Cutting Buffet Lines (Not Really...)

Leo Jay

Recommended Posts

Now, everyone: BEHAVE yourselves on this thread. Seriously! You've been warned... :D

I've noticed that buffet lines sometimes get bogged down because people may not be paying attention (or are paranoid about being called line cutters) and end up waiting unnecessarily behind passengers who are waiting for their made-to-order omelets, or waiting for the meat to be replaced in the carving station, or whatever else happens to be in the first position of the food lineup.

As I see it, if you're not in line for that particular thing -- there's no reason to wait! Just go around! You're not "cutting the line"! :)

Once I noticed that phenomenon, I tried to be aware and tell people "it's okay -- I'm just waiting for my eggs -- go around me", but it does seem to happen quite a bit that people wait unnecessarily when they just want bacon, or hash browns, or what have you.

Seems there really should be separate lines for made-to-order vs. the rest of the stuff...

Thoughts?

If I am behind someone waiting for eggs or something, just to be polite I will ask them "do you mind if I go ahead?". I have never had anyone say no.

That would be hilarious if some uptight person responded "yes, I do mind -- I was in line before you, so you'll just have to wait until my yolks are firm enough. You... would-be line cutter"

Every morning I would get an omelet. My DH did not, but he would wait in line with me anyway fearing people would think he was cutting in line.

However, after a couple days, he finally decided to go around us omelet people and jumped in. No one hassled him.

I say go around! Just be very aware and observant so as not to mistakenly cut. :p

OK, I'll bite.

Suppose we're in the buffet line at breakfast. Wanted a particular flavor of yogurt. None there. So, we go through the line, find a table, then as I go up to get some coffee I notice they have the flavor of yogurt I wanted. I see no problem going to that part of the line and saying to whoever is standing there, "Gosh, I'm sorry. Can I just reach in and grab a yogurt?" Never had anyone say "no". Then I'll say something like, "Thanks! Have a great day!" Whole process takes about three seconds.

Is this the kind of thing you're talking about?

LOL...I imagine I would probably be so shocked I wouldn't know what to do if that happened, but I could always have fun and make faces or rude noises, or even worse...I'll start singing. believe me - you don't want me to start singing!.

:D

 Walking up to whatever area of the buffet serving line has whatever single item it is that you want. Excuse me but may I just get some ???? That to me is o.k.

Now, bringing your 9 family/group members and getting in front of the people who has slowed to get say a roll and staying on the buffet line for the remaining of items to overfill your plate, . . . then yes, that is cutting the line.

I just got off the Destiny never used the buffet but I heard some stories. Woo Boy!!!! I wasn't there, don't know but wanting a few more pieces of bacon is o.k. (imho). Wanting to get in front of 50 people who slowed to grab some milk or a banana is way not cool:mad:

O.K. I have abandoned the last firestorm I started over in another thread. You may start the flaming here. :o

P.S. Jay did you ever go back to that other thread? Ha! Ha! Ha! They jumped on you and then they got me. So angry, so very very angry. Ha! Ha! Ha!

I take it on a case by case basis. If I think someone is being rude I usually just tell them "hey a$$hole, get in line like the rest of us". This typically corrects the behavior and embaresses them to all ends.

Those that are pleasant and ask, go around a stalled line, or make a quick in/out for that single item are OK by me.

The people I just love are the ones that stand in line just like everyone else, then just as that person gets to the serving area, his/her party of 15 all of a sudden show up and make thier way down the buffet line right in front of him/her.

I cannot imagine that!!! Since I personally hate waiting in lines, I almost never visit the buffet unless it is empty (very early a.m or late lunch/dinner). If I have to wait, I much rather wait sitting in a dining room and the food is put before me. Just me -- another pet thing with me.;)

I have not had the pleasure of having 1 person hold the line for 15 but knowing me, my mouth is so big, I would say something. Did that happen to you on, . . . . say . . . . the Destiny!!

Ha! Ha! Ha! Man of man oh man!!!!

I would hope, since we are all adults here, this is a common sense issue.

Sure, but if you're the 10th person in line, you don't necessarily know that the entire line is being held up because person #2 thinks they have to wait until person #1's omelette is done. Easily half the people in line might not even want made to order.

You nailed it on the head on that comment. Thats when I like having my 6'3" 250# son standing with me and he politely tells them to go to the back of the line and they do it.

Just grab theirs and run....it's easier, quicker, no need for words, and gives them something to talk about for the rest of their cruise!!! Besides......those pool side deck chairs don't save themselves!

Okay.. just joking here....all of you back into your buffet line....

Heh. I've never seen anything quite like that. But even at 6'2 and 160 soaking wet, I find I can put people in their place with an "uh, excuse me...?" delivered in the right "don't even try it" tone of voice. People sometimes think they can get away with stuff when they don't realize there's a New Yorker around to call them on it. :D

Having said all that, if there's a line of people who are waiting for the serving station or the whatever-to-order, I absolutely will duck in to the open space to serve myself -- it's not as though I'm holding anyone else up. :o

Ya know, one of these days I just might do that. Like you said, it will give everyone something to talk about. I think I would probably do it near the end of the cruise though. Isn't it weird how out of 3000 passengers you keep running into the same people in different places on the ship:eek:

You do that and I'll be in line behind the uptight person while I make armpit noises and sing annoying commercials.....then check back on the boards the following week to see how many complain about us.

So, i had already been through the long buffet line that wrapped around the corner to the deli, i found myself a table and realized  I forgot the butter for my roll, i walked back up and asked the man in line infront of the butters if i could possibly please sneak in and grab a few butters, he very rudely and loundly said "NO THERE IS NO CUTTING IN LINE AND I WAS HERE FIRST, YOU WILL HAVE TO GET AT THE BACK OF THE LINE WITH EVERYONE ELSE"

So how do you handle a sutuation like that? was i really trying to cut in line for a 1 second grap of butter? and i did ask first so it's not like i just cut in front of him and it's not like a wanted seconds or was cutting in with a group of friends.

See, common senselessness. You have to just roll your eyes and ignore that kind of stuff.

NYC. Ha! ha! Ha! Unbelievable. He was rude and inflexible. I think I know him He is currently on another thread flaming me. Ha! Ha! Ha! That is too funny.

Next time just say, excuse me and when he pauses momentarily to unleash a barrage of rudeness, just grab your butter and run. ha! Ha! Ha!

I don't know has anyone ever heard of ANY food running out on a carnival cruise ship? What is the panic??? One word -- DINING ROOM

Again, did this perhaps happen on the . . . . Destiny?

*migrating over from Leo's other thread - hey, I saw the word buffet and couldn't resist*

I witnessed/was a part of this dilemma on the Pride. The omelet station created much confusion as the line was usually long and those in the back did not know what they were standing in line for. It was a single line for a long time until we realized we could split the line in two. But, now there were people who were in the omelet line and also wanted the other stuff, like myself, and didn't know what line to get into. Should we just "cut" the people in the second line, or wait until they were done? The latter wasn't that attractive of an option as that line was growing longer. End of story - I just blended in with the second line after getting the omelet, apologized, quickly got my food, and left.
