8:00PM - Visit the Buffet and see what they have and simple the 2nd seating buffet

... all that and on average I gain..... negative 5 pounds... Yes! I loose weight by eating! I call it the Cruise Ship diet! It's the diet where you eat what ever you want but you have to pretend that theres no such thing as an elevator.

Wow Skaterjasp - surprised you had time to actually 'participate' in any ship's activities (or did you? :D :D )

On my dh's first cruise he just went all out - esp gorging on Princess' hot from the oven chocolate chip cookies (and probably when I was not watching him!). Came home with 8 extra pounds and kinda flipped out! (I gained about 4 on that cruise).

On his next cruise (Jan 2006) he was determined not to have the same experience - packed his heart rate monitor/calorie watch and diligently jogged/walked the outside track daily - sometimes twice a day - and watched his intake a bit better - came back with only a 1 lb gain!

I recently cruised w/a gf and to be very honest I did not limit my intake and enjoyed my meals immensely - I was a bit nervous about what the scale would say when I got home - but I was shocked to see I had actually lost a lb!

Dh wanted to know what I did! I must have walked the track daily? (No). Obviously only took the stairs and not the elevator? (No). Watched what I ate and denied myself desserts? (No)..... Can't really explain except for the all the walking back and forth from place to place - I think we forget how big the ship is and how much more walking we do (to go from one food place to another? ha ha ha:eek: ).

It can be done!

Froufie:cool:

I gained 3 lbs. on 7 day cruise. I had dessert every night which I don't normally do. Also the 24 hour ice cream didn't help. Nor did the drink of the day.

Watched what I ate when I got home and the 3 lbs came off in a week or so.

You know that's a shame when people can't control their eating habits. I never gained an ounce. However my shoes seemed to weigh more as did my clothes. That was amazing.

And my wrist watch gained so much weigh I could hardly pick up my arm. I know my belt gained weight because the holes were further apart. The worst part after I got home was my mirror seemed to have gotten thinner! Go figure.

I putting all those items on a diet before we go on the cruise, it's hard to enjoy yourself with your clothes gaining all that weight!!!!:D

My husband went on the cruise 175 lbs. and came home 205 lbs. But 205 is his normal weight because he dieted about 6 months before cruise. He also went on the Mediterranean 12 day cruise last May and lost about 5 lbs. by eating sensibly and running 2 hours a day. He ran 1 hour in the morning on the track and ran 1 hour on the treadmill in the evening. I usually maintain my weight by running and eating a few extra desserts. I always worry how much I will gain and lifting and running helps me alot. I'm able to eat things I normally don't. As long as you don't go crazy you won't gain much. We are going on the Miracle Oct. 29th, my 26th Carnival cruise, and plan to eat along with exercise which helps both mentally and physically.

On this last 8 day trip I skipped the bread to have room for desert. The pineapple sorbet was refreshing. I also kept alcohol to a minimum. We danced every chance we got. I only worked out once, but we went swimming in St Thomas and Grand Turk.

I did gain about 2 pounds, which is disappearing now. Usually I don't gain at all.

Okay, note to self, I'm gonna pack my pedometer this year just to track how much I actually walk on a cruise. I do walk from here to there and take the stairs instead of the elevator. I don't usually go to the gym, I'm on vacation  I do that a home! I do enjoy deck walking.

But those dod's do have calories and I do my best to get my fair share of them :D That is really my main indulgence. I'm not a big eater.

I've gained as much as 5# on a cruise but I've also lost that much on a cruise too. The gain usually goes away in just 2 or 3 days. I think it is water weight from too much sodium in the food. (or rims of the margaritas, you can ask for no salt but sometimes you still get it)

Now my dh loves to eat and he can easily gain 10# per cruise--but he cuts back before and after the cruise to get his weight back to normal within a couple of weeks. He loves those sweets and early morning danishes, late night pizza and ice cream. Dessert and ice cream in the dining room every night. Room service. He enjoys it all. I get tired of watching him eat. And he doesn't walk as much--he SITS in the casino and rides the elevators whenever possible. He's 5'10" normal weight 185-190 but he's hit as high as 202 after a cruise. He thinks it's worth it and so far the weight has always been fairly easy for him to lose.

Happy sails!

We just got off the Triumph Sat after a 7 day cruise. Prior to going on this cruise both DH and I were on Weight Watchers (Went right back on the points when we got home). He had lost 55lbs and I had lost 49lbs. :) We both decided that we were going to throw WW off the balcony this cruise and we did too. We ate and drank ourselves silly. :p I was taking the stairs as often as I could. He on the other hand refused too. He gained 12lbs and I had gained a whooping 18lbs.

