iluvcruises Posted September 26, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 26, 2006 We will be going on our cruise in November and one of our stops is St. Thomas. My husband and I usually buy the maximum allowance on liquor and take as a carry on to the plane. Just wondering with the new "liquid" law on the planes if we can still carry boxed liquor onto the airplane. Has anyone recently gotten off a cruise with liquor and were you able to carry on the plane or do we have to try and pack what we can? Thanks for any info! shoreguy Posted September 27, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 27, 2006 Think about what you can pack in your checked bag :(
FlyerTalker Posted September 27, 2006 #3 Share Posted September 27, 2006 Take the money you were going to spend on a "six-pack" and get one good bottle of something that you are unlikely to be able to find in the USA. Then put it in a ziplock, pack it in bubble wrap and put it in the middle of your hardside suitcase. The liquor stores in STT must be apoplectic over the liquids ban on airlines...they've lost everyone as customers except those that drive to the cruise terminals. Keith1010 Posted September 27, 2006 #4 Share Posted September 27, 2006 You will not be able to carry the liquor in your carry ons. It must be checked with your luggage. As usual, the advice given by FlyerTalker makes excellent sense and is the way to go. Keith
bubiesmom Posted September 27, 2006 #5 Share Posted September 27, 2006 :( I have soft sided luggage.
bflowngs Posted September 27, 2006 #6 Share Posted September 27, 2006 I have put the bottles in my soft side luggage and have not had a problem. Make sure it is wrapped in plastic, then just wrap your clothes around them and place in middle of suitcase.
FlyerTalker Posted September 27, 2006 #7 Share Posted September 27, 2006 I merely said hardside in that it might give more protection than a softside for a bottle. The big factor is putting a cushioning layer around it, then having it as far away from ANY side of the suitcase as possible. Also away from other hard objects in the same bag -- put them in your spouse's bag or your second one.
Cruise Junky Posted September 28, 2006 #8 Share Posted September 28, 2006 I know it's not as sexy as having it in its original bottle, but if you don't want to take a chance on smashing the bottle (it's happened to us, not pretty) you could pack it in water bottles to bring home. CAPinBoynton Posted September 30, 2006 #9 Share Posted September 30, 2006 When we were on the Freedom recently, I asked the guy in the onboard liquor store about it. He said that some people put it in their checked luggage as stated above. Also, he would pack it securely for you and mark the box as fragile. Then at the airport, you tell them what it is and they would handle it seperately as checked bags. I have no idea how that worked, nor have I spoken to anyone who did it that way. We might have a bunch of very happy baggage handlers!:D:eek::D
Geema Posted September 30, 2006 #10 Share Posted September 30, 2006 Friends of ours just came back last week from a cruise and said they taped two boxes of liquor together, wrote their name on it and the airline put tags on the handles. They came through beautifully! They did say next time they'll bring the brown tape that's used for mailing packages to make it stronger. The liquor store gave them some foam wrapping for around the bottles that were glass. They flew on Northwest.
