it might be "less formal" than a longer cruise and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't. We saw many tuxes on formal night and the casual nights were pretty dressy also. Actually some of the outfits I saw on casual nights would have worked for formal nights with sparkles and spangles. I wore dressy capris two nights with nice tops and fit right in. Sue

dougp26364 Posted September 25, 2006 #17 Share Posted September 25, 2006 If you felt overdressed on Carnval in a Sundress then you'll be a little more pleased with RCI. While there really is no dress code, just suggested atire, most people still dress pretty decent for dinner. Formal nights have become a little less formal with most men wearing suits instead of tux's but all most everyone dresses apporpriatly for the occasion. You will still see the odd duck dressed down and looking somewhat out of place but, RCI still welcomes them with open arms. Fortunately (IMO) that's the minority rather than the rule. As for capri pants, my wife wears them on a regular basis to the dining room. IMO, it's a little more casual than I like but, she's comfortable in them and RCI doesn't seem to mind. I'm certainly not going to argue with the comander and chief about capri's vs slacks while we're on vaction. If that's what she wants to wear then by golly that's what she's going to wear. texancruzer Posted September 25, 2006 #18 Share Posted September 25, 2006 I also do not like my thighs  ..... but I do not wear capri's to the dining room. We do dress formally on formal night - tux for dh and formals for me. On other nights I usually wear a dressy sundress or a cute skirt/top or a nice slacks outfit.... I just don't FEEL quite dressed enough in capris for the dining room.

Host Kewlguy Posted September 25, 2006 #20 Share Posted September 25, 2006 On our last two cruises you didn't have to look too hard to find jeans and shorts being worn in the dining room on casual nights. Since I always observe the dress code I wore dockers and polo shirts.
dachshunddoglover Posted September 25, 2006 #21 Share Posted September 25, 2006 I love Capri's and a nice Pedicure to show off those adorable toes. I have gained so much weight, but the one thing that still looks great are my toes. Enjoy your cruise. Elizabeth
Annefran Posted September 25, 2006 #22 Share Posted September 25, 2006 When of the reasons I love to cruise is it gives me an opportunity to dress up as much as want. I totally agree with everyone, you will look wonderful no matter what and will be fine. Not sure why people dress down so much but that is their progrative (sp). I love the formal nights and love to see how everyone looks for photos etc. On the other nights, it's dressy casual if that makes sense for me. Have fun it's your cruise vacation! molly361 Posted September 25, 2006 #23 Share Posted September 25, 2006 We just got off the 4 night Majesty cruise and in 20 plus cruises we have never seen so many people in the dining room for dinner in shorts, both men and women- I cannot say for formal night as we did not eat in the dining room that evening- The server told us that you will see more shorts in the dining room in the evening on the 3 and 4 night cruises- And I am not trying to start a riot either, just stating our observations:D

Why I believe this has been the most civilized dress thread to date. You can't help it if people don't observe the suggested dress atire for the evening or if RCI doesn't enforce the suggested dress atire for the evening. All you can do is go along with it or, find another cruise line that's a little more strict with their suggested dining room dress atire for that evening. Like it or not, RCI has become a very casual cruise line. While I might dress up a little more for dinner if someone else wants to dress down and, if RCI doesn't mind then I don't either. If it ever gets to the point where everyone in the main dining room looks as if they're out for a meal at McDonalds, then I might consider another alrernative to the main dining room. Either one of the alternative dining venues or another cruise line. For now, I remain satisfied with RCI.