We both stepped on the scale this morning and I have lost 12lbs since Sat evening and He's lost 10lbs. So you see most of this is water weight.

Would I do this again? You betcha! Just not any closer than a year from now. Our waistlines and our wallets can't afford it...... :D

Like you, I am very careful as to what I eat at home. I usually gain 3 - 4 lbs on a cruise but loose it after a week of a very strict diet (dry veggies, salads w/non fat dressing, all bran).

I eat whatever I want on a cruise & never use the elevator. I go to the gym a couple of times a day & while in port always walk to the tourist area (it's usually pretty close).

I also just have coffee in the morning except for the last day when I indulge in breakfast - that's pretty much all I eat that day. By then my body has taken in all the food I can eat. I also am careful the 2 -3 days before the cruise. The weight gain is the ONLY reason I'm not on a cruise every couple of months!

I have to agree with the walking and using stairs. I have also lost appox 2-3 pounds each cruise, with all the walking on the ship and at the ports and using the stairs I get more exercise than I do at home. Also I eat way more fruits and salads on the ship. (yummy)

Last 5 day on the Holiday, I gained 12 lbs. Our waiter was from Romania and he kept bringing me food with a smirk on his face. I guess he enjoyed watching me pig out. We Americans do enjoy our food! LOL!

Just got our docs today for my next Pig-out-athon!! Woohooo!!!

My husband and I have lost weight on all our cruises. We don't go to the gym either. We take the stairs up and down all day long. We go for walks on the top deck after dinner. I also don't really like most desserts so I eat a bite or two and leave them. I did go to tea time every day on the Summit and enjoyed the bite sized sweets and cookies. Also, on excursions, we like the ones that include a good hike. I also think we eat healthier on cruises.

So far, each cruise I have averaged a loss of 3 to 5 pounds. We rarely take elevators, and our shore excursions tend to be pretty active. So I don't have any issues with eating what I want when I want it, or finding myself getting a little "over served", because I know the exercise I'm getting will balance it out. Besides, even if my cruise ship eating and drinking habits caused a weight gain, who cares, I'm on vacation and life's too short anyway. :p ;) :D

I rarely take an elevator am very active BUT!!! I can eat my weight in food! So usually that's PROBABLY the reason for my immense weight gains! Sucky part is that I lost 5 fairly quickly but 7 lbs stuck for a year!! Soooo..I've been hitting the gym to get those 7 and some off so that I can gain it all back on the cruise in a month! Oh well...LM "FAT" AO!!

I actually managed to not gain anything --- was VERY suprised. Just took my frist cruise about 3 weeks ago. We had an aft stateroom (that is the back right) - which meant walking what seemed like miles to get to the front of the ship for the shows and more or less to anywhere. That and taking the stairs when going less than 2 decks away.

Ok, maybe I don't eat as much as I stated in the early post on a typical cruise, but its not far from it... What I found out is that its not about how much you eat but how active you are on the ship that determines how much weight you will gain. Generally I find really active things to do at port and that includes everything from walking around town to skateboarding to water sports.... that and pretty much enlimited the use of elevators (ok, maybe a couple ride on the glass elevator but I think their exampted from my "cruise ship" diet):D

I gained 9 pounds on our last cruise, July 22-29, 2006, on the Glory. I just got it off about 2 weeks ago. I'am an Atkins follower and it would certainly be easy to stay on Atkins on a cruise, but I chose not to!! Of course, one does seem to gain some extra weight when one (me?) eats breakfast in the formal dining room and then goes up to the buffet for more pastries and bacon. I had a blast and didn't want to worry about my weight. Now, I did have to wear the more figure hugging dresses earlier in the cruise. :D

Hi all,

I've taken at least 15 cruises over the past 5 years. Aboard ship, I eat what I want, never use the gym, will drink at night and I can say that I've never gained any weight and more often than not, I come back losing a few abouts (like 2 or 3 lbs.). I guess it's because i'm moving more aboard these cruises. Now that I said this, let's hope it's the same on next cruise aboard Carnival Legend (3/8/07).

Take care.

Maryjo:)

I can count on "dropping" 5 lbs. everytime....and I do eat on the cruise

I agree with another poster that your always on the go, hiking, climbing stairs, swimming, snorkelling and perhaps eat a bit healthier.

Chalk up another reason I just love cruising.

Robin
