Anatresia Posted October 2, 2006 #1 Share Posted October 2, 2006 First time cruiser here with a curious, just for fun, question inspired by my MIL's boss. She went on a 7 day cruise and gained 15 pounds! I can't imagine gaining that much so quickly, but I guess it's possible. I was just wondering what some people gain, if they go and just have a good time, without really limiting themselves. I limit myself daily to maintain my weight, and don't want to feel the need to do so on my vacation (I'll be very good afterwards, promise.) That's one of the highlights for me- eating whatever I want without worrying about the scale for one week of my life. I do know about the healthy meal choices and the fitness center, so I know you can cruise without hurting your diet, but what I really want to know is- if you let go and devour whatever you feel like on a Carnival cruise, how bad is the damage? :D
GoinCruisin Posted October 2, 2006 #2 Share Posted October 2, 2006 I don't limit myself... but I also don't gorge myself just because I'm cruising. Have never gained any weight... I always take the stairs and don't overendulge.

While on board, anyway. At home is another story! The heat ( humidity ) at the ports causing me to sweat buckets and no appetite. I can't seem to eat when it is stifling hot. While on ship there is lots to do and a lot of walking. Like I said, I guess I am lucky and don't gain any weight. But there is a whole lotta of eating to be done on a ship. Anything you want! When you want it!

adbnva Posted October 2, 2006 #6 Share Posted October 2, 2006 i went on south beach 2 wks before i left. lost 5 lbs & gained it back. i usually do not gain on cruises, but have a tendenacy to gain 5 lb or so @ the time. could not beleive it. i did not overindulge in carbs & worked out 3 times in 5 days. getting old is not for sissies or skinny women. suzy1212 Posted October 2, 2006 #7 Share Posted October 2, 2006 I've gotten to an age where it seems to be very easy to gain weight. :( I gained 3 pounds on the cruise, but my weight goes up and down by about 5 pounds for no reason now days. bonitah69 Posted October 2, 2006 #8 Share Posted October 2, 2006 This is gonna sound weird....but I usually loose weight on a cruise. I don't use the gym onboard & eat as much as I want. I do take the stairs & walk a couple miles on deck every day, which is more than I do at home. The cruise I got back from 2 weeks ago, I actually weighed the same as when I left. I still ate as much as I wanted but I didn't walk the deck. You do tend to be a little more active on a cruise & that does help. Don't worry about your weight that week & enjoy your cruise! :)
ugotoots Posted October 2, 2006 #9 Share Posted October 2, 2006 I also lose weight. Very picky eater. Breakfast is the only meal I really enjoy! Expensive way to diet!
bubbles1209 Posted October 2, 2006 #10 Share Posted October 2, 2006 I'm not sure if I lost or gained, but I do know that I hardly ate for 2 days once we got back home. Was still full from the cruise:p If I did gain, it couldn't have been very much at all, because everything fit the same way it did when I left:)
Wennfred Posted October 2, 2006 #11 Share Posted October 2, 2006 Gained only 2 pounds on the Pride, not good, I was hoping to gain like 10 lbs, I guess I will have to work on that on the Spirit this April :D
Sue L Posted October 2, 2006 #12 Share Posted October 2, 2006 I usually lose weight. I eat what I want but we always try to get a aft cabin so walking is a must where ever we go. It works for us
LHP Posted October 2, 2006 #13 Share Posted October 2, 2006 I lose 3 pounds if it is a 5 day cruise and 5 pounds if it is a 7 day cruise. Why? Because for some reason on a cruise ship I end up picking at my meal instead of "gorging" myself. The food is great...no complaints there...I just don't have much of an appetite. Also I walk constantly on the ship, which I definately do not do at home. (when would I have time...I am always on this computer) Walking I think is the biggest key. Hubby lost 40 pounds over the course of a year and he only made 2 changes....he started walking 2 miles a day minimum (and faithfully) and eating lunch at Subway (without all the fattening dressings). DqALEX Posted October 2, 2006 #14 Share Posted October 2, 2006 On my last cruise it was on the celebration. You do a lot of walking on that ship. old small elevators. I gained nothing. The cruise before that on the triumph, so much weight I dont want to talk about it

Anatresia Posted October 2, 2006 Author #17 Share Posted October 2, 2006 I'm glad to see that the weight gains are minimal and that some people lost! That's good! When I heard that 15 pound story, I was a bit nervous. That would literally change the way your clothes fit!
HeidiHo Posted October 2, 2006 #18 Share Posted October 2, 2006 OK, I'll be the 1st to admit to gaining A LOT of weight. I gained 14 lbs on the Miracle :o but...I purposely lost 5 lbs (that I didn't need to lose) before the cruise and I think much of the rest of the weight gain was water retention because I lost 7 lbs within the 1st 3 days after the cruise so actually I was only a couple of lbs over my normal weight after 3 days at home. I admit to eating and drinking a lot during the cruise. I guess that's because I had been on Weight Watchers for 2 1/2 years (lost 80 lbs) and really wanted this to be a vacation from everything, including my diet.:)
zqvol Posted October 2, 2006 #19 Share Posted October 2, 2006 I usually lose a few pounds. There is plenty of food, but IMO it is mediocre at best so I tend not to eat a lot.
TexasRed Posted October 2, 2006 #20 Share Posted October 2, 2006 On our first cruise, I lost 2 pounds! We walked several mornings, and took the stairs instead of the elevators alot. We try to do that on every cruise now. Last cruise I probably gained a couple pounds, I am not a slave to the scale so I don't really know. I just try to enjoy myself. I have seen some women post that if they have two formals, they will wear the more snug one the first formal night, and the looser one the last formal night. toz Posted October 2, 2006 #22 Share Posted October 2, 2006 Walk the decks...you won't gain..also don't pig-out. The most I ever gained was 2 pounds...and I'm over 50, which makes a difference.
Bunkie103 Posted October 3, 2006 #23 Share Posted October 3, 2006 I lost 1/2 a pound on our last 5 day cruise. Portions are nice size, not like some restaurants at home where they are huge. I ate everything I wanted, but we were very active too!
shipty2 Posted October 3, 2006 #24 Share Posted October 3, 2006 This last cruise on Elation was my first time losing weight on a cruise. I ate much more fruit than usual and swam alot!
EJ'S MOM-MOM Posted October 3, 2006 #25 Share Posted October 3, 2006 I have had a weight problem for most of my life. I had to watch what I ate all the time but in my old age I gave up all the worry about it. I get regular check-ups & even though I am considerably over weight I come up very healthy every time. :) I went to the doctor for my yearly check-up right before my cruise last May & had an appt. a week after I came home for follow-up just to check all test results ( as usual all very good ) & lo & behold I lost 5 lbs. on the cruise. WOW ! :D But I think it was because we has a stateroom all the way in the front of the ship & the dinning room was all the way in the back so we walked a lot, took stairs often & were busy talking to our tablemates so much that we did not have time for more than one serving of each meal & the portions are not very big but really more than enough as I always left full.
