cmjaffe Posted October 6, 2006 #1 Share Posted October 6, 2006 Don't think I've ever seen this card mentioned here so I thought I'd ask. Has anyone used the GO Oahu Card? There offered in different US cities for 1,3,5 and 7 days for a fee. Offer admission to various entertainment/activities in Oahu for length of card. 3+ day card also has bonus of one rental day free w/Dollar or free surf lesson or entrance to PCC. Also one day free hoppa trolley, water park admission (is this place "worth it" -- we'll be staying for several days). Just not sure for the outlay of $$ it the card would be cost-effective. ANy input would be greatly appreciated. We're 2 adults 2 kids (but son'll be 13 then so it's 3 adults for expenses). Will try to find out directly from Dollar how the car rental would work since that would be a $30ish savings for each adult and we would just take car out of city immediately... would save the parking fee. Deb in Cali Posted October 23, 2006 #3 Share Posted October 23, 2006 I purchased two 3 day cards back in June. I am leaving tomorrow for Hawaii, I will be using them over the next few days. I have made reservations for my rental car and the Makani catamaran tour without any trouble. In fact the Makani catamaran tour operator informed me that the Go cards can now be used for the lunch tour, so we are now booked for that tour instead of the breakfast tour. I will be back on November 10 and will give a report on my usage of the cards and if we had a good or a bad experience. Deb
cmjaffe Posted October 23, 2006 Author #4 Share Posted October 23, 2006 Deb, I more or less "gave up" on this post... we trying to "pull" our summer trip together before we even do our December trip (both using frequent flier points). I was just "playing around" with potential rental car ressies... realizing it's cheaper to p/u car in Hilo over Kona... and was planning on staying at Marriott Koalina... but was considering staying at Sheraton "if" corporate rate was "reasonable" (won't know probably until December... though have point stay on hold "just to be safe"). Do you have any "idea" how much the rental car rate will be (considering you'll be responsible for the "additional fees") It will be nice not to have to pay for parking and just get car for day though. Have a wonderful time on your trip (if I remember correctly, you're going to be in during the "holidays")? Thanks, Carolyn
cmjaffe Posted October 23, 2006 Author #5 Share Posted October 23, 2006 ooops just re-read your post... guess I have you mixed up w/another who posts here alot. Thanks again.. you'll be coming back on DS's b-day... Have a wonderful trip. Carolyn
cmjaffe Posted October 23, 2006 Author #6 Share Posted October 23, 2006 Deb, Is the Makani just a "sail" or does it include a swim? (it wasn't clear on the website) Also, did you purchase your card during their "sale" or from Costco (since they offer the 3 day at a substantial discount). It's tempting but I'm not sure if we stay at Marriott Ko Olina if it's worth getting since it will be 3 adults (son's 13) and one child... might be better off getting the Entertainment card/book... decisions, decisions THanks again Carolyn
beachchick Posted October 23, 2006 #7 Share Posted October 23, 2006 cmjaffe: I know I'm going to sound stupid here, but I don't quite understand your car question. If I'm reading it correctly, you want to know about car rates for 1 day in Hilo, plus you will have a car for Kona as well? I believe you are flying into KOA and out ITO, is that correct? The extra fees you are asking about are for one-way drop off? If so, try Alamo because DH and I flew into KOA and out ITO last year and did it as a one-way rental with no extra fees through Alamo. I don't know if they still do that for no drop fee, but do check. (Avis and National also did not have drop fees at that time, but again I don't know about now.) As we've already "done" your "route" in terms of in and out on the BI, let me know if there's anything I can help with for the whole car rental thing. Frankly, I was surprised that any of the companies have a drop fee because visitors do KOA/ITO and ITO/KOA frequently, so it's not like all the cars are going to end up on one side of the island. beachchick p.s. Are you getting excited for December???
cmjaffe Posted October 24, 2006 Author #8 Share Posted October 24, 2006 Beachchick... I know my posts must be "kind of confusing" since here I'm asking about the "go Oahu" card which offers a free one day car rental for each 3+day card purchased. This is for our summer trip which I'm trying to figure out A) how long to be away from home, would love the longer the better but also being a "realist" as far as logistics w/DH work and stuff around house and B) how long on each island, and more importantly which island(s) to go to other than BI. For December (and YES... getting quite excited) we're just going to BI and Kauai and, yes, we have the car rentals all set. Carolyn
cmjaffe Posted October 24, 2006 Author #9 Share Posted October 24, 2006 OH, was pricing out BI weekly rental is kind of pricy. Also found that renting in Hilo cheaper (by about $50+) than KOA for same type of car. Carolyn
beachchick Posted October 25, 2006 #10 Share Posted October 25, 2006 cmjaffe: Okay. Now I get it. Interesting about ITO being cheaper than KOA. I wonder if that's typical or dependent on time of year? I betcha that they raise the rates during the 2 weeks surrounding Ironman every year, but other than that, I've no idea. Glad you're all set for December. beachchick
spleen93 Posted October 25, 2006 #11 Share Posted October 25, 2006 Kona is the more popular tourist spot than Hilo so not surprised that rental car rates are more expensive in Kona than Hilo. Spleen
cmjaffe Posted October 25, 2006 Author #12 Share Posted October 25, 2006 The crazy thing is I'm finding the price difference only with Alamo and not w/National... also it was "the same price" when I was booking the cars in the summer for December at both locations. The other "crazy" thing is that I'm not finding a weekend rate for either location... usually there's a lower rate for weekend vs. regular daily rate... just an observation. hansolo Posted January 18, 2007 #13 Share Posted January 18, 2007 Hi there, I've been checking out the go card oahu. On the website it says that the sale price to buy the card ends on Jan 18, 2007. But I think that they always have a sale price I don't know how often though because I bought the Go Card San Francisco last summer for when it went on sale. I guess you just have to keep checking the website. For me when I bought the 3 day pass Go Card SF. It was well worth it and we saved some money and you don't have to worry about carrying extra cash or using your credit card all the time. I'm thinking of buying the go card to use for this summer when we stay in Oahu for 3 nights. Anyone else who have used the go card found it useful?
