Time Change Question

Hi! We're booked on Radiance in Jan for our first cruise! I'm VERY CONFUSED about the time change on the ship. When the itinerary shows the ship docking at different ports - is that the actual time for each island or is the ship set on say Eastern Std Time and stays on that time for the cruise?

We're planning on booking some of our own excursions but the time change has me confused!

Does anyone know how the time change works - especially on the Radiance?

THANKS SO MUCH! :)

You should always stay on ship time. Even if the island you're going to are in a different time zone, the ship will leave according to the time on the ship, not according to the local island time. My advice is bring a watch with you, don't change the time anywhere you go, and go according to the time of your watch.

I have been on many ships where the ship changed time; it is up to each individual captain.

If you DO change time, you will be well notified. There will be a posting in the daily newspaper, as well as announcements and a board that has this posted as you disembark at the ports.

I suggest that you ask the independent operator about your ship; they each know the time schedule of the ships that come in week after week.

Have fun planning!

Thanks - I understand the need to always know the ship time in order to get back to the ship by the correct time.

But I'm having a hard time trying to find out if the Radiance uses the local island time in order to book an excursion - so we arrive at the excursion at the correct time!

Thanks...

The ship has clocks all over--they will all be set to the correct "ships" time. When booking your own excursions, if it is a reputable tour guide, THEY will know what time the ship will be on! Don't worry about that! But, as the above poster said--ALWAYS keep your watch on ships time--ALWAYS!!!!!!!

Thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it.

We were considering booking a Dolphin Swim in Cozumel - they are on central time and it is booked through their website with a choice of 10 or 2....

Radiance leaves from Key West so if it stays on Eastern time we will actually (according to the itinerary) get to the island at 8 - 3 central time which is 9 - 4 eastern time - Which makes a huge difference in which time we pick 10 or 2....

I'm starting to realize why people book the ship's excursions even though they are more expensive.

Either way it seems to me that you would want to book the 10 a.m. excursion. You need to be back on the ship 1/2 hour before the ship sails, so you couldn't do the 2 p.m. one, no matter what.

Hello, whatever port you leave you stay on that time, ex. leave Miami, you whole cruise will be eastern time. The only time I have ever experineced a time change on the ship is different ports. We just came back from Alaska, started in Vancouver and ended in Achorage area. Since we ended in another time zone they change it on the ship. Roud trips usually stay on the same time no matter if the change timezones. We have been on about 12 cruises so far. This has been my experience.

Good Luck.

That is not true. It depends on the Captain whether or not the ship changes to local time or stays on the time of its homeport. Of my 7 cruises, 4 stayed in the same time zone the whole time so no issue. 2 did not change when we entered new time zones (my Voyager Eastern and Western cruises), but 1 did change (my Brilliance Panama Canal cruise).

I always use my cell phone as my watch. Unfortunately, it was always picking up the time signal that would keep it in whatever the local time was. It made me crazy and I wish I had realized it would do that.

I had an issue with that one cruise as well. I brought a watch but the stem wouldn't come out so I could change the time. I live in the Central time zone and the cruise was from the East - to the Eastern Caribbean - and our ship stayed on Miami time. So I had to be extremely careful when trying to figure out what time it was, whether I used my cell phone or my watch.

I just went through this myself for booking Dolphin Discovery. Bottom line is that the times shown on RCCL intinerary are eastern times. Times in Cozumel like you stated are central. So if your intinerary shows 9-4 on RCCL in Cozumel time you will be there 8-3.
