Crown Bay to Trunk Bay (St. Johns)

Hi--

I have seen several posts regarding Princess docking at Crown Bay and passengers making their way over to St. Johns, but I want to clarify something. Is the best way to get there to:

(a) take a cab from Crown Bay to Red Hook, catch a ferry to Cruz Bay, take a cab to Trunk Bay; or

(b) take a cab to Charlotte Amalie, catch a ferry to Cruz Bay, take a cab to Trunk Bay: or

© just take the cruise ships's excursion? (The cruise ship's excursion only allows for 90 miutes at Trunk Bay---I was hoping for more beach time, so my preference is to go independently.)

I basically want to spend as little time in transit as possible---and a couple of other questions---how much will I spend making this trip, and the ship sails at 6PM, so what time do I need to leave Trunk Bay--I understand the ferry only runs once per hour (on the hour) from Cruz Bay to Red Hook.

I have never been to Trunk Bay---I hope it is as spectacular as I have read/heard---seems like a real pain to get over there and back
