Choozin Croozin Posted September 25, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 25, 2006 STA seems to one of the most reasonable rates I have found with decent coverage. I still can't past the ole saying "you get what you pay for". Anybody know about them or have made a claim?

suznf Posted October 3, 2006 #3 Share Posted October 3, 2006 Hope this helps! STA travel is a student travel website, but they will insure American and Canadian travelers of any age for trips up to $20000...including preexisting conditions if you book early enough. The policy is available on their website. We found this was both comprehensive and inexpensive for our family (and it covers scuba diving and parasailing ...which some of the others dont) STA travel has been around for a long time (billed as the largest student travel agency worldwide) and has an excellent reputation, the insurance policy is underwritten by BerkelyCare which is the same company that is used by Princess Cruises, Seabourn Cruises, Holland America, Windstar, Trafalgar Tours and United Airlines Vacations (I checked their websites). If you search for BerkelyCare in the Seabourn forum there are plenty of posts from people that have filed claims with them (Berkelycare) and have been very pleased. From the STA website: This plan was designed and administrated by BerkelyCare, a division of Affinity Insurance Services, Inc., in all states except: AIS Affinity Isurance Agency, Inc. in CA/MN/OK; and AIS Affinity Insurance Agency in NH and NY. Claims are administered by BerkelyCare, a division of Affinity Insurance Services, Inc. in OK; and AIS Affinity Insurance Agency in NH and NY. CA License # 0795465 I have booked travel through the STA for my DSs and have been very pleased with their service. We used them for trip insurance on our last cruise and are using them for our next- but haven’t had to make a claim. I assume it is so much cheaper than through the cruise lines because it is being sold on a student travel website. Not many people (who aren't students) would even think to look there. But it sure saved us some $$!! We’ve got you covered Our Travel Protection offers affordable worldwide coverage for budget-conscious travelers of any age. We’ve structured our plan to provide maximum flexibility, offering you a broad travel protection package that will cover you while you’re traveling away from home. Travel protection Baggage protection » Trip Cancellation» Lost or stolen baggage » Trip Interruption » Delayed baggage »Trip Delay Medical protection Travel accident protection» Sickness or accident» Accidental death & dismemberment» Emergency Evacuation "Buy early” feature adds coverage for Worldwide emergency assistance services» Terrorism » 24-hour travel & medical emergency assistance » Pre-Existing Medical Conditions » Emergency cash transfer» Travel Supplier Financial Insolvency Heres to never needing to use it!! Choozin Croozin Posted October 3, 2006 Author #4 Share Posted October 3, 2006 suznf - Thanks so much for your reply. I have really wanted to book with them but have just been nervous that there coverage wasn't enough or that they didn't included what you need them to include. I read the policy and just kept being afraid that I was overlooking something. My largest concern is that this is our first trip without our son who is in college, and I worry if something might happen......It sounds like I might just go with them. The price is definately right and a reputable company. Thank You again. I needed that reassurance. ;)
cruiseco Posted October 3, 2006 #5 Share Posted October 3, 2006 When BerkleyCare -- or any other travel insurer that doesn't charge premiums based on the age of each specific traveler -- develops a plan for a travel supplier or agency they look at the demographics of their clientele to come up with the premiums. So, if they're going to provide a plan for Seabourn they'll know they're insuring clients who, on average, are over 55 years old and adjust the premiums accordingly. For Seabourn clients that are in their 30's they'll be paying more than they probably should as they are younger -- and presumably healthier -- then the average. Since STA specializes in student travel their clients probably average well under 30 years of age and the premiums reflect that. So, those that are older than that average are getting a good deal since their premiums are based on the assumption that they're probably in that 30 and under age group. "Wandering Wino's&quo Posted October 3, 2006 #6 Share Posted October 3, 2006 STA seems to one of the most reasonable rates I have found with decent coverage. I still can't past the ole saying "you get what you pay for". Anybody know about them or have made a claim? For our 3 week European trip, including a 7 day cruise out of Barcelona to Lisbon and then on to Italy we book STA as our travel insurance. Prior to the trip I did a fair amount of research into different insurance companies and used CC as a resource. Happily we didn't need to use the insurance but we did feel very secure regarding their coverage. Hope this helps.
Choozin Croozin Posted October 3, 2006 Author #7 Share Posted October 3, 2006 cruiseco, what you say makes alot of sense. THanks to you and Winos for your input. I emailed their plan to my brother for him to make sure it will cover what I want and I would imagine he'll be interested in them too. I just am not good at decifering that kind of stuff. Thanks again for your help. :D
Laurab23 Posted October 4, 2006 #8 Share Posted October 4, 2006 I was going to get their insurance but when I called to get it they said they had no pre existing condition waiver even if you bought it as soon as you booked the cruise so that changed my mind. With health issues,I had to have a pre existing clause waiver. Laura
Choozin Croozin Posted October 4, 2006 Author #9 Share Posted October 4, 2006 After further investigation it looks like this is secondary insurance???? and my brother said that he thought it wouldn't cover if we missed the plane thus missing the cruise due to say a snow storm? Does this sound right to anyone that has used it? I do wish it covered terrorism.

Does this sound right to anyone that has used it? I do wish it covered terrorism. This is not secondary insurance. If you purchase the STA Travel Protection plan in full within 14 days of your deposit , you will be eligible to receive Trip Cancellation/Interruption benefits should you cancel or interrupt your trip for the following additional covered reasons: 1. Financial Insolvency 2. Terrorisum and several other reasons. This is from the booklet that came with my policy. Try calling them and have them send you the booklet called "know before you go. It outlines the coverage that is included. Hope this is of some help Shirley
Choozin Croozin Posted October 4, 2006 Author #11 Share Posted October 4, 2006 Thanks Shirley, I will do that. They can probably clear up some things too. Unfortunately, we booked last March so I guess you'd say that addtl coverage is out of the question. ;)
FuzzyMelton Posted October 12, 2006 #12 Share Posted October 12, 2006 choozon' cruzin' I would be interested to hear what you found out or decided about STA insurance. I have about 7 more days to meet my 14 day requirement and am very interested in STA. thanks, Fuzzy
Choozin Croozin Posted October 12, 2006 Author #13 Share Posted October 12, 2006 Fuzzy, I did end up booking with STA. After calling them, I felt very confident that they would cover what I needed. The one thing that she did tell me, was the insurance will cover you on all your excursions until your feet leave the ground. SO no ziplining for me :). I did get the documents already and I am pleased, especially for the $$.
Carmic Posted February 23, 2007 #14 Share Posted February 23, 2007 We just booked a cruise and were thinking of getting the Sta Travel Insurance. Anyone out there with more thoughts or experiences with Sta Travel? Thanks, Carol
Indiana Jones Posted February 23, 2007 #15 Share Posted February 23, 2007 ...is an issue for the medical portion of the plan. Not sure about the plan you have been discussing here, but a lot of the plans are secondary. We just booked with Travel Insured Intl - primary medical coverage - for a very reasonable premium.
