Fur in January??

Hello Ladies out there....

I plan to wear black full length gowns for the formal nights, sleeveless. I am having a hard time deciding on a wrap. I have read that it gets cold in the dining rooms and we smoke, so I think we will make a few trips in the evening out on deck. Would it be out of place to wear a faux fur wrap, like a capelet or wrap? I have one that basically just covered the shoulders and upper back. This is for a Carribbean cruise in late January. I haven't seen many comments on this board about fur....

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Maria

It sounds pretty but I will agree...your fur will be panting in the Caribbean heat!!!

However, if you are leaving from a cold weather port (NY, NJ) and your first formal night is from there, (the next day) the fur would be fine and probably most welcome for the chilly air.

If the second formal night is in the tropics, you won't need it...

We're leaving next week for a Caribbean cruise out of NJ and I do plan on a "heavier" weight formal for the first night out, even though it's only October..it will be cooler. On the second formal night in the Caribbean, I will dress on the lighter side.

Hope this helps!!!

Pam

While I am often among those who say you can wear velvet in the winter in the Caribbean on a ship because it will be cool enough inside, I do have to say that one of the few clothing choices that look out of place in the Caribbean is fur.

What others said above, though, about wearing fur if you are leaving from a Northern port and formal night is still quite far north, then by all means wear the fur capelet because the top deck will be very chilly.

It just depends-places like Cozumel and Grand Cayman are never supposed to get below 85 eenin the winter- but twice I have been on winter cruises, one in December and one this past February and the high was maybe 65 and MUCH cooler in the evening- and I ws like WHERE is the warm caribbean weather AT????? So bring it and see-you can always leave it in your room and just have a light pashmina wrap with you also.

I'm the one who always defends velvet in the Caribbean :D because people who live here do wear it, as well as leather pants, sweaters, tweedy suits, etc., but even I draw the line at fur. :) Another type of wrap would be much more suitable. Enjoy your cruise!

Well I was not thinking of a fur coat or fur stole-but those "prom" fake fur capelets that were really big a couple of years back-they would not be that thick-very lightweight-the ones I bought Meg were anyway-but she also felt they were not warm enough if the weather was cool-as those capelets just barely covered her shoulders and her arms were still bare. she still felt she needed an outside jacket over them-that they were more for looks then actual warmth.

Actually a real pashmina/shawl would be best-silk and cashmere-holds warmth but if the temps are warmer-it will also breathe-so perfect for just slight coolish temps-say like 55 or 60 degrees in the evening. I have bought them in Marshalls for around $35-$40 instead of the usual $100 or more.

Aren't you the gal that lives in Puerto Rico?

Yep, right here in San Juan (not Old SJ, alas).

And I agree, a light pashmina or even pashmina-look rayon, would be perfect for Caribbean weather, and very versatile.
