Wearing White Sandals in October

Recommended Posts

Hope I won't be an outcast on "Glory" leaving Sept 30th. Got a last minute ticket and will be travelling alone. Family and friends couldn't make last minute. At least I won't have family or friends laugh at me. I got a great deal on some Rockport sandals because they were white! So if you spot an old fat lady wearing white sandals, say HI! :)

Right on ladies, I admire your spirit. DH and I scheduled to sail on the Caribbean Princess on the 30th also. Our trip has been jeopardized by the illness of our beloved dog, now it is looking more like we will be able to go, but won't know for sure until Thursday when she has a procedure. We are scheduled to leave friday for one night stay in FLL. If we get to go I truly plan on letting my hair down, having fun, lavishing attention on stressed out DH, and enjoying the ocean and the pampering. Can't hardly wait, and I wish you a great cruise on the Glory. Let's just wear whatever floats our own boat.

It's hot in the Caribbean so the old rule of no white after Labor Day doesn't apply there. In fact, the rule is passe'. Wear it if ya got it!

Yes and I do believe it never applied in Hawaii either or Austalia sinc etheir seasons are the opposite of ours!

those rules were silly. I remeber one Feb. it was unusally warm-around 78 that day and I was around 10 or so-I put on a pair of shorts and Mom got on to me because it was February! I was not allowed to wear shorts at home in my yard until after March 20 the first day of spring.

Here the rule was at Easter we could wear white shoes (I live in Ga) instead of after Memorial Day. It seemed though -almost every year- we would have a cold snap at Easter (people call that Blackberry winter when that happens) so you would see people in their Easter white with a winter coat!!!

comfortcove, I'm so sorry to hear of the illness of your pup. It is so hard to see our loved ones suffer. I went through something similar with a kitty last fall, so I know how you feel. I'm wishing your baby the best for a full recovery and hope that you get to go on that cruise!

Thank you for the good wishes. I hope your kitty is now well. We don't know what is going to happen here, and it is difficult to be calm. I am just trying not to think too much about, preparing to travel and hoping for the best. If the procedure goes well she will be well cared for at home by our 14 year old, and my BIL will be staying here for the week. If it goes poorly we will have to cancel, and our travel insurance won't cover this situation. Most of all, I want her to get well, but it would be super to get to go on our cruise too.

I understand exactly what you're going through. Ours wouldn't have covered cancellation, either, but fortunately, it all worked out for us and I am hoping for you, too! You realize just how much these furry friends mean to us when you're faced with such a situation.

Mine is doing as well as can be expected now. His illness either caused or uncovered a chronic kidney problem, so we're on "maintenance" now, doing the best we can. He has good periods and bad periods. Last fall, we weren't even sure he'd make it, but with the help of a good vet, we have enjoyed his loving company for almost another year and he's doing well (sitting in my lap as I type).

I'll be sending good thoughts for your dear friend.

Wearing white anytime of the year is fine anymore! We even wear white in the winter! No big deal! You wear what you feel comfortable in! Dress for yourself and not for others! Have a safe fun cruise!

I don't know a whole lot about geography, but I do know that Australia is on the other side of the earth, Hawaii is not. Hawaii has the same seasons as us, they are not opposite. They are only 3 hours behind us with Daylight Savings time (Pacific), 2 hours the rest of the year. Australia is 7500 miles away from mainland US, in a different hemisphere than the US and Hawaii. After you fly 2500 miles to Hawaii from the west coast, Australia is around 5000 miles farther away.

I think any time you leave the US, the Labor Day does not apply, because it is our national holiday. BTW, Hawaii has Labor Day, as they are a state in our union ;) . Although, I highly doubt that anyone in Hawaii would look down on you for wearing white shoes any time of the year, they have summer like weather practically all year round.

Fashion (rules) may adjust in other countries as well, I don't really know, someone who travels out of the US frequently will have the answers. If I am travelling out of the country (not yet, someday) I will certainly look up the customs and culture and holidays of the country I am visiting.

This is not a big deal and I don't mean to be condescending or argumentative, just a minor correction :)

The reversed seasons happen between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, not the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. In other words, countries south of the Equator have winter when those north of the Equator have summer. When I lived in Brazil, our seasons were opposite those of my parents in Florida. I never quite got used to hot, humid Decembers and chilly Julys.

When I lived in Venezuela, we were north of the equator so the "slightly cool" season was the same time as South Florida's winter. When I lived in Kenya we were only miles south the Equator, about an hour drive. The seasons were more like rainy and dry, rather than what we think of winter and summer. The same was true of the Philippines even though we were north of the Equator.

Back to the white shoe question. Any thing goes on a Caribbean cruise any time of year. But when I lived in the Philippines, a tropical country, a Filipina friend commented on my white shoes and told me "only Americans wear white shoes." I was so surprised, but I realized she did appear to right, at least in the R.P. That was twenty years ago. I do not know if attitudes have changed today about wearing white shoes in the Philippines.

I've been to Hawaii in the winter and trust me, their seasons run the exact same as ours. Not quite as cool and wet as Oregon in December but certainly not as warm as the summer months.
