Rafaella Posted October 15, 2006 #1 Share Posted October 15, 2006 Ok, the BIG question is how to avoid the motion sickness ...???? On my last cruise, I took some Meclizine and I was sleeping the whole time like a bear... I really don't want to sleep so much ( hate to miss the fun), but I need to have something for nausea and motion sickness. Help me out, please. I saw some folks with behind ear patches, do they really help? if yes, are they Rxs or OTC? What are some side effects of the patch? Thanks everyone!!!! jetskier Posted October 15, 2006 #2 Share Posted October 15, 2006 The patch can have several side effects to include blurred vision and dry mouth. I take Bonine at night because you are going to sleep anyway. In the morning I take ginger root pills which helps settles the stomach. PhoneGoddess Posted October 15, 2006 #3 Share Posted October 15, 2006 My doctor recommended Bonine for my first cruise. I am VERY prone to motion sickness. The Bonine worked like a charm and I didn't have any side effects...no upset stomach, no drowsiness AND you can consume alcohol while taking it. I swear by this stuff now and never cruise without it!:)
lougee1043 Posted October 15, 2006 #4 Share Posted October 15, 2006 height and weight have a lot to do with it --- on one of our cruises our friend who is 4 foot nothing and weighs as next to nothing and buys her clothes in the pre teen section was also feeling drowsy -so she started taking a childs dose 1/2 pill and was ok after that
madhouseinc Posted October 15, 2006 #5 Share Posted October 15, 2006 I like the bands around your wrist - can buy them anywhere and no side effects.
Born Cruiser 2 Posted October 16, 2006 #6 Share Posted October 16, 2006 I've been cruising since 1988 and have used the patch as long as it has been available. The secret to the patch: CUT IT IN HALF!!!!! It is a "one size fit's all" prescription which results in over medication for the smaller female population. The first time I tried it, I felt the side effects. After another woman passenger (very cruise wise) told me to cut the patch in half, I've never had a problem with dry mouth, blurred vision, etc. Bonus: your prescription lasts twice as long. Bon Voyage to all!

Hi Rafaella, I guess 'all of us' are trying to give you advice based on 'our' own experience and it might be of some use to you......but I have seen that in many cases what works for one might not work for someone else: we have use Meclizine (sold under many different names and in different 'size') in the past and depending on the amount of Meclizine in a pill (it can be 12.5mg, 25mg and even 50mg) it was making us sleepy as well ....so please look at the amount of Meclizine in the 'pill' and not just the "pill"......and the ratio of body weight to the amount of 'medicine' might be important as well......someone 200 lbs can tolerate more of the same chemical as someone half that size. The "patch" - made with scopolamine worked for us as far as preventing the nausea but caused some other undesirable effects: very blured vision, very sensitive to light, lose of balance, dry mouth, not able to read the menu - .....that was with us but it might be different for you, and yes it is Rx in the USA and OC in some other countries.....please check with your doctor before you use it and please look what the link with manufacturer's description of side effects: http://www.transdermscop.com/information.htm#sideeffects including the statement "not to cut the patch" ......if the patch is cut - too much scopolamine can get in the system too fast.....the patch is made to evenly release the medication over 72 hours .....and I do agree with one of the posters above that some of us might not need or tolerate the same amount of scopolamine.....but cutting might do even more harm.....small piece of plastic film under portion of the patch will be a better way to cut down the amount that can be trasferred to our skin. Some people use and like the Sea Bands and some are happy with their electronic ReliefBands......we got them too and neither is working for us. Ginger might help you and there are some other medication as well. Wes

2ndsailing Posted October 17, 2006 #9 Share Posted October 17, 2006 Is "Bonine" available in Canada? Yes. I bought it at Shopper's Drug Mart. I also bought som e Ginger Root but didn't even take that. I took the Bonine in the morning everyday starting the day before our cruise and I never had a problem. We took a mini cruise in Australia a few years ago and it was very rough (storm was passing through). I never made it to the dinningroom once, and was ill the entire trip. Couldn't wait to get off the ship. I have tried different things but the Bonamine works the best. It comes in a blue box.
