triciafromnj Posted October 12, 2006 #1 Share Posted October 12, 2006 Has Labadee changed over the years? We were there in 2001 and didn't care for it at all. I see so many people here love it and I was wondering if it changed...got better...more things to do, etc.
ChristieNJ Posted October 12, 2006 #2 Share Posted October 12, 2006 I don't know what it was like years ago, but I was just there two weeks ago, and it is like PARADISE there!!!! It is absolutely beautiful and immaculate and the water was gorgeous. So if there were any negatives before, I bet things have changed for sure! :)

We were also there in 2001 and the water was very murky. Couldn't see a thing. Didn't like that place much either back then. Bill

Didn't like that place much either back then. Bill That is what we found also. We also found that the mercahnts in the market type area were so pushy, almost to the point of benig downright rude. We walked around, took some pictures and headed back to the ship.
ChristieNJ Posted October 12, 2006 #5 Share Posted October 12, 2006 Water was CRYSTAL CLEAR and turquoise!!!! I'm telling you, it was the most beautiful island I have ever seen. I'm not a shopper, so I didn't go in the shopping areas. Give me a couple minutes & I'll post some pics of Labadee a couple weeks ago on this thread.... S.S.Oceanlover Posted October 12, 2006 #9 Share Posted October 12, 2006 picture #2 looks like paradise. Water looks much different then when I was there. Maybe it had been stirred up from a storm or something. Just emailed my TA to book the Mariner. First cruise without kids in about....forever!:D Bill
gambler Posted October 12, 2006 #10 Share Posted October 12, 2006 Are there a lot of jelly fish right now?
ChristieNJ Posted October 12, 2006 #11 Share Posted October 12, 2006 I did not see even ONE Jellyfish while we were there! Bill, enjoy your first cruise w/o the kids! Next October, this will be the first cruise that I *AM* finally bringing my daughter! LOL (age 7) Usually we go with friends and do the "friends vacation" thing, but this time it's a family vacation so it'll be perfect to bring my daughter on. :)

It'll sure be different without my son with us but somehow we'll muddle through! You have a great family cruise! RCI has a lot of great things to do for families. cb at sea Posted October 12, 2006 #13 Share Posted October 12, 2006 I guess it depends on what you're looking for! For a perfect "beach day", Labadee is great! I must admit--the water was clear when we were there. I didn't even venture into the "marketplace", since I'm not really into junky souveniers!!! The only time we were approached by "natives" were as we headed back to the tender--a musician tried to sell us his flute/recorder-thing. I'd love to be there right now! FitzLA Posted October 12, 2006 #14 Share Posted October 12, 2006 We were the just last week. Yes, there were a lot of Jelly Fish but I did not see one person get stung. I was on a floating mat and saw one float right underneath me. And, while still on the ship in the morning, I saw a school of hundreds of them float right by the ship towards the shore. Other than that, that was our favorite island along with Grand Cayman. We had a wonderful beach day there and it was total paradise. They are also in the process of building the Dragons Breath Pub which looks to be a large 2 story mostly outdoor pub. It looks like it is almost finished. JBoshears Posted October 12, 2006 #15 Share Posted October 12, 2006 We LOVE Labadee!! It is one of the highlights of our cruise. However, the last time we went there we walked straight across the the far side of the island, and the swimming area was very bumpy. It wasn't rocky, but it was not smooth, and the water was very merky. I couldn't even see when the "bumps" were there, and we would stumble over them. I just learned to stay on the same side as the ship is on, as it has smooth swimming area. The shopping area was very stressful. We probably won't attempt that again. Very pushy vendors, and the problem is I have trouble telling people "no." The first year we went there, we rented the jet skis. That was a total blast, and we are planning on doing it on our next trip. Labadee is a great "sun" day. Go have a great time and just relax in your lounge chair. You will LOVE it too! MszKitty Posted October 13, 2006 #16 Share Posted October 13, 2006 My first visit to Labadee was in 2002 and I was not impressed. So when we were there this past June, I didn't rush off the ship. I took my time and thought I'd get off the ship for an hour or so. As it turned out, they have really improved Labadee. It ended up being a very nice beach day...one that I wished I had spent more time on. I didn't go to the market place because I remember what it was like the last time and as cb at sea said, I'm not into the junky souveniers either. Make sure you check out the whole beach area. Don't just stay right near where the tender docks. Venture over to your left and back a bit to an area called Dragon's Breath or Barefoot Beach, or Hideaway Beach. (You should get a map of Labadee with your Cruise Compass. If you don't get one, make sure you ask for it as you leave the ship.) I don't know how to post pictures. If I did, I could share my pictures. If you want to send me your email address I will send them to you in an email. My email address is my cruise critic screen name at aol dot com. hazeleyes35 Posted October 20, 2006 #17 Share Posted October 20, 2006 We were in Labadee in September and it was beautiful. We took an excursion to Malfini Beach and it was great. There were only about 20 of us there and it was a quiet and secluded beach. I highly recommend spending the $60/person to have a wonderful afternoon.
