Does the Brilliance usually dock on the right or left side?

Recommended Posts

You will find that the ships dock on both sides, depending on the particular port facilities.

Some cruising/sailing lingo: the sides of the ship are referred to as Port and Starboard, not Left and Right. As you are standing facing the front of the ship, the Port will be on your left and Starboard will be on your right. Forward is the term for the front of the ship and Aft is the term for the back of the ship.

Have fun!

which side of the ship is dockside is often not known until the day before docking because it depends on so many variables.

- how many other ships are in port and how large are those ships

-is the ship being docked to head out to sea or does it make a turn after leaving the pier.

when are other ships in port leaving before or after your ship makes a difference which ropes from what ship go over or under those from another ship

- is the ship loading a lot of provisions or luggage that day which may mean certain hatches need to be open.

and there are probably more that dont come to mind right now:)

Sometimes, the side away from the dock provides the best view! Other times, there will be another ship docked right beside you, so if you're on your balcony, you will be staring at the passengers on the other ship! It's all a crapshoot!

...and if you happen to be on the dock side when they start unloading luggage you'll know it!!!! Sigh. Fortunately that only happened once, when we docked in Barcelona....but it was 5:30 in the morning, when Captain said we were going to dock at 7. THAT was a surprise!
