Some last minute questions

Recommended Posts

We are leaving Friday for our 9 day cruise, I'll believe it's happening when we are in the limo on our way. Thought of some last minute questions...

I've already did online check-in. I need to know when we finally board what are the first things we should take care of. I remember reading something about only being able to get the drink passes on the first day..so we should take care of that I guess right away..am I correct? Anybody familiar with when to sign up for internet connection in your room? We decided we need to keep our laptop because in the middle of packing for all 5 of us..we are beginning a kitchen remodel hopefully next week and need to touch base with the contractor in case he needs us. So is this something that we arrange that day as well?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I am not in the best health and I've totally exhausted myself getting ready for all this, and want everything to be smooth so I can relax and enjoy myself finally.

Eileen - congrats on your cruise! You will have a great time :)

I'll try and answer some of your questions:

Yes, you can only purchase soda cards on the first day - usually sold right outside the Windjammer....so if you want them...get them before you have lunch.

I don't have any first hand info in internet in the cabin....I believe it's called WiFi - hopefully someone else pops in here and can explain the procedure.

I'm sorry to hear that you are not in the best of health.....use the 9 days of your cruise to relax and rejuvenate! :)

This is on my list of what we have to do when we board next Saturday:

Buy a Soda Card.

Make an appointment with the C&A person so we can book our next cruise on board to get any credits we may be entiteled to.

After that....... have fun and more fun! Enjoy your cruise and RELAX and ENJOY!

This is the first thing to do. Get your cabin computer set up. There are only a limited number that they do. Go straight to guest relations and sign up. They charge for the week but if you must stay in touch then do it!

The soda cards are on sale just at the entrance to Windjammer. Before you purchase ask yourself if you will drink at least 5 Cokes a day. If so buy it. If not pay for what you drink. They put a sticker on your card and give you a souvenier plastic glass for fillups.

There are a couple of options for bringing your own computer:

a) Cybercabin - flat rate for a (what I hear) slow dial up equivalent, but it is yours all week. You need to get the connecting equipment from them and they hook into existing ports on your laptop...there is a limited number of these set-ups available

b) WiFi - If you're computer has Internal Wireless or you have your own wireless card, then all you need to do is worry about the cost. If you have a laptop that does not have built-in wireless or a card, you can rent them from the Purser's Desk...again, they only have a limted number of them and they do go quickly

There several WiFi Hot Spots on the ship. Some of the cabins are even in range of the Hot Spots. However, the Purser did tell us that sometimes if you are logging in from your cabin even if you get signal, there is occasionally an issue with logging off. With an Apple, you can physically shut down the connection and a lot of the newer (last year or 2) Windows-based laptops have this feature that allows you to do this. Otherwise, you may be taking a chance accessing the WiFi from your cabin.

The basic charge for using the Internet (wirelessly or using the computers in the data center) is 50 cents/minute. You can buy a package that will get you 150 minutes for $50....33 cents/minute.

The laptop served my husband well enough as he was using it to finish an assignment and upload it to his Professor. I pretty much just used the computers in the data center . A note there, though. It is a satellite connection which are not as zingy as DSL or Cable anyway and when there are 10-15 people all trying to get online at the same time in the data center, it slows to a dead crawl. I made a habit of only going if noone or one or two people were there (usually at 2am after the Schooner bar closed) and had no speed problems.

Re: Coke sticker. Yes, you can spend more for the sticker than you may wind up drinking, but the sheer convenience coupled with not having to sign yet another receipt for something was a blessing, although I am pretty darned sure I passed my break even point.

I must be getting pretty tired. I understand about the computer, will ask DH which he would prefer.

I don't drink soda. i only drink water or coffee. This means that I do not need a soda card correct? I can fill up in the dining area's for nothing. Am I getting this right? I must be such a dummy, or I am extemely tired!

Yup, you can get all the water or coffee your little ol' heart desires in any of the dining venues. Cafe Promenade has the free (and some would argue better) coffee in the back, as well as ice water, so it's available virtually 24 hours a day.
