PATDEN Posted September 25, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 25, 2006 Has anyone ever taken a cab to Magen's Bay when they were docked in St. Thomas, and if so, how much of a cab ride is it? Also, is it easy to get a cab back to the ship from Magen's Bay? I'd rather not book an excursion through Princess just to go to Magen's Bay for a few hours. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.
chrysalis Posted September 25, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 25, 2006 you will probably be able to get more info if you post your question on the "ports of call" board here
mikeob Posted September 25, 2006 #3 Share Posted September 25, 2006 We were in St. Thomas last year in October and cabbed from the pier to Magens Bay. They qeue all the cabs right outside the dock and put 6 people in a cab. I think it cost my wife and I $6.00 each for the cab ride. When you're ready to leave Magens Bay, there are plenty of cabs in the beach parking lot waiting to take you back to the ship for the same price. Magens Bay is a beautiful beach and you can rent a chair there along with usi ng all the facilities there. We are going again in 2 weeks on the Norwegian Majesty and plan on spending the day on Magens Bay. Have a great trip--Mike OB

AerynSun_JohnCrighton Posted September 25, 2006 #5 Share Posted September 25, 2006 We did it last year... I think 6 pp is about right and taxi's come back and forth to the beach so it's not hard and not a long wait when your ready to leave. The beach is beautiful! momasita Posted September 25, 2006 #6 Share Posted September 25, 2006 Yep 6$, and don't bother asking them to come back at a certain time (the do try;)) as there are MORE than enough taxi's waiting for this exact thing...BTW We loved this area.. Cleo245 Posted September 25, 2006 #7 Share Posted September 25, 2006 Having been to Magen's Bay, last year in St. Thomas we went to Sapphire beach. It is on the other side of the island, you can see St. Johns from the beach. Much nice than Magen's Bay and the taxi at the port will take you there for about the same price. There are also taxis there to take you back. Some other people we had dinner with went to Morningstar Beach, it is closer and they also liked that. I was not impressed with Magen's Bay. Just my opinion though.
PATDEN Posted September 26, 2006 Author #8 Share Posted September 26, 2006 Thanks for all the replies. Looks like it will be easy to take a cab to and from Megan's Beach, so that's what we'll do. Only 6 1/2 more weeks till it becomes reality.

Just my opinion though. Magen's Bay is beautiful but the last time we were there it was wall to wall people. I also felt that is was much more commercialized than our previous visit a few years before. Definitely prefer Sapphire beach - way less crowded and I understand there is some good snorkeling on the far right or far left (cannot remember which). The beach is actually part of a resort, but all beaches in St. Thomas are public. There is a nice restaurant, very nice rest rooms and we rented a chair for $5.00. If you get there early enought, there are some shade trees.
corkpopr Posted September 26, 2006 #10 Share Posted September 26, 2006 You should go to Koki beach for the best snorkle experience. we have been there 3 times. we have also been to sapphire beach twice. both are far better than megans beach
CruiseFun07 Posted September 26, 2006 #11 Share Posted September 26, 2006 We were at Megan's Bay in August and I have to admit, I was not impressed. Yes, it is a beutiful view. The beach, however, was not that great. I'd prefer either Sapphire or just go over to St. John. Although getting to St. John is much more money. Either way, have fun. Editor Posted September 26, 2006 #12 Share Posted September 26, 2006 If you have the time, skip St. Thomas beaches and take the ferry to St. John. Hawksnest Beach is very close to Cruz Bay and a beautiful beach.
loveJake Posted September 26, 2006 #13 Share Posted September 26, 2006 I have been to both Megan's Bay and Coki Beach/Coral World. What we always do is to go to the beach as soon as you can get off the ship, in our case it was 8:00 both times. Stay till about 1 and then return to the ship, shower and do some shopping. Most people only start hitting the beaches around 11 to noon, that's when it starts to get full, also depends on how many ships are in port. Megan's Bay is beautiful calm water with no waves, Coki beach is the same. Both beaches were clean with chairs to rent and snack bars. The snorkling is great at Coki's beach because they feed the fish (Coral World). St. John is fine if you want to worry all day about making the ferry back. My son went came back on the noon ferry because he was afraid of missing the next one. Our ship did pull away from the dock and we had people from the ship waving at us from the dock. Since we were only about 25 feet from shore the ship went back.
Island Annie Posted October 4, 2006 #14 Share Posted October 4, 2006 As you walk off your ship in St. Thomas, you'll see a mountain to your left. Magan's Bay is just on the other side of that mountain. (about a 30 minute cab ride). Magan's Bay (IMO) is nice. They offer lounge chairs to rent, floating mats & snorkle eqt. And most importantly, Calm waters. They have a small gift shop/boutique there selling lots of suveniors, and beachwear. They also have a small beach restaurant there serving sandwhiches, salads & burgers. (small patio with 2-3 tables). There are restroom&showering & changing rooms located near to where the taxis gather, and a small beach bar closer to the other end of the beach. As I recall, the taxis do like to wait to fill their vehichle before leaving the pier and then again before leaving Magans, and I think it was $6 per person each way. (There is also an entrance fee to Magan's Bay of $3 or $5 that your driver will ask you for when he pulls up to the booth). You shouldn't have any problem getting a taxi back to the pier. Every time I've been there, there's always been 5-6 taxis in the parking lot who just dropped some people off & are now looking for some to take back. If you just stand or sit in the area where they dropped you off & let one of them know you're ready to go back they'll see to it that you're put into the next cab. Enjoy! cruisegal40 Posted October 5, 2006 #15 Share Posted October 5, 2006 Cleo245, were there restaurants or anything open at Sapphire. I keep trying to find out what the details are. I keep hearing that the restaurant is closed and only snacks available at the hotel store. Can you be more specific? We have been dissapointed in Meagan's Bay the last few years and looking for something else to do.

cruisegal40 Posted October 5, 2006 #17 Share Posted October 5, 2006 Thank you for the info. Not what I wanted to hear. Thought there would be more there. Don't want overcrowding, but something a little more. I will have to keep checking. Thinking about going to Coki Beach. Only two ships on port that day. If we get there early, we may be all set. Thank you again.
richtersl Posted October 5, 2006 #18 Share Posted October 5, 2006 With two ships in town you will have your pick of beaches. Don't worry about crowds. ;)
